Acrobatics

Acrobatics is a discipline in gymnastics which focuses on team work, balance, fl ex-ibility and coordination. Acrobatics is highly interactive where boys and girls learn and master skills on their own and with partners. For those who enjoy creativity and move-ment, this is the class for you. NOTE: No shoes are required, only bare feet.

Th is program is designed to teach children basic archery skills and techniques. Qualifi ed Instructors will introduce the fundamental skills of archery in a fun and safe environ-ment. All equipment is supplied.

ART - Elements of Art & Design

Would you like to challenge your children to explore their creativity in a fun and cre-ative environment? Our professional artist/ instructor will introduce your children to the principles and elements of colour and design, while encouraging self-expression and experimentation. Children will build on this knowledge and explore drawing, water-colour and acrylic painting, printmaking, clay & multi-media sculpture. Th ese art fundamentals are essential in developing

observation, spatial skills and co-ordination. Classes will also include visits into the Varley Art Gallery where the kids will be inspired by the masters of Canadian art. At the end of the term, kids will be proud to show off their work in their own in-class Art Show!

All materials provided.

ART - Mixed Media for

Mini Artists

If your child has shown an eye for colour and loves to get his/her hands messy, this is the perfect class to start their artistic journey. Kids will learn about a variety of media: printimaking, pastels, paint and more! It is never too early for your child to explore their creative side, and improve their spatial, observation and self-expression skills. Kids will enjoy interactive tours of the current exhibitions at the Varley Art Gallery and learn and be inspired by original works of art. All materials provided.

ART - Sculpture & Design

Fundamentals

For the intermediate student, kids will take their knowledge of colour and design prin-ciples to the next level. More challenging and designed specifi cally for the curious and tac-tile child, this class will explore the wonderful world of three-dimensional art! Classes will focus on sculpture creation from a variety of media including clay, recyclable mate-rials, paper and everyday objects. Projects emphasize creative thinking and exploration of materials while developing additive and subtractive sculpting techniques, building skills and improvement of co-ordination. All materials provided; there is an additional $10 cost for glazing and kiln-fi ring payable at time of registration.

ART - Start with Art!

Bring your creative geniuses to the Gallery and harness your energy and imagination in a positive and encouraging environment. Children will be introduced to the wonderful world of colour and imagination through drawing, painting and sculpting projects. Focus will be on the fundamentals of art, colour mixing and brushwork.

ART - Valentine’s Day HeARTs

Create unique Valentine gift s and goodies for the special ones in your life! Make your par-ents, siblings or special friends a Valentine’s Day gift from the heart that will knock their socks off ! All materials included; just come inspired and ready to have some fun.

ART - Young Art Masters

Th e perfect way to whet your young ones’ creative appetite. Art allows children to express their ideas and concepts visually, and leads to a balance in development. Children are encouraged to engage in both traditional and non-traditional art projects in a variety of media, and explore their diverse roots and experiences through art. No experience required but come with an open mind! All materials provided.

ART - French PA Day Extravaganza!

A full day of art making in French! Spend your PA Day at an art gallery! Th e Varley Art Gallery exposes students to some of the best artists in Canada through interactive tours and art activities. Our young artists get their inspiration from the artworks on show and spend the day focusing on their own mas-terpieces by participating in full-day mixed media workshops - painting, drawing, and sculpture. All materials included. Please bring a nut-free snack and lunch. Program runs from 9am-4pm; extended care is included from 8-9am and 4-6pm.All mate-rials included.

Badminton

Here is an opportunity to play recreational badminton with your friends. Matches and round robins will be set up for your enjoy-ment. Birds supplied, racquets required.

Badminton Instructional -

Active Start / Beginner

Introduce and promote healthy active living to children through the sport of badminton. Th is instructional program follows the Sport for Life: Canadian Badminton Long-Term Athlete Development Plan. Th e program introduces physical literacy designed to focus on basic motor skills and activities to children by learning to play badminton.

Ballet - Beginner

A basic course covering the technical aspects of ballet, positioning of arms and legs while combining several dance steps. Th e program also provides an opportunity for the develop-ment of grace and creativity.

Basketball

Recreational basketball including a general warm-up, teaching sessions and playing time.

