S UMMER O REGON A DVENTURE

The trip to Oregon over the summer is intended to provide students with the singular experience of the state’s stunning nature and rich culture. The two-week journey from the northern city of Portland to the southern town of Ashland, and later to the eastern Redwoods of the Pacific Coast will be full of novel and enriching adventures which will allow Taiwanese students a unique and fulfilling experience. It will provide the students the opportunity to explore one of the most

geographically diverse states in the U.S. through activities like camping, hiking, rafting and mountain biking while learning about the region’s geology and history. In addition, they will be exploring the culture of Oregonians through nature, craft markets, music, theater and food. Most Taiwanese visit or sojourn well-known places like, L.A., San Francisco, Seattle, and New York, but very few have the chance to visit the serenity and beauty of the ninth largest state.

For this summer, as it is my first time hosting this excursion, I will only accept five high school students. The students are expected to be mature and considerate of each other as well as the culture and environment they are visiting.

I spent the first 21 years of my life in Southern Oregon, but at the age of 21, moved to Seattle. After living, working and

traveling to other parts of the country and world, I returned to Southern Oregon at the age of 28 to raise my first daughter while finishing my degree. At 36, I moved to Taipei with my eldest daughter to further my career in education.

During my first few years in Taiwan, I taught at various schools such as Fuhsing and Wego; until, my second daughter was born thus prompting me to start my own business as a professional tutor/teacher. The purpose of starting a summer tour for high school students is to help urban Taiwanese teenagers step outside their overly materialistic environment and connect with the healing and beautiful vistas of the Pacific North West. While the trip will mainly focus on outdoor activities, there will also be opportunities for students to learn about history, the arts and science.

ITINERARY

This itinerary is planned around certain activities and events which may be subject to light alterations.

June 7, Day 1

Our plane lands at 4:10 p.m. in San Francisco, so by the time we get through customs and load our baggage into our rental, it will already be around 5:00 p.m. From SFO, we’ll head to the Fisherman’s Wharf

where they can choose to tour the Madame Tussauds Wax Museum, Ripples Believe it or Not, and/or 7D Experience. Before we leave, we’ll grab dinner at the famous Boudin at the Wharf. After dinner, we’ll drive north to Vacaville to stay the night.

June 8, Day 2

On our second day, we’ll awake and complete the drive to Ashland, Oregon. On the way, we’ll make a stop at Mt. Shasta and Castle Lake for a little dip. We should arrive in Ashland sometime in the early evening to check into our hotel.

June 9, Day 3

Hopefully by the third day, everyone will be better adjusted to the time zone. After a sustaining breakfast, we’ll load up in a van with mountain bikes for our ride along exciting trails with amazing views.

An experienced guide will lead us on paths which are beginner to intermediate, so it should pose no technical difficulties for the inexperienced rider. A good portion of the morning will be spent

riding the trail. Snacks and drinks will be prepared to ensure everyone will remain hydrated and energized. After a half day riding the trails, we’ll head back to the hotel to clean-up. Later in the early evening, we’ll head out to the outdoor Shakespearean Green show performance. Afterwards, participants will choose among the many restaurants for dinner. After dinner, we’ll head to Fun Again Games where they can choose a board game of their liking to play, as I will arrange for someone to teach them.

Afterwards, we’ll call it a night and get plenty of rest for tomorrow’s Crater Lake hike.

(3)

June 10, Day 4

We’ll leave the hotel by 8:00 a.m. On the way out of town, we’ll stop by the Breadboard (a local favorite for breakfast) for a hearty breakfast. The drive to Crater lake will take us roughly 1.5 hours. At Crater Lake, we’ll trek the rim for most of the day. Snacks, drinks and lunch will be prepared to ensure hydration and energy. By the end of the day, everyone should be pleasantly exhausted, so we will drive back to the hotel. Next to the hotel is Great American Pizza for dinner.

If they still have energy, they’ll have the option of heading down to the local theater to watch a film.

June 11, Day 5

Day five will be the most exciting day yet with white water river rafting. We’ll awake early to drive northwest for about 1.5 hours to Selma, Oregon where we will meet our experienced guide, gear up and head down Hell’s Canyon for a seven-hour trip.

This particular trip is for beginners to intermediate, which means it will be the right amount of fun and excitement without compromising safety. Mid-way, we’ll break to eat lunch at the river’s bank. Afterwards, we’ll continue down the river completing the trip in the early evening. By the time we

get back to our hotel, all our remaining energy will be for eating and sleeping.

(4)

June 12, Day 6

On day six, we’ll take a break from all the traveling and fun. During the day, we’ll hang out at Lithia Park, learn and play Ultimate Frisbee, picnic and leisurely enjoy our free time. The daytime will remain open for relaxing and taking in the beauty of

Ashland. Later in the evening, we’ll have dinner before attending the play, Macbeth at the

Shakespearean theater. After the play is over, we will head back to the hotel and get plenty of rest before awaking early for the Oregon Caves exploration.

June 13, Day 7

On day 7, we will leave Ashland and head northwest for about 1.5 hours to the Oregon Coast. Our first stop will be Cave Junction where we will explore the Oregon Caves and learn about its geology. After the caves, we will head to Harrison State Park and check into our campsite. Once there, we will settle into our Yurt, explore the area and collect wood for a campfire. A cooler with campfire meats and vegetables to roast and grill will be prepared along with drinks and snacks.

(5)

June 14, Day 8

On day 8, we will awake early, build a fire and have an outdoor, fireside breakfast. After breakfast, we’ll pack up and head south to the Redwood Forest where we will go on a day hike. After the hike, we’ll head back to the camp ground and play some volleyball or Frisbee on the beach. In the evening, we’ll hang out by the fire while roasting and grilling our dinner.

June 14, Day 9

On day 9, we will leave Harrison State Park after breakfast and head up to the coastal town of Coos Bay where we will be staying in a house for the following two nights. After unpacking, we’ll head to the dunes where we will receive an introductory lesson on ATV safety. Before anyone is able to take their ATV on the dunes, they will need to prove their capability to the instructor. Once all riders are cleared, we will ride the dunes together in a group and stay as a group. After two hours of riding, we’ll go into town to grab some fresh fish and chips for lunch. Later in the day, we’ll rent kayaks and paddle on the fresh water lake. The lake is calm and everyone will be required to wear life jackets. Finally, we’ll end the day at our house barbequing outside in the fresh coastal air.

(6)

June 15, Day 10

On day 10, we’ll awake at our leisure to have breakfast then drive to Wild Life Safari in Winston, Oregon where we’ll spend part of the day driving through the expansive wildlife park. Afterwards, we’ll drive back to our rental house near the beach and play

some sports.

June 16, 17: Day 11& 12

On day 11, we’ll leave Coos Bay around 8 – 9 a.m. and head north to Portland, Oregon where we will spend our last two full days. Because Portland is the origin of Nike, we will be visiting the recently opened Nike museum in downtown. In addition, we will visit Powell’s Books, the world’s largest inside book store, stroll the waterfront park, chill a bit in Pioneer Square, feast ourselves at one of Portland’s unique food truck pods, and drop in to Voodoo Doughnuts. Later in the day, we’ll catch the Portland Aerial Tram for some incredible sight-seeing.

(7)

June 18, Day 12

Day 12 will be our last day. Part of the day will be spent at the OMSI and the rest of the day will be for leisure activities.

June 19, Day 13

Check out of hotel and head to airport.
