Resume Writing
WHAT IS A RESUME?
A resume is a summary of your education, experience, achievements and interests
relevant to the position you are pursuing.
Your resume is, in many instances, the first opportunity a prospective employer has to
discover who you are and how you may be a valuable contributor to the organization. In
some cases, it is the only chance you have. Therefore, it is essential that your resume a
strong impression during the competitive search for the most suitable candidate. You must
customize it to the readers' interest to keep them captivated.
All job seekers must have a good resume.
It opens doors.
It also:
Organizes your own thinking about your career by linking what you have done to what you
want to do
Helps you express yourself more consistently and effectively during meetings and
interviews.
Serves as a useful guide for interviewers, helping them view your background in the ways
you want to be seen.
Proves to be a tangible document to leave behind after a meeting or to attach to any
follow-up letters.
Resume Quick Tips
Make your name stand out with Bold Text, Underl i ning , or ALL CAPITAL LEITERS, and be sure tomake the font size 12+
Keep your resume clear (adequate white space) and easy-to-read with one or two different fontstyles and sizes
Explain why you should be hired for the position?
Use action verbs in the description of your jobs and activities
Reference List should be handed in during the interview
Always list your phone numbers and addresses ... ALWAYS
Customize your resume style to the company and position you wantTypes of Resumes
There are three primary types of resumes; the chronological resume, the functional resume,
and the combination resume. Each of these types also has variations.
Which type of resume you create depends on how much experience you have in the industry
and in occupation you want to work in.
Chronological resumes:
A chronological resume typically lists each job you have held in
order, beginning with the most recent (please refer to page 5).
Functional resumes
: The functional resume lets you highlight these strengths and downplay
your lack of industry experience (please refer to page 6 and 7).
If covering your years of experience in a chronological resume would require more than two
pages, or if the description of your responsibility in several jobs would be repeating the same
information, a functional resume gives you more latitude in how to organize information.
Combination
resumes
: Combines the best qualities of the chronological and functional
resume (Please refer to page 8). Your work history is presented in chronological order, but it
may come after a review of your functional skills and your achievements.

:
APPLYING FOR JOBS ONLINE
Many employers now use online job boards
,
e-mail and resume
scanners to find the best candidates.
To apply for online jobs, you may need to create and use an
electronic resume
.
CREATING AN ELECTRONIC RESUME
An electronic resume is also called an e-resume or digital resumes
In creating your electronic resume, you are taking information on your resume and adapting it to the various types of formats used online
Your e-resume should be in Plain Text version (also called Text-Only) which allows you to
insert your resume into an e-mail, or to cut and paste it into an online application system
An e-resume uses simple formatting, omitting such features as bullets, underlining, and italics
THE "KEY" TO USING THE RIGHT WORDS
You may be perfect for the job but without the right words, your resume may end up in cyberspace forever!
Many companies who receive large numbers of electronic resumes use software that look for relevant keywords
There is no set list of keywords. The keywords vary among employers from job to job.
The keywords selected by the employer are related to the skills and qualifications required for the job
The search engine scans all resumes for the keyword and selects those resumes that meet the requirements
If you lack some of the keywords, you resume may not be considered at all
Steps to Using Keywords in Your Resume
1. Look at the job ad and determine the main experience, skills and qualifications required. These are often the "hot" keywords employers look for.
2. Include "hot" keywords right at the top of your cover letter or at the beginning of your resume - use the job title and focus on your job-related skills.
