ISO/TC 46/SC 9/WG 1 N 194 2002-09-09 [Working Draft 20925-1, as revised by SMPTE for ballot within its R30 committee]

Foreword

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.

International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.

Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.

Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

International Standard ISO 20925-1 was developed within Technical Committee ISO/TC 46, Information and documentation , Subcommittee SC 9, Presentation, identification and description of documents. The project was initiated by the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) and developed in cooperation with the participants in ISO Project 15706 for the International Standard Audiovisual Number (ISAN).

ISO 20925 consists of the following parts, under the general title Information and documentation — Version identifier for audiovisual works (V -ISAN).

— Part 1: Format and use

— Part 2: Registration procedures

Annexes A and B of Part 1 are normative sections of this International Standard.

Information and documentation — Version identifier for versions of audiovisual works (V -ISAN) — Part 1: Format and use

1 Scope

This International Standard specifies a system for version identification of audiovisual works to be used in conjunction with the International Standard Audiovisual Number (ISAN) defined in ISO 15706. An ISAN identifier combined with the version identifier specified in clause 4 of this International Standard shall be known as a V-ISAN identifier. A V-ISAN identifier shall be a registered, globally unique identifier of a version of an audiovisual work.

A V-ISAN identifier denotes a specific version of an audiovisual work throug hout its life and is intended for use wherever precise and unique identification of a specific version of an audiovisual work would be desirable, such as in audiovisual production and distribution systems and in broadcasting applications.

A V-ISAN identifier denotes a specific version of an audio-visual work as the unique compound of its component elements (e.g. its artistic content, languages, editing, and technical format) throughout its life and independent of any physical form in which that version is d istributed.

The assignment of a V-ISAN to a version of an audiovisual work shall not be used as evidence of the ownership of rights to either that version or to the audiovisual work itself.

2 Normative references

The following normative documents contain provisions that, through reference in this text, constitute provisions of this International Standard. For dated references, subsequent amendments to, or revisions of, these publications do not apply. However, parties to agreements based on this International Standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the normative documents indicated below. For undated references, the latest editions of the normative documents referred to applies. Members of ISO and IE C maintain registers of currently valid International Standards.

3 Terms and definitions

For the purposes of this International Standard, the following terms and definitions apply.

3.1

audiovisual work

Work consisting of a sequence of related images, with or without accompanying sound, which is intended to be made visible as a moving image through the use of devices, regardless of the medium of initial or subsequent fixation [ISO 15706:2002].

(6)

ISO/TC 46/SC 9/WG 1 N 194 2002-09-09 [Working Draft 20925-1, as revised by SMPTE for ballot within its R30 committee]

3.2 ISAN

International Standard Audiovisual Number allocated for the unique identification of an audiovisual work in accordance with ISO 15706.

3.3 V-ISAN

Unique identifier for a specific version of an audiovisual work allocated in accordance with Part 2 of this International Standard. A V-ISAN identifier is composed of a registered ISAN identifier in combination with a registered version identifier element appended to that ISAN identifier.

3.4 version

Particular aggregation of elements that affects the content of the audiovisual work.

NOTE — Any change that affects the content of an audiovisual work (e.g., artistic content, language, editing, or technical format) and which requires separate identification for the use or exploitation of that specific content may be treated as a new version for the purposes of assigning a V-ISAN identifier. See Annex B.

4 Construction of the V -ISAN

4.1 A V-ISAN identifier for a version of an audiovisual work shall incorporate the ISAN identifier for the audiovisual work from which that version is derived.

4.2 A V-ISAN identifier shall consist of an ISAN1 that has been registered in accordance with ISO 15706 followed by a version segment that consists of 8 hexadecimal digits using Arabic numerals 0 through 9 and letters A through F of the Latin alphabet. When the resulting string of 24 hexadecimal characters is registered with a V-ISAN registration agency, according to the procedures in Part 2 of this International Standard, it shall be known as a V-ISAN identifier.

EXAMPLE V-ISAN RRRR-RRRR-RRRR-EEEE -X-VVVV-VVVV-Y In the example above:

"RRRR-RRRR-RRRR-EEEE" represents a registered ISAN identifier for a specific audiovisual work.

"X" represents the check character for that ISAN identifier, calculated in accordance with ISO 15706.

“VVVV-VVVV” represents the version identifier element linked to that ISAN identifier. (The combination of the ISAN element above and the version identifier element constitute the V -ISAN identifier.)

"Y" represents the check digit for that V-ISAN identifier. It is computed over the positions labeled “R”, “E”, and

“V”. The position labeled “X” is not included in the computation of “Y”.

Figure 2: Check digit calculation for the V-ISAN.

The { }s show the range of identifiers included in each check digit

4.4 The value of zero for a V-ISAN identifier is prohibited in order to avoid the possibility of interpreting an ISAN identifier as a V-ISAN identifier.

4.5 It is not meaningful to express version information without reference to a specific audiovisual work. Therefore the version identifier element shall only appear in conjunction with the ISAN identifier for the work in question and in the form of a V -ISAN identifier. The version identifier element of a V -ISAN identifier shall have no meaning on its own.

4.6 A V-ISAN identifier shall signify only that it is a globally unique identifier that has been registered with an agency of the V-ISAN system. It shall not contain any internal codes or other meaningful elements.

