The Part-Time MBA Program is conducted over two years at WHU’s campus in Düsseldorf.

After a one-week kick-off at the beginning of september, the part-time format comprises

classroom-based weekend courses and is especially designed for professionals wishing

to earn a high-quality MBA degree while continuing to pursue a full-time career.

Program Format

Confronted with complex demands and a heavy workload on a daily basis, professionals must be able to grasp complex problems quickly, react rapidly to changing circumstances and communicate effectively. To this end, our Part-Time MBA Program is designed as a gen-eral management program and is aimed at those who want to enhance, deepen or develop their knowledge in the fields of business administration and economics, and acquire the skills to perform successfully in a challenging global environment. Moreover, there is a special focus on personal and leadership competencies throughout the program. Thereby, you develop the skills to take over strategic management functions within a business organization.

To convey an integral understanding of the core functions of an organization, the first-year modules cover basic management concepts and theories as well as an introduction to the concepts and tools of economic analysis.

The fundamental strength of this program in General Management means that the first-year theoretical and practical content provides a solid base for the conveyance of in-depth knowledge in the fields of Marketing and Sales, Advanced Finance and Accounting, Strategy and Organization, Operations, Innovations & Entrepreneurship.

The International Module is designed to foster an understanding of business opportunities and management challenges in different parts of the world. Specialist lectures given by senior faculty members of our renowned partner schools cover sensitive issues that are relevant to the local business environments. Company visits develop a deeper understanding of management in emerging economies.

The program concludes with the preparation of the Master Thesis. The thesis serves to demonstrate the student’s ability to examine a challenging business issue as part of a company project or an independent research topic by using academic research methods.

Core Module 2 – Finance & accounting

The Finance & Accounting Module gives you an introduction to the topics of Managerial Finance as well as Financial and Managerial Accounting. In the Finance section, students develop a thorough understanding of financial decision-making and investments within organizations as well as of capital markets. The Accounting section covers the use of financial and non-financial data to make managerial deci-sions, understanding the impact of the corporate activities on a company’s financial statements and highlighting the behavioral aspects of management accounting. Thus, the Finance & Accounting Module provides you with a set of tools necessary for an integrated understanding of capital markets, financial decision-making, managerial accounting and financial reporting.

Core Module 3 – Business economics

Business Economics is all about analyzing economic inter-action and developing an understanding of how markets, competition and the global economy work. Thus, in the Business Economics Module, a single company’s

Core Modules

perspective is combined with an overview of competitive strategy as well as global macroeconomic interdependen-cies. This module enhances your capability to analyze and predict market outcomes. You will learn how to apply the tools of microeconomic analysis and game theory to sup-port a business organization in thinking strategically and making decisions on competitive strategy. Further topics discussed in this module include international trade, for-eign direct investment activities, forfor-eign exchange market transactions and the functioning of the international monetary system.

Core Module 4 – Business Functions: The Value Chain

The Value Chain encompasses the chain of activities of a business organization oper ating in a specific market. This module deals with tools and concepts applied in value chain activities such as Operations Management, Strategic Sourcing and Marketing. The Operations Management section enables you to understand process management as well as management models for industrial excellence. The Strategic Sourcing section will convey in-depth infor-mation on supply management essentials and selected concepts, and based on these, an understanding of how to manage the triangle of “cost out, value in, risk manage-ment” from a purchasing perspective.

Core Module 1 – The Business Organization

In this introductory Business Organization Module, you will learn about the concept of General Management, the Foundations of Strategy and Organizational Behavior. Management is all about making the right decisions at the right time: it is the general manager, operating at execu-tive level, who is typically responsible for making decisions regarding products, markets or the company’s strategic vision. The Business Organization Module therefore covers the main issues the general manager faces in a business organization: strategy, structure and leadership.

Concentration Module 1 – Marketing & Sales

Marketing contains the word “market”. Markets are creat-ed by people. An understanding of the buying behavior and selling success of people and organizations is essential. Marketing & Sales knowledge is crucial to success in any business. This mod-ule embraces the three key areas of B2B Sales Manage-ment, Brand and Price Management as well as Relation-ship and Service Management. It gives you the knowledge you need to build a high-performance sales force and to understand the external and internal interactions in B2B sales. It addresses the importance of brands and price, and finally creates an understanding of how to establish profit-able customer relationships by delivering effective services to customers.

