Welcome to ‹stanbul

On behalf of the Organizing Committee of the ‘1st PHARMACOGENOMICS ‹STANBUL SUMMIT, Increasing the Safety and Effectiveness of Personalized Therapy for Metabolic Disorders’ it is my great pleasure and honor to welcome you to ‹stanbul for the first edition of this summit series, to provide a platform to discuss the impact of pharmacogenomics in personalized healthcare. Pharmacogenomics studies and applications are important because of ethnic and cultural diversity, but also socio-economical, scientific and technological disparities over the world. The Summit covers these aspects, but also takes on a more global approach on the growing contribution of genomic information and biotechnological tools to the way medicines used in Metabolic Disorders are prescribed to patients, and as a consequence, how they are developed in industry. We will develop a scientific program of the highest standard covering keynote lectures by international experts, sessions of debates on the implementation of pharmacogenomics in clinical practice and a poster session, to which we encourage the submission of high quality abstracts. The Organizing Committee is also planning a special meeting which will give the opportunity for interaction among senior and junior researchers, medical, regulatory and industry experts in a wide range of disciplines linked to pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine. The Summit is a key activity for a growing network of professionals interested in the personalized therapy and pharmacogenomics knowledge for Metabolic Disease. The conference will be attended by a wide range of participants: pharmacists, biochemists, clinical pharmacologists, medical and molecular biologists, molecular geneticians, epidemiologists, bioinformatics experts, physicians expertised in cardiology, endocrinology, surgery (bariatric and general) and neuropsychiatry, family physicians, public health professionals, medical, regulatory and industry experts from Turkey, nearest countries and Europe.

Please save the date and we are looking forward to seeing you in ‹stanbul 2015.

‹stanbul The strategic setting of ‹stanbul, the only city in the world built on two continents, has formed its destiny as an imperial capital for 1600 years. From the empires of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman, this metropolis with its rich history and natural beauty, offers a friendly welcome and genuine hospitality. Numerous museums, ancient churches, synagogues, basilicas, mosques, mausoleums, palaces, bazaars and baths are standing today as the pride of all civilizations. With more than ten universities and many institutions, ‹stanbul is the most important centre of Turkish science and culture.

Restaurants and There is a wide choice of restaurants in ‹stanbul offering a broad Turkish Cuisine spectrum ranging from excellent national cuisine to first class international dishes. Traditional Turkish cuisine is famous for its many specialties prepared with fresh vegetables. There are lots of quality restaurants as well as fast-food shops in the vicinity of the hotels reserved for this meeting.

(11)

Shopping One of the most enjoyable parts of a trip to Turkey is shopping for the rich variety of Turkish crafts. ‹stanbul is a shopping paradise with its Covered Bazaar as well as the modern malls. Turkish carpets, kilims, suede and leatherwear as well as other items of clothing are the best buys. Copper, silver, brassware and jewellery are also choices for buying, along with works of ceramics and the famous Turkish meerschaum. In the Covered Bazaar bargaining over the sale price with shop traders is expected.

Travel within ‹stanbul Public boats which depart from Besiktas, Eminonu, Karakoy on the European Side and Kadikoy, Uskudar, Bostanci on the Asian Side. Please refer to the hotel concierge for more information while planning your trip within the city.

How to Get Around First and foremost, we recommend purchasing an ‹stanbul Kart to in ‹stanbul save you money on public transportation. The ‹stanbul Kart is a card

‹stanbul Kart that discounts your fare and now on many of the transportation methods including on ferries, metro and buses, you can only pay electronically which means that you have to use one of the approved passes, not a credit or debit card.

If you don’t have one, you are going to have to ask people on the bus if they have enough money preloaded onto their card and if a nice and willing person does, they can swipe their card for you and can pay them the fare amount.

The ‹stanbul Kart is only 6 TL plus whatever amount you wish to load onto the card. When you use the card you get a 10% discount off the normal fare. The way it works is that you pre-load it at one of the OMS reloading machines which can be found around the city at metro stations or you can load it at various newspaper stands. You only need to buy one card even if your traveling with a few people (up to 5 passengers), just as long as you load it with enough TL for everyone’s ride and make sure to swipe it as each person goes through the turnstile.

Metro + Funicular The Metro and Funicular in ‹stanbul are clean, modern and efficient. Each ride on the metro is 1.50 TL with an option to ride on 2 metro lines, 5 tram lines and 2 funiculars. Using the metro you can get to most popular areas within the city, including Topkapisaray, Taksim, and the Ataturk Int Airport. Even if the metro doesn’t stop exactly where you need it to, you’re likely to be dropped off within a short walking distance. The funicular is particularly convenient to get to Kabatas because walking would involve a painfully steep climb up the hill.

Dolmus Dolmuses are private minibuses that wait until all the seats are filled up before taking off. While the driver does have designated stops, if you want to get off somewhere else along the route, they can drop you off there too. Especially if you don’t know the area or what the stop looks like, tell the driver ahead of time where you would like to be dropped off, because if no one says anything the driver will continue driving to the next stop. On a dolmus you cannot use the ‹stanbul Kart and drivers prefer exact change, so be sure to carry small bills and coins. A dolmus ride can be anywhere from 3TL to 5TL, but make sure to ask the driver to clarify the cost.

(13)

Ferry (Vapur) You will love taking the ferry (or vapur in Turkish) because it is one of the best ways to see the city. In ‹stanbul, the ferry is a very common mode of transportation and depending on where you are going can be the quickest way across the city. Ferries in ‹stanbul cost between 1.5TL and 5 TL depending on the distance. You purchase a cup of tea or coffee and sip it with a beautiful view of the cityscape from the sea!

Most ferry lines take off from Eminonu, which is walking distance to Topkapi Saray. Another popular ferry route in the summer/winter is to the Prince Islands, the most popular being Kinaliada, Buyukada and Burgazada. You can spent a majority free day on Kinaliada, we highly recommend the trip.

Taxis Both airports in ‹stanbul have taxi stations. When in the city you may contact your hotel reception to request one. There is only one tariff in use and an initial starting fee of 2.95 Turkish Liras and a charge 2.83 Turkish Liras per kilometer is applied in ‹stanbul.

Airport The easiest and quickest way to get to and from either Ataturk Airport or Sabiha Gokcen Airport in ‹stanbul is by the Havatas airport bus. According to their website, http://www.havatas.com, The Havatas waiting area is in(European side, for Ataturk Airport) Taksim near the metro station, (Asian side, for Sabiha Gokcen Airport) Kad›köy near the dock and bus stops making it convenient to get to the Havatas, but it’s also easy to get to wherever you want to go if you have arrived with the Havatas from the airport.

(14)

Public airport shuttle buses (HAVATAS) run between the airport and the city center (Taksim Square) from 5.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. every half hour. It takes about 40 min from airport to the city centre. Transportation within the city centre is by bus or by taxi. All taxis have taximeters, and the rates are reasonable.

Taking a Havatas Public Bus to Taksim Square might be more recommendable for a trip to/from airport. The quickiest and comfortable way to cross Bosphorus, the water channel between Asia and Europe, could be considered as taking public boats which depart from Besiktas, Eminonu, Karakoy on the European Side and Kadikoy, Uskudar, Bostanci on the Asian Side. Please refer to the hotel concierge for more information while planning your trip within the city.

One way transfer (from Sabiha Gökçen airport – Hilton Kozyata¤› hotel - airport) is 85.-Euro including VAT per person. The type of vehicles are bus & midibus. For private vehicle, please kindly contact with meeting organization secreteriat.
