Who
is
eligible
for
Microsoft
Live@edu?

Current
students
enrolled
at
Centenary
College
of
Louisiana.

Do
I
need
to
use
a
Windows
PC
or
Microsoft
Internet
Explorer?

No.
All
the
Web‐based
services
included
in
Microsoft
Live@edu
can
be
accessed
from
Windows,
 Mac,
or
Linux
using
Internet
Explorer
or
Firefox.
Safari
and
other
browsers
are
also
supported.
 Microsoft
has
an
Open
Standards
mentality
with
this
product
and
will
continue
to
have
the
 philosophy
of
offering
flexibility
to
users.

 For
Safari
users,
Microsoft
offers
a
lighter
version
of
Windows
Live
Hotmail
with
minimal
 reliance
on
JavaScript,
but
with
the
same
5
GB
of
storage
that
everyone
else
gets.
Firefox
1.5+
 users
that
use
a
Mac
will
experience
heavy
use
of
JavaScript,
as
will
users
of
Internet
Explorer®.
 Microsoft
tests
against
a
variety
of
web
browsers
and
support
the
major
browsers
across
a
 variety
of
operating
system
platforms.

Internet
Explorer
from
7.0
down
to
5.5
versions,
the
 leading
versions
of
Firefox
(cross
platform)
and
Safari
(cross
platform)
are
supported
as
well
as
 Opera.

Basically
any
browser
supported
by
MSN®
or
Windows
Live
in
general
is
supported
for
 Microsoft
Live@edu.

We
also
do
browser
detection
to
tune
the
experience
the
end
user
 receives
based
on
the
browser’s
capabilities.

Getting
Started
with
Microsoft
Live@edu?

How
do
I
sign‐up?

If
you
are
enrolled
at
Centenary
College
of
Louisiana,
you
have
been
signed
up.

What
is
my
username
and
password?

Your
username
is
your
Centenary
username
plus
‘@my.centenary.edu’
(i.e.,
 [email protected]).
Your
password
is
initially
set
to
your
last
name
plus
the
last
four
digits
 of
your
social
security
number
(i.e.,
doe1234).

Why
is
the
Human
Interface
Proof
(HIP,
the
“weird”
letters
that
you
are
asked
to
type)

challenge
included
in
the
sign
up
process?

Human
Interface
Proof
is
the
bitmap
of
weird
letters
that
many
sites
bring
up
to
verify
that
they
 are
talking
with
a
human
and
not
an
automated
system.

Ticketmaster
uses
them
all
the
time
to
 help
prevent
people
from
writing
programs
that
automatically
purchase
tickets.
We
use
them
to
 keep
people
from
setting
up
spam
programs
through
Windows
Live
Hotmail.
This
HIP
challenge
 should
only
take
place
once
for
most
users.

This
is
something
we
are
regularly
re‐evaluating
and
 working
to
improve.

Student
Experience
with
Microsoft
Live@edu

Why
should
I
want
to
use
Microsoft
Live@edu?

Microsoft
Live@edu
offers
you
features
you
can
use
as
your
primary
account,
and
keep
it
after
 you
graduate.

 • Hotmail
is
the
most
used
webmail
service
in
the
world,
so
it’s
already
familiar
to
many
of
 your
friends
and
family.
 • 5
GB
inboxes.
That’s
plenty
of
space
to
keep
those
bulky
e‐mail
messages
packed
with
 pictures,
video
clips,
and
thesis
papers.
You
can
send
14
MB
message
size,
including
up
to
10
 MB
attachments,
and
up
to
50
attachments.
You
will
have,
spam‐
and
virus‐filtering,
a
 familiar
web‐based
interface
with
folders
and
preview
pane,
access
via
POP,
and
forwarding.
 • The
program
is
hosted
on
servers
managed
by
Microsoft
to
provide
high
levels
of
reliability,
 spam‐filtering
and
performance

 • In
addition
to
e‐mail,
the
Windows
Live
communication
services
include
more
than
just
 email,
such
as
instant
messaging,
blogging
and
ways
to
store
and
share
files
using
password‐ protected
spaces

(4)

• Many
of
your
classmates
will
be
using
the
set
of
Windows
Live
services,
so
it
will
be
efficient
 to
use
calendar
and
other
collaboration
tools
to
coordinate
both
academic
and
non‐ academic
activities

Can
I
search
my
email?

Yes.

There
are
a
variety
of
useful
and
powerful,
searching
capabilities
available
through
the
web
 and
also
rich
clients
–
the
Windows
Live
Mail
client
also
takes
advantage
of
Microsoft’s
 operating
system
search
capabilities
for
integrated
desktop
search.

How
can
I
share
calendar
with
others?
Does
the
calendar
have
“free/busy”
look
up?

You
can
access
published
calendars
through
iCalendar
and
also
publish
your
calendar
for
other
 users
to
see
as
well
(and
control
the
amount
of
detail
visible).

All
local
Outlook
calendar
 capabilities
are
also
available
through
the
use
of
the
Outlook
Connector
provided
free
to
 Windows
Live
Hotmail
users.