Basketball for Girls

Th is recreational basketball program has been planned for girls to enhance their skills through specifi c drills and game play.

Bollywood

Are your kids ready to get active and playful with dance? Bollysteps introduces kids to a fusion of classical Indian and modern Bollywood movements. Th is class is designed for all levels and abilities allowing children to enjoy the energetic beats of Bollywood while getting fi t & having fun! Students take part in Bollywood choreography and at the end of the session have put together a mini Bollywood dance routine. Guaranteed to help meet the daily recommended 60-minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity.

Bollywood / Hip Hop Dance

Th is program is ideal for children who wish to learn a combination of Bollywood and Hip Hop dancing. Our instructor will lead your children through a variety of dance steps each week with the goal of performing full routines by the end of the session.

Car Modelling

Zoooommm!! Get an opportunity to build a model vehicle! Learn from modeling experts how to put a model together and spray paint your fi nished product. An additional cost of $20 for supplies is payable upon registration.

Chemistry Fun

Explore the awesome world of chemistry with our fun experiments, interesting games, cool science projects, amazing facts and videos, worksheets and more! Have fun learning about science with cool chemistry games. Experiment with solids, liquids and gases; test the melting points of diff erent substances; and enjoy a range of interactive activities that will help you understand the amazing world of chemistry.

Chess

Chess is an excellent way to learn both logical and intuitive thinking skills as well as increasing a child’s attention span. Th e game develops good sportsmanship for handling wins and defeats and it is fun! Participants will learn starting positions, moves, cap-tures, check, checkmate, stalemate and pawn promotion.

Chess & Badminton

Participants will exercise their minds and bodies in this one-of-a-kind program (no

experience required). Our chess & bad-minton specialist will lead instructional drills, exercises, and supervise friendly matches every class.

Chess - Advance

Chess is a great way to develop reasoning and strategic skills, to improve concentration, to strengthen problem-solving skills and to learn sportsmanship. Th is advanced course develops tactics and mastering of chess moves. Pre-requisite: Chess Intermediate

Communication Skills

Eff ective communication includes listening, thinking and speaking. Participants will develop their confi dence in communi-cating with others for a variety of purposes including information sharing, questioning and storytelling.

Computer Animation -

Cartoons

Come unleash your imagination in this program by creating your own animated

cartoon movie. You will be guided step-by-step using your own voice and funny special eff ect sounds in a computerized environ-ment, as you create and watch your cartoon come to life! Th is course develops logical and motor skills, stimulating creativity and self expression. At the end of the program, children will bring home a DVD.

Computers - Keyboarding -

Beginner

Students learn the correct typing technique including the correct fi nger position on the keyboard, typing lower and uppercase letters without looking at the keyboard. In addition to lessons completed in class, students will have access to personalized online accounts for the duration of the course to learn and improve their typing skills at home. Th e typing accounts contain lessons, exercises and exciting typing games tailored to each student’s needs.

Computers - Microsoft Word

Students learn all necessary functions of Microsoft Word required for school proj-ects. Lessons are provided on formatting, graphics, spell-check, page layout, columns, track changes, tables, smartart, hyperlinks, table of contents etc.

Creation Station

Create it, build it, and share it. Children will have the opportunity to use their imagina-tion and create a story through the use of building with LEGO bricks. Participants will take home their creations and share their story with others. Each week a new theme will be introduced and demonstrated on building something new and exciting using a variety of LEGO pieces. Please note that this program is not sponsored by the LEGO

Group. Th ere is a $15 material fee payable to

Creative Minds Workshop

Let your imagination loose while exploring innovative writing/creating opportuni-ties from stories, fairytales, plays, original masterpieces, and poems. Learn the tools

to create, adapt, write, rehearse, perform, and build your creative idea. Th is fun team-building workshop will use critical thinking, hands on creating, communication skills, speech, vocabulary, technology etc, to allow children to create a unique masterpiece for the last class where parents will be invited to watch a presentation. Learning the tools to craft stories strengthens creativity, communication skills, speech and vocabulary. In addition, writing allows children to explore their own feelings and to stretch their imaginations beyond their wildest dreams.

