Buses are an ideal way to get around within cities and adja-cent regions. A closely spaced network of bus stops makes sure you’ll never have to walk too far. Some regional bus li-nes may have special designations such as “Stadtlinie” (city line) or “Ortsbus” (O – local bus).
NachtExpress (NE – night express)
NachtExpress buses and regional trains help you get around after hours – along with regular RegionalExpress, Regional-Bahn and S-Regional-Bahn trains. As a rule, NachtExpress vehicles run every 60 minutes at weekends and before holidays, de-parting from central train stations and bus malls and going to the outlying areas or neighbouring cities. In some cities NachtExpress buses and trains run every night.
TaxiBus
A TaxiBus is a taxi that always follows a set route and runs on a predetermined schedule just like a regular bus. How -ever, a TaxiBus must be ordered no later than 30 minutes prior to the desired time of departure. TaxiBuses can be used with valid VRR tickets; tickets can be purchased from the driver. Please contact your local public transport company for additional information.
AnrufSammelTaxi (AST – collective call taxi)
In most rural and suburban areas, ASTs depart from AST stops at scheduled times. Customers can select the des-tination within a certain service area; ASTs do not follow fixed routes, so you can have the driver drop you off right at your front door. ASTs must be ordered by phone at least 30 minutes prior to departure. A special AST ticket is required. This ticket only costs slightly more than a VRR ticket. Please note that AST tickets do not allow you to use any other VRR services.
Die Verkehrsmittel
RegionalExpress (RE – regional express trains)
RegionalExpress trains allow you to travel longer distances between cities quickly and comfortably.
RegionalBahn (RB – regional trains)
RegionalBahn trains usually connect cities with the surrounding areas and stop at all stations. S-Bahn (S – express trains)
S-Bahn connections make up the backbone of the VRR train system. They service all stations along the main traffic corridors.
Stadtbahn (U – underground)
Stadtbahn trains run at high frequencies and travel below ground or on designated tracks above ground, which makes them a great way to get around town without being slowed down by traffic. The scenic Schwebebahn (suspended train) in Wuppertal, the fully automated SkyTrain at the Düsseldorf Airport and the H-Bahn in Dortmund are also part of the Stadtbahn system.
SchnellBus (SB – express bus)
SchnellBus lines run wherever train tracks are not available and connect central locations as directly as possible. CityExpress (CE – city express bus)
CityExpress buses give you a way to travel quickly within cities. They run at high frequencies and only service select bus stops.
Straßenbahn (tram)
Special services for special destinations
Virtually all cities within the VRR area offer, in addition to our standard transport services, special amenities for events, museum visits, ship cruises, and car sharing. You’ll be surprised by the wide variety of services we offer. Please remember that all of our drivers will be happy to help you whenever you travel with us.
Schedule Books
Most of our schedules are published annually as convenient books – either in January or in June. They contain all the schedules and information you need to travel with VRR. Some schedule books also contain detailed maps to help you get around. Please note that schedule books are only available in German.

Journey Planner: Online Or On Your Mobile
The online journey planner at www.vrr.de/en is a conveni-ent alternative to printed schedule books. Just conveni-enter your point of departure and where you would like to go, and you’ll get all the information you need – including maps of most train stations and stops. You can also generate schedules for any line at any stop in the VRR area or get a list of all lines and departure times at a certain stop or train station.
Your WAP-enabled mobile phone lets you access the jour-ney planner as well. Just go to wap.vrr.de or pda.vrr.de.

Assuring Quality For Satisfied Customers
Competition for better service
In recent years, competition has begun to play an important role in regional train traffic: VRR bids out train routes in a European competition process and selects the competitor with the most attractive offer. Quality is an important factor in the competitor selection process – to the benefit of our customers. All contracts awarded to rail companies contain quality standards.
Rail companies that do not meet these standards have to pay penalties. In order to make sure all quality standards are met, VRR has developed a state-of-the-art quality con-trol system that objectively measures service quality and includes customer opinions by conducting regular surveys. This system is part of our contract with the railroad compa-nies and ensures that the Deutsche Bahn and the various private companies such as Regiobahn, Abellio, Prignitzer Eisenbahn and NordWestBahn have a vested interest in providing top-notch service to you.

Travel safely
The “Zentralstelle für Sicherheit und Prävention” (ZeRP, central office for security and prevention) interprets report data and diffuses problems at stops and stations. These ac-tivities have been aided by committed customers and have lead to visible results.
Another important element is the “prevention kit,” which is well-known and in demand even beyond the VRR’s borders. It details and documents solutions to various types of pro-blems.
ZeRP has also started numerous problem-oriented projects beginning in 2001 – such as the project “Youngsters and Graffiti”. VRR also supports existing projects of various pub-lic transport companies – for example the educational pro-ject “Adolescent Bus Escorts”, and helps interested trans-port companies with the introduction of similar projects. Customers help ensure quality
Our own customers play an active role in ensuring that our quality standards are met. They help us and our transport companies improve our services. In recent years, over 300 volunteer LinienScouts (line scouts) have been keeping us informed about punctuality, safety, service and comfort. By giving us the customers’ point of view, LinienScouts supply important indications about where our services can be improved. This means that volunteers play a vital role in making our quality control offensive successful.
Well-kept train stations don’t just make a trip more enjoya-ble, they also make the surrounding area more attractive. That’s why volunteer “Bahnhofspaten” (station chaperones) keep a watchful eye over “their” station. They take respon-sibility and keep their station attractive by reporting any damage to the responsible rail company.
The unique pilot project “citizens advise citizens” is another way in which volunteers make a difference. Advisors perso-nally inform fellow citizens about current recreational events and about the public transport services in their part of town. This project originated in Hilden, but this highly individual form of information exchange is expected to be expanded to other cities.