5 Affixing and displaying the V-ISAN

5.1 The V-ISAN identifier for a version of an audiovisual work shall be incorporated permanently in, or affixed to, all occurrences of that specific version to the extent that it is technically feasible to do so.

5.2 The V-ISAN identifier should be included in the documentation, advertising and packaging associated with that specific version of a n audiovisual work.

5.3 When a V-ISAN identifier is printed or otherwise displayed in human-readable form (e.g. on labels, physical carriers, technical documentation, etc.), it shall be preceded by the letters V-ISAN and its correct check characters (see Annex A) shall be added within and at the end of the V-ISAN character string. If the context is such that the display could be considered as both human and machine readable, the check character requirements for human- readable display shall take precedence.

5.4 The inclusion of a V-ISAN identifier with a version of an audiovisual work shall conform to the specifications of ISO 15706 for inclusion of an ISAN identifier with that audiovisual work. It shall not be replaced or overwritten in the specific version that it identifies.

5.5 As an aid to accurate transcription of V-ISAN identifiers into human-readable form, a V -ISAN identifier shall be presented as 6 groups of 4 hexadecimal characters each with the check characters inserted as shown in the examples below. Each of these groups and the check characters shall be separated from one another by a hyphen or space. No internal meaning shall be ascribed to any combination of digits within these groups.

EXAMPLES:

V-ISAN 1881 66C7 3420 6541 9 9F3A 0245 U V-ISAN 1881 -66C7-3420-6541-9-9F3A-0245-U

5.6 The characters A through F appearing in a V-ISAN identifier and A through Z appearing in either check character shall be displayed in uppercase letters when a V-ISAN identifier is presented in human-readable form. In any machine -readable applications, the lowercase and uppercase forms of these characters shall be treated as equivalent.

5.7 If a version of an audiovisual work is issued in a specific product item that has its own product numbering system (e.g., a Global Trade Item Number of the EAN/UCC system), the V-ISAN identifier shall be displayed on the container and/or packaging of that product immediately below and clearly distinguished from any product numbers associated with the item.

5.8 Further details regarding methods of affixing a V-ISAN identifier to a version of an audiovisual work are explained in the user’s guide that is available from each of the V -ISAN registration agencies.

Annex A

(normative)

Check character for the V-ISAN

A.1 The purpose of the check character is to guard against errors resulting from improper transcription of a V- ISAN identifier.

A.2 The check character for a V-ISAN identifier shall be 1 alphanumeric character using Arabic numerals 0 through 9 and letters A through Z of the Latin alphabet. The check character for a V-ISAN identifier as a whole shall be calculated over the 16 hexadecimal digits of its ISAN element and the 8 hexadecimal digits of its version identifier element according to the MOD 37, 36 system specified in accordance with ISO 7064.

A.3 The check character for the ISAN character string shall be omitted during calculation of the check character for a V-ISAN character string.

A.4 Whenever a V -ISAN identifier is displayed in human-readable form its correct check character shall be added as the 26th character at the end of the V-ISAN character string. Note that the ISAN check character shall also be present in such cases so the resulting string of 26 chara cters incorporates two check characters: one for the ISAN (as the 17th character) and one for the V-ISAN (as the 26th character).

EXAMPLES:

V-ISAN 153C-7365-B36F-844C-N-8734-9420 -U V-ISAN 083A 3317 3E20 0000 6 8BA3 0357 5 V-ISAN 2B1A-FF17-3E20-6541-7-48CD-78B1-B

A.5 Validation of a V-ISAN identifier being entered into or retrieved from a database or other machine -readable format shall require both correct check characters (for the ISAN root element and for the full V-ISAN character string) to be presented and verified.

A.6 When a V -ISAN identifier is accepted into a system from human entry, the entry program shall:

a) silently discard any characters that are not hexadecimal digits or check characters (e.g., spaces, hyphens, or other punctuation used as separators in the V-ISAN character string);

b) ensure that there are exactly 24 hexadecimal digits and two alphanumeric check characters;

c) treat the 17th and 26thcharacters as check characters and confirm their correctness over the previous 16 and 24 dig its, respectively.

A.7 System applications involving entry and retrieval of V -ISAN identifiers should use the public domain software for V-ISAN check digit calculation provided by designated V-ISAN registration agencies.

Annex B

(informative)

Criteria for Assigning V-ISAN Identifiers for New Versions

B.1 For the purposes of assigning V -ISAN identifiers , a version of an audiovisual work may be defined by any of the following elements, alone or in combination:

 a specific language track or arrangement of language tracks;

 subtitling in a specific language;

 a specific image or sound format (e.g., wide screen or "pan & scan");

 editing of an audiovisual work for a specific purpose (e.g. television broadcast);

 a change in the technical data stream that affects the content of the work (e.g. a different software program to generate background images; the vertical blanking interval for closed captioning).

B.2 The following are examples of changes that shall not be treated as different versions of an audiovisual work and shall not result in the assignment of a new V-ISAN identifier:

 a change in the rights or ownership of an audiovisual work;

 a change in recording medium;

 a change in the price or fees associated with use of an audiovisual work.

Changes in descriptive material or packaging and changes in the storage or transmission of a work without any accompanying change in the content of the work should not be treated as new versions.

B.3 Further d etails regarding changes that constitute the creation of a new version for the purposes of assigning V- ISAN identifiers are available from the V-ISAN registration agencies.
