OFFICER HASKINS

Dear Seniors,

The days are getting longer, the temperatures are getting warmer, and spring is just around corner! With the arrival of spring, more people are getting out of their houses. So be careful in your daily travels. Also, be more vigilant about all the scams that are out there. The scammers are keeping up with the headlines and adapting their tactics to the latest stories and trends. One of the latest scams involves the Corona Virus. I found the following

information on the AARP website that I wanted to share with you.

The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by a parallel outbreak of coronavirus scams, many targeting older Americans.

As of March 16, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) had logged more than 388,000 consumer complaints related to COVID-19 and stimulus pay- ments, 69 percent of them involving fraud or identity theft. These scams have cost consumers $372.6 million, with a median loss of $326.

Fraudsters are using the full suite of scam tools — phishing emails and texts, bogus social media posts, robocalls, impostor schemes and more — and closely following the headlines, adapting their messages and tactics as new medical and economic issues arise.

For example, with the COVID-19 vaccination in full swing, federal and state agencies are warning of a flood of vaccine scams, with phony websites and email campaigns promising easy and early access to coronavirus shots.

Tips to avoid coronavirus scams

• Avoid online offers for coronavirus cures or faster access to vaccines.

They aren't legitimate.

Be wary of emails, calls and social media posts advertising "free" or gov- ernment-ordered COVID-19 tests. Check the FDA website for a list of ap- proved tests and testing companies.

• Don't click on links or download files from unexpected emails, even if the email address looks like a company or person you recognize. Ditto for text messages and unfamiliar websites.

• Don't share personal information such as Social Security, Medicare and credit card numbers in response to an unsolicited call, text or email.

Be skeptical of fundraising calls or emails for COVID-19 victims or virus research, especially if they pressure you to act fast and request payment by prepaid debit cards or gift cards.

Ignore phone calls or emails from strangers urging you to invest in a hot new stock from a company working on coronavirus-related products or Services

Stay Safe and Be Aware, Officer Bruce Haskins

Yoga with Patsy is Back!!!!

Beginning Tuesday, May 4 9:30am Greetings dear Students,

Oh my, it has been such a very long haul and I know that’s an understatement. I have missed you and our yoga classes together very much! I have missed your smiling faces gathered together in anticipation of our class to begin. Then at the close of class, I have missed your peaceful expressions as you head out for your day. I am hopeful that your yoga experience has helped support your path through this extremely challenging time.

It is my sincere pleasure to tell you that yoga classes will begin again on May 4th at 9:30 AM and I truly cannot wait to see you! I will be fully vaccinated by the end of this month and so will feel comfortable to come into the center and teach. One very well known benefit of a yoga practice is that it heals the body and the mind. So, this will be my intention as I prepare classes for you. Our practice, especially as we start again, will be more of a moving meditation to quiet the chitta, the busy mind, and balance the body.

My email is patsybrightman@gmail.com. It would be a pleasure to hear from you and any suggestions will be welcome. Let's look forward to May 4th with bells on as we mindfully return to our yoga class at the center. Namaste, Patsy

APRIL is NATIONAL STRESS AWARENESS MONTH

With April National Stress Awareness Month, it’s time to take stock of what’s making your heart race, your palms sweat and your stomach ache. And if you can’t get rid of these stressors altogether, you can at least institute some better habits to more effectively deal with them. Here are several good ways to start:

Stay connected

Being able to open up and share your anxieties with family and friends can obviously help defuse them but having relationships has even greater benefits when it comes to dealing with stress. Social connections can also prevent the flood of stress hormones in your body, which can keep many diseases at bay, thereby adding years to your life.

Get moving

Exercise can reduce stress by boosting the endorphins that make you feel good and distracting you from your wor- ries. It can also counteract the effects of stress on your sleep, which is so vital in dealing with stress throughout your day. In a recent study, physically fit women in their mid-60s were found to have essentially the same response to stress as women in their late 20s who were not in good shape.

