EDWARD EVANS ARTIST STATEMENT

Although I paint mainly for myself, it pleases me when somebody gets something out of what I do. Formal elements and the way we see interest me. I have always been attracted to a certain amount of illusion in painting and like how illusion arouses wonder about what is real. The paradox of illusion and reality is not a contradiction if we

consider “illusion” as one of the many shifting realities of life. Images and goals move on and fade as, once we achieve them, they somehow seem changed, different than what we had expected.

My paintings are non-objective, yet highly influenced by memories and feelings that are recalled and aroused as I paint. Childhood experiences, travel and recollections about how I have felt in specific places are recalled, filtered by time and my imagination to create the mood of my paintings. Foreign places are especially stimulating because they enable me to see with the fresh, unconditioned eyes of an outsider - more like a child. Other art also affects me. Both the old and new have much to offer. I admire the skills of the old masters, especially how artists like Caravaggio, El Greco and Botticelli largely established the moods of their paintings by how they painted drapery and light. The bravura, spontaneity and dynamic compositions of the abstract expressionists are also impressive and become subconsciously incorporated into my work.

I paint with an airbrush because spraying paint enables me to establish a flowing, illusionist quality that cannot be achieved by other painting techniques. Airbrushing has become so natural to me that it is no longer necessary to think about technique. This enables me to work in a meditative state, trusting my instincts and feelings and letting thoughts and memories become imbedded into my paintings. I am free to concentrate while working in a spontaneous manner. There is a blend of realism and abstraction, distant and here, past and present, memories and feelings -- a communion of the inner and outer world.

My painting, Increasing Altitude, alludes to being in an airplane and watching things change as the plane rises through clouds and layers of light. Looking down and seeing things differently arouses moods and questions. What am I seeing? The world appears smaller, more abstract, bigger, yet somehow smaller. Wonder, mystery and the eternal questions of life arise. My step-son and his wife are pilots and I enviously wonder what views from the cockpit are like.