What
happens
to
my
e‐mail
account
when
I
graduate?

One
advantage
of
Microsoft
Live@edu
is
that
you
won't
have
to
abandon
or
export
your
email,
 contacts,
or
calendar
items
when
you
graduate
from
Centenary
College
of
Louisiana.
You
can
 continue
to
use
Microsoft
Live@edu
services
after
you
graduate
if
you
wish.
Once
you
are
no
 longer
a
full‐time
student
at
Centenary
College
of
Louisiana,
the
standard
Windows
Live
Hotmail
 advertising
will
appear
in
the
interface
for
your
email,
calendar,
etc.
If
you
don't
log
in
for
180
 days,
any
mail
messages
stored
on
the
Microsoft
Live@edu
server
will
be
deleted,
but
the
 account
itself
will
remain.
If
you
log
in
after
a
180‐day
lapse,
you
can
resume
using
email
 services
but
all
your
old
messages
will
be
gone.

Do
these
e‐mail
accounts
ever
expire?

If
you
don’t
log
in
to
your
e‐mail
that
include
ads
(for
example
Alumni)
at
least
once
every
180
 days
the
contents
of
your
inbox
will
be
deleted.
However,
the
account
itself
will
remain,
and
the
 inbox
will
generate
anew
on
the
user’s
next
authentication.

For
most
student
e‐mail
where
ads
 are
suppressed,
inbox
contents
will
be
deleted
after
180
days
of
inactivity.

Using
Microsoft
Live@edu:
Technical
information,
how‐to,
and
support

How
do
I
check
my
mail
using
Microsoft
Live@edu?

Once
you
have
created
your
Microsoft
Live@edu,
you
can
log
into
it
at
http://mail.live.com
or
 click
the
Windows
Live
Webmail
link
on
the
Centenary
College
of
Louisiana
home
page.

(5)

Please
note
that
this
link
will
direct
you
to
the
main
Live
Mail
logon
page.
You
will
need
to
enter
 your
full
email
address
as
your
Windows
Live
ID‐‐
e.g.
[email protected]

What
if
I
forget
my
password?

Go
to
http://mail.live.com
and
click
‘Forgot
my
password’

Can
I
disable
the
Windows
Live
Today
Screen?

Yes.
In
the
Mail
view,
under
Options,
there
is
a
radio
button
that
allows
the
user
to
Skip
the
 Today
page
and
go
directly
to
mail.

(6)

How
much
email
storage
space
do
I
get?

5
GB
inboxes.
That’s
plenty
of
space
to
keep
those
bulky
e‐mail
messages
packed
with
pictures,
 video
clips,
and
thesis
papers.

What
is
the
message’s
maximum
size
(including
attachments)?

You
can
send
14
MB
message
size,
including
up
to
10
MB
attachments,
and
up
to
50
 attachments.

Is
there
any
restriction
on
the
maximum
number
of
emails
that
I
may
send
per
day
(for

ex:
can
I
send
one
email
to
all
the
students)?

The
only
limit
is
that
users
can
only
send
OUT
from
Hotmail
500
mails
per
day.

Each
mail
is
 essentially
an
alias
in
the
To,
Cc
or
Bcc
line.

That
means
you
can
send
100
mails
to
5
people
or
5
 messages
to
100
people,
etc.
 Note
that
emails
sent
between
users
in
the
school
do
not
count
against
the
daily
maximum.
So
a
 TA
who
needs
to
send
email
to
3
classes
of
250
students
each
can
send
all
750
emails,
and
they
 do
not
count
against
the
500
maximum.

How
can
I
use
mail
clients,
such
as
Thunderbird
and
Outlook,
with
Microsoft

Live@edu?

If
you
are
already
familiar
with
how
to
configure
a
mail
client,
the
general
settings
are:
 Incoming
Mail
Server:

 server
name:
pop3.live.com
 protocol:

using
SSL

using

 Username:
enter
your
full
email
address
(FirstLetterFullLastName@
my.centenary.edu)

Can
I
check
my
email
using
my
mobile
phone?

Yes.
There
are
a
two
ways
to
check
your
Windows
Live
Hotmail
using
an
Internet‐enabled
 mobile
phone:

1.

Using
a
mail
client
on
your
phone
‐
If
your
mobile
phone
has
a
mail
client
installed,
you
can
 configure
it
to
check
your
Windows
Live
Hotmail
via
a
POP
connection,
using
the
settings
 above.
NOTE:
We
recommend
using
the
"Leave
Messages
On
Server"
option
if
your
client

(7)

supports
it.
If
you
do
not
use
this
setting,
your
messages
will
download
on
your
phone
and
 be
removed
from
the
server.

Click
here
for
information
on
Windows
Mobile
phones:

 http://mobile.live.com/GoLive/

2.

Using
your
phone's
web
browser
‐
If
your
mobile
phone
has
a
web
browser,
point
it
to
 http://mobile.live.com/portal/.
This
portal
includes
a
webmail
interface
optimized
for
 mobile
devices.
You
can
sign
in
with
your
Windows
Live
ID
and
password.