Eat better

That candy bar might ameliorate your anxiety in the short term, but there are a number of foods that are better in arming you to combat stress for the long haul. For example, complex carbs, such as whole grain breads and oat- meal, boost serotonin that calms you, while omega-3 fatty acids found in salmon and tuna can prevent spikes in stress hormones. Snacking on nuts can protect from the effects of stress and drinking black tea can help you bounce back from stress more quickly.

Be mindful

Stress is often caused by worrying about something that happened yesterday or could happen tomorrow. Through meditation, positive affirmations, yoga, deep breathing or even coloring in an adult coloring book, you remain completely in the moment and push feelings of worry

and anxiety out of your mind.

YELLOW DOT PROGRAM

Do you or a loved one have a medical condition? Or do you take a medication that can’t be mixed with other meds?

Participants in the Yellow Dot Program place the yellow sticker on the bottom left corner of their vehicle’s rear window. This sticker alerts emergency response crews to check the vehicle’s glove compartment for important medical information about the driver and or passengers. If emergency professionals are aware of your condition, they are in a better position to correctly treat you, which could make the difference between life and death.

The program is a cooperative effort between the Pepperell Council on Aging, Pepperell Police Department, Pepperell Fire Department and Southern New Hampshire

Immediate Care/Pepperell Family Practice.

PEPPERELL IS BECOMING DEMENTIA FRIENDLY! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Would you like to be apart of something really special? If so, join the DEMENTIA FRIENDLY ACTION TEAM!!

Dementia Friendly Massachusetts is a grassroots movement designed to change the environment in our community to be more welcoming and supportive of people with dementia and their care partners. Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning that impacts the ability to complete everyday tasks, often re- quiring care provided by family members, friends, or other care partners. Over 14% of people in Massachusetts over the age of 65 experience dementia, with the number of people affected by dementia expected to increase as the general population ages. In response, over 160 communities across the Commonwealth are participating in this critical movement.

Each dementia-friendly community is different to meet the spe- cific needs of their residents. Educational

programs like Dementia Friends informational sessions help people throughout the community understand how to engage their neighbors with memory loss respectfully. Systems such as support groups and respite care services emotional relief to care partners. Residents with memory impairment can directly bene- fit from dementia-friendly programs such as memory cafés, secure transportation methods, and home adaptation services.

Environmental and cultural shifts in the public space encourage residents with dementia and their care partners to thrive.

All sectors of a community including citizens, businesses, ser- vices and supports, faith communities, the health care sector, legal and financial services, government services, and residen- tial settings play an essential role in creating a dementia- friendly community. Representatives from these sectors can advocate for real change in their industries by promoting de- mentia awareness and workplace training.

Dementia-friendly communities share one thing: the mission to make their neighborhoods inclusive, welcoming those touched by dementia to continue to be active, contributing citizens.

Pepperell is in the beginning stages of this project which we are calling the “OPEN ARMS PROJECT!” We have trained town employees and now it is the community’s turn to get in- volved and get excited. We are looking for interested indi- viduals that represent a cross section of church leaders, medi- cal professionals, healthcare and hospice professionals, bank- ers, business owners, library workers, youth in our communi- ty, local government officials and state officials to join this core team. This action team, once set up would meet monthly and discuss how we can better serve our community by be- coming dementia friendly.

If you would like to join our team please call the center today ! We are so excited go get moving with this project! Call 978-433-0326 to become part of the DEMENTIA FRIENDLY ACTION TEAM!!

We keep saying what a challenging year it has been but there is light at the end of the tunnel and we are already starting to see that bright brilliant light! The center with be doing a soft opening and the Friends couldn't be more thrilled. We know there will be restrictions but this is the first step to getting back together.

In March we paid for the corned beef and we want to thank Chef Walter and all the volunteers for a fantastic meal. It was yummy! We highly recommend the meals here at the center. There is just a $3 donation and it is worth every penny.

Unfortunately, we are not ready for our large meeting but the board will be having an in person meeting Tuesday, May 13 at 2pm. We will keep you posted when we can all get together again.

Until next month , get your shots, wash your hands, wear your mask and stay healthy! Miss you all!!

Sincerely, The Friends of the Pepperell Seniors
