Introduction

The Vysočina Region stretches across the central part of the

Czech Republic, and its picturesque landscape is especially

sought after by those who love well-preserved nature. The

entire territory of the Region is fi lled by the

Bohemian-Moravian Highlands, the most extensive orographic range

in the Czech Republic, a landscape divided by gentle hills,

river valleys, and a number of forests and woods. Since time

immemorial, the landscape has included man-made lakes, the

oldest of which were established as early as in the 13th century.

A number of water reservoirs have been built, some of which

serve as fresh water reservoirs while others are sought-after

recreational areas.

The river network is dense and richly branched out, and

a number of rivers have their sources here. For its natural

and cultural value, signifi cant parts of Vysočina enjoy the

status of protected territories. Protection is granted to areas

boasting original vegetation, precious kinds of plants and

animals, peat bogs, and rock formations. The valley of the

River Doubrava, with its rock towers and waterfalls, offers

unexpected experiences; the River Sázava, popular among

water sportsmen, fl ows over gigantic granite boulders and

forms numerous rapids. Unique is the Mohelno Serpentite Step, whose geological bedrock

– serpentite – creates conditions that are favourable for the occurrence of rare kinds of plants.

Popular trip destinations are the highest points of the Vysočina Region - Javořice (837 m) and

Devět skal (836 m).

Active Relaxation

Due to its well-preserved landscape, Vysočina’s environment

is among the healthiest in the country. Its extensive dense

forests are alluring for walks as well as mushroom picking, and

charming natural spots offer excellent conditions for active

relaxation and a number of sports. A dense network of 2,700

km of marked hiking trails weaves through the landscape,

providing inimitable experiences to those who love the quiet

of nature. Also, 800 km of marked bike trails allow for getting

to know the most valuable natural places. Those who are more

fi t can choose from more demanding terrain, and families

with children will be pleased by gentler slopes with distant

views. The picturesque countryside can also be admired from

the back of a horse or on board a sight-seeing plane. Climbing

enthusiasts can take advantage of selected sections of the

tallest points of the Žďárské vrchy range. A large number of

lakes provides a place to cool off on hot summer days, as well

as a place to warm up with winter skating. The largest lakes

are a paradise for surfers and yachters, and water reservoirs

are perfect for water sports and fi shing. Towns and cities boast

playgrounds, tennis courts, squash halls, covered pools, as well

as modern outdoor swimming facilities.

A Land of Winter Joy

Vysočina is charming not only in summer, illuminated by

warm rays of sunshine and modelled by all imaginable

shades of green, but also in winter, when icy windstorms

can cover everything around in sparkling white banks

of snow. Winter sport enthusiasts will surely welcome

Vysočina’s perfect conditions for cross-country skiing. The most signifi cant winter resorts

are in the northern part of the Region, which transforms into a large ski paradise in the

winter, with tens of kilometres of cross-country tracks for race as well as recreational

skiers. Downhill skiing enthusiasts will fi nd something for themselves in the region,

with some thirty slopes of various levels of diffi culty, with lifts and artifi cial lighting,

supplemented with artifi cial snow.

The Heritage of the Past

Man has been associated with this region continuously for

centuries. In the deep forests along both sides of the former

border between the Bohemian and Moravian lands, he

built roads and castles to protect them, drained soil, and

founded towns. Previous centuries have left numerous

architectural monuments throughout the region – proud

Gothic castles, dreamy Renaissance chateaus, gorgeous

Baroque monasteries. You will encounter history at your

every step: it is relayed by museum exhibitions as well as

artistic collections in galleries. The castle of Lipnice nad

Sázavou protrudes from a romantic landscape, offering –

aside from a distant view of the surrounding countryside

– summer performances of musicians, theatre performers,

and fencing ensembles. The originally defensive Roštejn

Castle, rebuilt into a Renaissance hunting retreat, offers

mysterious night-time viewings and visitors can peer

into the middle ages during a historical feast. Period

atmosphere can also be enjoyed during the summer

festival at an adapted ruin of Orlík Castle near Humpolec, or in the courtyard of the

Ledeč nad Sázavou Castle. Visitors of the Renaissance chateau in Náměšť nad Oslavou

can admire a precious collection of tapestries as well as the historical fi gures who bring

the chateau to life each summer. The Baroque chateau in Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou,

surrounded with a large park, boasts a rich musical tradition. Precious wall frescoes

and furnishings can be admired by visitors during a viewing of the Premonstratensian

monasteries in Želiv and Nová Říše. The roots of the towns and cities of the region,

which have in their history lived through periods of rapid fl ourishing as well as

destructive wars, extend far into the past. In the middle ages, Jihlava was one of the

richest towns in the Kingdom of Bohemian due to silver mining. It protected its riches by

monumental walls, most of which have survived to the present. A multi-storey labyrinth

of underground corridors can be found under the expansive town square. The town

of Pelhřimov obtained its present Baroque appearance following a destructive fi re in

the 18th century. Surviving from the middle ages are the fortifi cations with two gates,

and the chateau houses museum collections. Havlíčkův Brod was founded on the River

Sázava, on an important trade route. The centre of the town’s historical part comprises

a Baroque square surrounded with gabled houses, with a fountain in the centre.

Seeing UNESCO Sites

The region’s three most signifi cant sets of historical

monuments are part of the world cultural heritage afforded

protection by UNESCO:

The historical centre of Telč, whose square is lined with

burghers’ houses with Renaissance gables and arcaded walkways, together with the

Renaissance chateau, comprises an architectural unit of unique value. The Pilgrimage Church

of St. John of Nepomuck in Zelená hora in Žďár nad Sázavou, as a master composition with

the symbolism of St. John’s fi ve-point star – a masterpiece of the Czech architect of Italian

origin, J. B. Santini, in the early 18th century Baroque-Gothic style. The Romanesque-Gothic

St. Procopius’ Basilica in Třebíč, whose monumental portal and extensive three-nave crypt

make it one of the most precious structures of its kind in Central Europe; and the uniquely

preserved buildings in the Jewish quarter, with two synagogues and an extensive Jewish

cemetery, recall the existence of the local Jewish community.

Specially for Children

A draw for kids is the country and western town Šiklův mlýn

(Šikl’s Mill), as if taken right out of a Wild-West fi lm. You can

visit the saloon, the gambling saloon, or the sheriff’s offi ce;

in summer, you can run into buffalo, Indians, or fur hunters,

see examples of gold panning, or courageous

horseback-riding acts. Nearly in the centre of Jihlava lies a zoological

garden, where children can use an unusual children’s corner

and a petting ZOO, featuring a twelve-meter toboggan.

The South-American pavilion boasts a tropical forest

and the sounds of the jungle, and the African village of

Matongo features original native huts. Pelhřimov is the host

town of the annual International Festival of Records and

Curiosities, during which record holders from all corners of

the world try to have their achievements recorded in the

Guinness Book of Records. The local museum houses over

one hundred exhibits that have come out of the festival.

Vysočina is a lively and friendly region. Its colourful mood has stolen the heart of many

an artist, who paid homage to it in their works. Its voice has inspired generations of folk

musicians as well as giants of world music. The Vysočina Region has its inimitable charm,

which captivates everyone and due to which you will surely want to return to us.

Welcome.