How
does
the
calendar
system
synchronize
with
mobile
devices?

Calendar
sync
to
mobile
devices
is
supported
in
a
variety
of
way.

First,
if
the
mobile
device
uses
 Windows
Mobile®,
Microsoft
provides
a
client
that
provides
access
to
Windows
Live
data
over
 the
air
and
also
synchronizes
through
ActiveSync
®or
the
Windows
Mobile
Device
Center
in
 Windows
Vista®.

Additionally,
there
are
a
number
of
other
synchronization
products
available
 to
sync
data
to
mobile
devices
on
Windows
(and
for
different
calendar
applications)
and
also
on
 other
operating
systems.

With
our
standards
support
users
will
be
able
to
sync
their
Window
 Live
calendar
on
a
wide
variety
of
available
mobile
devices.

How
do
I
get
alerts
on
my
cell
phone?

You
can
sign
up
for
text
alerts
from
the
Windows
Live
Alerts
service‐
 http://alerts.live.com/Alerts/
 (Recipients
may
be
a
charged
a
fee
by
their
mobile
provider
to
receive
messages.)

Security,
Privacy
and
Spam
Management

How
Does
Microsoft
Live@edu
handle
spam?

There
are
a
number
of
methodologies
to
combat
spam
on
the
Windows
Live
Hotmail
platform.
 SmartScreen™
Technology
learns
to
detect
spam
based
on
you
reporting
spam
in
your
inbox.
 SenderID
Framework
matches
the
sender’s
email
address
against
their
IP
address
to
protect
 against
spoofing.

About
95%
of
all
spam
and
99%
of
image‐based
spam
are
blocked.
While
 spam
traffic
has
increased
40%
across
the
Internet,
Hotmail
spam
is
down
80%
over
the
past
 year
thanks
to
the
work
of
our
spam‐fighting
team
and
technologies.
 If
using
the
web
interface,
all
e‐mail
undergoes
a
virus
check/scan.

However,
since
the
anti‐virus
 tools
are
server
side,
this
does
not
apply
if
you
use
POP.

See
http://postmaster.hotmail.com/
 for
more
details.

Do
I
have
the
ability
to
control
anti‐spam
options,
for
example,
training
the
system

what
is
spam?

(8)

Yes,
you
can
have
the
opportunity
to
identify
certain
e‐mails
as
safe
versus
unsafe,
and
Hotmail
 also
“learns”
based
on
user
actions
to
mark
spam.

Furthermore,
you
can
set
individual
junk
mail
 folder
rules,
block
lists,
and
safe
lists.

Can
I
perform
message
filtering
from
the
webmail
interface?

Yes,
absolutely.

This
capability
is
available
under
the
option
setting
process
for
each
individual
 email
user
in
the
web
interface.

We
also
comment
that
because
of
our
rich
client
support
 through
Windows
Live
Mail
or
Outlook
the
user
also
has
access
to
the
additional
capabilities
 provided
by
those
clients.

Is
there
an
ability
to
“trust”
and
“block”
an
email
address
directly
from
the
webmail

interface?

Yes.

We
support
allowed
and
blocked
users
in
our
interfaces
via
the
web
and
also
in
rich
clients
 such
as
Windows
Live
Mail
and
Outlook.

Please
explain
how
data
is
physically
secured.
For
example:
Is
the
data
center
locked

down
to
authorized
individuals?
Are
emails
encrypted
on
local
disk?

Data
is
stored
on
Microsoft
servers
where
all
the
common
Microsoft
practices
for
security
are
 followed.
Microsoft
does
thorough
security
testing;
Microsoft
has
third
parties
do
penetration
 testing;
Microsoft
uses
best
practices
to
maximize
security
of
the
servers
and
prevention
of
 unauthorized
network
access;

Microsoft
only
allows
select
personnel
with
approved
clearance
 to
have
access
to
the
live
site.
 •

Will
someone
from
Microsoft
be
reading
my
email?

No,
Microsoft
will
not
read
your
email.
See
Microsoft’s
statements
on
this
at
 http://privacy.microsoft.com/en‐us/default.aspx
and
http://privacy.microsoft.com/en‐ us/fullnotice.aspx
.
While
an
automated
process
indexes
your
email
content
for
fast
search
 retrieval,
no
humans
at
Microsoft
will
be
looking
at
your
email.

Will
Microsoft
have
the
ability
to
investigate
the
accounts
that
they
are
providing

through
the
Microsoft
Live@edu
program?

By
opening
and
using
your
account,
you
agree
and
consent
that
Centenary
College
of
Louisiana
 may
access
your
account
for
administrative
and
other
purposes
such
as
password
resets
and
 compliance
with
university
policies
governing
this
service.

This
may
require
Microsoft
to
access
 and
disclose
to
Centenary
College
of
Louisiana
any
information
stored
within
the
account.

Does
Microsoft
share
or
sell
my
contact
information
with
third
parties?

No,
we
don’t
share
or
sell
any
contact
information
unless
you
opt
