VTEK University of Applied Sciences and Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia will be merging into a new higher education institution

called Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, beginning operations on 1 August 2008. Metropolia is a competitive

university of applied sciences measuring up to high international standards that focuses on producing innovative solutions especially

for the needs of the Helsinki metropolitan area. Students can apply for the degree programmes commencing in the autumn of 2008

through the spring 2008 joint application process.

There are 48 Bachelor’s degree programmes and 13 Master’s degree programmes in four faculties: Culture, Economics and Business

Administration, Health Care and Social Services, and Technology. The degree programmes conducted in Finnish are introduced in

the Finnish Applicant’s Guide

2008 (Hakijan opas 2008).

Metropolia offers 8 Bachelor’s degree programmes conducted in English. These full-time occupationally-oriented higher education

studies are implemented mainly during daytime. Since higher education is funded by the state through the Ministry of Education,

students enrolled in regular degree studies pay no tuition fees.

Metropolia is located in Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa with good communications. The Helsinki region offers a wide selection of leisure

activities – libraries, museums, theatres and concerts and plenty of sports facilities. It takes 3.5–4.5 years to graduate. Studies are

measured in units called credit points, which are based on the amount of work put in. An average academic year consists of 1,600

hours of work, which is equivalent to 60 ECTS credits.

The students engage in joint working life and business projects across degree programmes in the capital region. The advantage of

being located in the capital region is the large number of training opportunities and jobs. Moreover, our partner institutions around

the world offer valuable opportunities for international experiences through student exchange. Graduates will be experts in their

fi elds, capable of entering the labour market in development, design and supervisor positions or as independent entrepreneurs.

According to a nationwide image survey, EVTEK University of Applied Sciences and Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia are not only well

known and attractive but also rate highly in terms of overall image.

Degree Programme in European Management

T

his challenging four-year European Management (EM) programme leads to a double degree programme, which means that students receive two Bachelor´s diplomas on graduation: a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) from the University of Lincoln and a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) from Metropolia.

A European Management student studies in both Finland and England and completes a 6-month work placement. The fi rst two years of studies are here in Metropolia at the Myyrmäki campus and the entire third year is in Lincoln (England). The fourth and fi nal year is a combination of work experience and writing the bachelor’s thesis. Many students do this in another country and so add a third international element to their profi le. The majority of the teaching on the EM programme is in English but some courses are lectured in Finnish. If you are not Finnish, you will need a good knowledge and command of the Finnish language to be able to complete the EM programme.

Our graduates have always found very good jobs and often gone on to further studies - Treasury Analyst, Sales-, Project or Key Account Manager, Business Developer, Currency Dealer, Legal Controller.

www.metropolia.fi

FINNISH NATIONWIDE JOINT

APPLICATION SYSTEM

I

n order to apply successfully it is crucial to follow the instructions exactly as given. Therefore, please read all the instructions carefully before starting the application process.

The professionally-oriented higher education institutions use the English translation ‘polytechnic’ or ‘university of applied sciences’. We have used the abbreviation UAS for University of Applied Sciences.

Applications to the degree programmes conducted in English are submitted through the nationwide system of joint application. An applicant can apply for up to four different degree programmes at 25 polytechnics/UAS in Finland by using the same application form. Check the degree programmes offered in the Finnish Polytechnics/UAS at www. admissions.fi => Degree Programmes.

The nationwide joint application period for international degree pro-gramme studies will begin on 14 January 2008 and will end on 15 February 2008 at 4.15 pm Finnish time (+2 hrs GMT). It is not possible to apply outside the application period and all applications must be submitted before the closing time.

ELIGIBILITY

Metropolia does not use discretionary admission and therefore, if an appli-cant is found not eligible, his/her application will be rejected automatically. Eligibility for studies at polytechnics/UAS is achieved by the following education (minimum of 12 years of schooling):

– the Matriculation Examination or upper secondary examination completed in Finland

– European Baccalaureate

– International Baccalaureate or Reifeprüfung examination – vocational qualifi cation of three years or more in duration – a non-Finnish degree or studies equivalent to the above mentioned qualifi cations

– a vocational qualifi cation of less than three years in duration gives the eligibility to the corresponding fi eld.

The AICE Diploma does not provide the eligibility to apply for studies at polytechnics/UAS.

Those applying with a non-Finnish qualifi cation must have completed this education before the end of the application period on 15 February 2008. Those applying with a Finnish qualifi cation and who will graduate in spring 2008 can apply with the latest term certifi cate.

More detailed instructions are available at www.admissions.fi .

FINNISH LANGUAGE SKILL REQUIREMENT

In addition to the above-mentioned there is a Finnish language requirement in three of the degree programmes:

1. Degree Programmes in Social Services and Nursing: applicants must have a command of Finnish of basic level 2 or higher. Furthermore, all non-native speakers must pass the Finnish language test.

2. Degree Programme in European Management: most of the teaching in the European Management degree programme is conducted in English but some courses are lectured in Finnish. Therefore, the Finnish language test is compulsory for all non-native speakers.

Other degree programmes of Metropolia do not have any Finnish language skill requirements.

More information on the Finnish language requirements can be found at

www.metropolia.fi .

ONLINE APPLICATION AT

The application form can be submitted online during the application period

14 January 2008–15 February 2008 at www.admissions.fi . Please note that when fi lling the application you will be asked for information regarding your previous education. So please have your school certifi cates (non-Finnish applicants should also take their passport if they have one) with you when you will fi ll in the application.

Applicants are allowed to fi ll in only one application per application period

but they can apply for a maximum of four different degree programmes with the same application form. The applications are collected in the joint application register. The polytechnics/UAS will dismiss multiple applications made by one applicant.

Applicants must decide on an order of preference between the degree programmes (maximum 4) they are applying for. The 1st option should be the degree programme where the applicant primarily wants to get admitted. The 2nd option should be the degree programme where the applicant wants to get admitted if he/she cannot get admitted to the fi rst option, the 3rd option should be the degree programme where the applicant wants to get admitted if he/she cannot get admitted to the fi rst or second option etc. The applicant can be offered only one study place which will be as high as possible in the applicant’s order of preference. Please note that the order of preference is binding and determines where the applicant will be admitted.

The Admissions Offi ce of the fi rst choice polytechnic/UAS processes the application in question. Therefore, if your contact information changes or you have questions regarding your application, please contact the Admissions Offi ce of the fi rst choice polytechnic/UAS. You will receive the contact information in a confi rmation e-mail within 24 hours of sending the online application. Whenever you contact the Admissions Offi ce, please always remember to include at least your full name, application number and the degree programme of your fi rst choice.

ONE STUDY PLACE PER YEAR

A

ccording to the one-study-place-per-year provision, a student may accept only one study place leading to a higher education degree during one academic year. The purpose of this is to ensure admission to higher education institutions for as many students as possible. Higher education degrees are Bachelor’s degrees and Master’s degrees awarded by universities, and Bachelor’s degrees and Master’s degrees awarded by polytechnics/UAS. The provision applies to all degree studies in higher education regardless of how the studies are provided. The provision does not apply to the National Defence College, the Police College of Finland and the Åland Polytechnic.

The academic year (from 1 August to 31 July) is the set framework for the provision. The provision does not prevent acceptance to a place in another degree programme during another academic year. However, during one academic year (1 August–31 July) the applicant can accept only one study place at a higher education institution, even if he/she registers as absent or resigns from the institution.
