180-Hour Preparation Course

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This education program is designed to provide the coursework necessary for those seeking the certification as an Addiction Counselor through either Georgia Addiction

Counselors Association or Alcohol and Drug Abuse Certification Board of Georgia.

Addiction  Counseling  Practice  Domains

   

GOAL:  Define,  review,  and  practice  Addiction  Counselor  Competencies  for  effective  substance  abuse   treatment,  comprised  of  the  8  practice  domains  for  substance  abuse  clinical  services.    

   

COURSE  TITLE   Hours  

Relapse  Prevention;  Recovery  Promotion    -­‐  January  17  &  18,  2014   Training  Objectives:  

1.  Understand  terms  and  phases  related  to  preventing  relapse  and  promoting  recovery   2.  Review  and  understand  the  Developmental  Model  of  Recovery  (DMR)  

3.  Using  a  case  study,  discuss  strategies  that  can  help  clients  cope  with  stuck  points   using  RADAR  or  ESCAPE

P.A.W.S.:  Addressing  Post  Acute  Withdrawal    Syndrome-­‐  February  7,  2014   Training  Objectives:  

1.  Understand  the  phases  of  Post  Acute  Withdrawal  Syndrome  (P.A.W.S.)   2.  Learn  about  the  effect  of  PAWS  as  related  to  persons  in  early  recovery   3.  Practice  strategies  to  help  clients  when  they  experience  P.A.W.

Successful  Practices  for  Effective  Service  Coordination  –  March  8,  2014   Training  Objectives:    

1.  To  understand  the  Core  Competencies  of  Service  Coordination  

2.  Understand  the  involvement  of  the  Service  Coordinator  with  the  multidisciplinary   treatment  team  

3.  Explore  values  and  biases  that  may  enhance  or  inhibit  the  provision  of  effective   Service  Coordination  services.  

4.  Practice  /  Develop  a  Service  Plan  to  include  problem,  goals,  objectives,  and   interventions

1.  Define  and  understand  accepted  professional  code  of  ethics  of  addiction  counselors   to  maintain  professional  standards  and  safeguard  clients  

2.  Learn  about  transference  and  counter-­‐transference,  and  appropriate  strategies  to   address  it

Addressing  Anger  and  Resistance  with  the  Mandated  Client  –  June  6,  2014   Training  Objectives:  

1.  Understand  criminal  thinking  of  clients  in  CJ  system  

2.  Learn  of  effective  strategies  to  engage  and  motivate  mandated  client

High  Risk  Behaviors:  HIV/AIDS;  Hepatitis,  STDs.  HIV  and  ICE  –  June  7,  2014     Training  Objectives:  

1.  Discuss  the  evolution  of  HIV    and  AIDS  

2.  Understand  the  impact  of  AOD  use  on  individuals  who  are  HIV  positive  or  have  AIDS   3.  Discuss  treatment  concerns  for  the  person  with  HIV/AIDS  or  at  high  risk  for  the   disease