Concentration Module 2 – advanced Finance & accounting

Concentration Module 3 – Strategy & Organization

This Concentration Module provides specific insights into a wide range of strategy-related topics at both, corporate and business unit levels. The Personal Leadership Module includes various courses distributed throughout the pro-gram. Approaches to this topic consist of lectures and highly interactive discussions with renowned speakers from the academic and the corporate world. Excellence in manage-ment requires mastering human relation skills – communication, collaboration, clarity and confidence. When thinking about communication, most people concentrate on content and tend to forget about delivery. Integrated courses will boost the students’ soft skills by e. g.:

The Birkman Method® is a scientifically developed, multi-dimensional assessment designed

to help you achieve more at work. It integrates behavioral, motivational and occupational data together to predict behavior and work satisfaction across situations. The Birkman Method® is

the personality assessment for improving people skills and aligning roles and relationships for maximum productivity and success. Offered and analyzed by a certified trainer, this profile and subsequent coaching assists the candidate in working with the assigned study groups during the program – and with colleagues in the workplace at any time.

Clearly, personal development is just that – personal. During this stage of the process, par-ticipants benefit from skilled and certified coaches experienced with issues confronting the management world. Students delve further into themselves to develop a framework to move forward individually while leading others. As the coaches also come from various business and cultural milieus, they are best suited to guide candidates – regardless of background.

Perfecting leadership skills needs practical experience. Outdoor training offers exactly this in a different and challenging environment. Experienced trainers with extensive leadership experience and profound outdoor skills take the study groups to challenging leadership tasks in the outback. Adapted to individual fitness levels, training will assist personal development, promote teambuilding and give a unique opportunity to sharpen leadership skills.

The program finishes with the final stage of the Personal Leadership Module in which the students will present their individual leadership credo intended to guide them to the next step in their professional career.

In the present dynamic and competitive business environment, managers are expected

to provide direction and inspiration within their companies. Today’s managers must play

a number of roles in which they are highly visible to their coworkers and to the public

at large. In order to equip the students with crucial soft skills, the Part-Time MBA Program

contains a compulsory Personal Leadership Module.

“After 5 years of work experience, it was a good time to reflect, look back and try to connect the dots that made me get to where I was and most importantly trace the draft for the future. As a chemist by training, and having worked 5 years in marketing, I was looking forward to a more solid business knowledge foundation.

The program has brought me to an exciting new position with global responsibility in a completely new market thanks to the knowl edge and perspective that I acquired. But most importantly, it gave me a very valuable personal dimension, guiding and forcing me to take time to think about myself, my values and my passions.”

AnJA BISCHOFF

MBA 2013, Commerzbank AG/parental leave

“Motherhood and a Master’s degree at the same time? The structure of the Part-Time MBA Program at WHU enabled me to balance both child care and career development.

Using my parental leave to earn a top-notch MBA allowed me to re-enter the business world even at a higher level. The most important things WHU offers besides an excellent education are great people and a great network, which will accompany me far beyond the university.”

KARIn BeRnLOCHneR

MBA 2014, Deloitte Consulting GmbH

“Combining WHU’s Part-Time MBA Program with my second parental leave has been a great decision, as I filled the ‘career break’ by furthering my education. While taking care of the kids during the day, I could use the evenings to study. Although I had to fly in from Munich for the weekends, it was never a problem to attend classes:

my husband took care of the kids and WHU was very supportive regarding unforeseen organizational issues.

Regarding my career, the MBA did not only push it forward by offering me a second degree, but also enabled me to gain in-depth knowledge which I could immediately apply at work. Additionally, I built a strong network within the WHU community and gained friends for life.” encounter new areas of expertise, but to do so in a very flexible and

rewarding way – namely during weekends. In addition to the standard MBA lectures, WHU is leading the way by offering great personal and leadership development modules.

The greatest value of the MBA is the people one studies with … WHU certainly selects great candidates.”

CHRISTIAn UnDeRWOOD

MBA 2012, sxCEs CoMMUnICATIon AG

“Those who wish to be self-employed have a thousand questions. WHU helped me to ask the right questions – and find the right answers. Entrepreneurship is a top priority here. And the exchange of ideas and experience with other founders is truly stimulating. The Part-Time MBA Program gave me the tools and the self- confidence to make my dream of my own company come true – I would definitely do it all over again.”

CLAUDIUS SenST MBA 2013, Axel springer AG

“During the week I was usually traveling for business. In addition, I wanted to use the weekends to obtain another important qualification. The Part-Time MBA Program in Düsseldorf helped me to do so – with a course of study that matches any full-time program.

I gained insights in many areas and developed tools I could directly apply to my job. I enjoyed the discussions with professors who are familiar with practical operations and are used to working with manag-ers.