Dance 2 the Beat

Do you love to dance? Th is class will give you a great chance to explore and enjoy a variety of music and dance styles such as jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, musical theatre and more all in one energizing and upbeat class! Participants will perform selected dances at an end-of-the-session dance showcase.

Dance Pl3y

Are your kids ready to get active and playful with dance? DANCEPL3Y is an innovative kids dance/ fi tness program that uses simple movements from a variety of dance styles (Hip Hop, Urban, Ballroom, Bollywood, Lyrical, Jazz/Funk) to explore the elements of dance while developing fundamental

move-ment skills! Our unique 360-degree use of space is paired with creative story lines and playful group formations to create a safe, interactive and engaging class where every kid can develop confi dence through dance. Dodge, Flip & Eat

Join us for a fun program where you will be in the kitchen cooking delicious recipes and tasting what you made. Th en participants will burn it all off in the gym playing a fun game of dodgeball.

Dodgeball

Join us for a very active hour of fun playing dodgeball by the offi cial rules. You will also learn variations of dodgeball such as kings court, corner, and all for one. Th is program is for those who have a lot of energy.

Drawing and Painting – Beginner

A basic course off ering instruction in the dif-ferent categories of drawing using a variety of mediums such as watercolour, pencil, ink and pastels. Participants will spend time on an individual project involving most of the media covered. Materials will be supplied.

Drawing and Painting - Intermediate

For those who have taken a beginners pro-gram and are looking to further their artistic talent.

Drumming

Qualifi ed staff will lead you through basic drumming skills to enable you tp play along with your favourite songs. Drums are provided and we work in a 1 to 4 instructor: student ratio.

Essay Writing for Children

Students progress through the process of report writing, including organization, research, note taking, and paragraph writing to develop a well-structured essay. Ideally suited for students in grades 4 to 6.

Floor Hockey

An opportunity to play recreational sports with other friends. A general warm up, skills session and playing time will be off ered each week. Sticks will be provided. CSA approved hockey helmet is mandatory for all participants.

French Skills

Children in grades 1 and 2 will learn simple instructions in a fun french environment. Children will master pronunciation of the alphabet, basic rules, and simple vocabulary using activities, french songs and story-books. By the end of the program, children will be capable of managing a brief french conversation.

Girls on the Go

From basketball to volleyball to soccer and badminton, this program is for the ener-getically inclined! Tons of sports to keep you active from head to toe!

Gladiator Challenge

Participants will challenge themselves in our Gladiator ring. Games will include fan favou-rites: Target Toss Challenge, Terminator Dodgeball, Powerball and much more.

Glee - Musical Theatre

Th is class combines dancing, singing and acting. Musical numbers from popular shows will be chosen and participants will perform at the end of the session to parents.

Grammar

Th rough language-oriented activities stu-dents will learn how the English language works, while learning parts of speech, punc-tuation and sentence structure. Students will improve their knowledge of language con-ventions to correct errors, refi ne expression and present their work eff ectively.

Guitar Lessons - Beginner

An introductory course off ering the novice instruction in guitar through practice and theory. An acoustic guitar is required by each student.

Guitar Lessons - Intermediate

Assuming your child has knowledge of notes and chords, more advanced techniques will be covered including learning the entire fret-board, fi ngerstyle and picking techniques to play more advanced songs with ear training to transcribe tunes from CD’s. Th eory will cover major and minor scales as well as chord construction. You own guitar is required.

Hands on Robotics Jr.

Hands on Robotics Jr. will immerse young students in the exciting world of robotics and Lego! Using the Lego WeDo education set, students will grasp concepts on building structures, sensors, and gearing. Students will be able to construct robots and watch them come to life as they build simple pro-grams for the robots. Th is course will chal-lenge students to think critically and work in a team to solve problems.

Hip Hop - Level 1

Are you in tune with the latest hip hop moves? Do you want to learn how to dance like some of your favourite hip hop artists? Th is program is designed for children who love to dance!

Home Alone

Th is workshop is designed to prepare chil-dren for the challenges of being home alone. Participants will learn how to deal with phone calls and visitors, handling emergen-cies, safety around the house and how to prepare simple meals and snacks.

Indoor Hockey

Th is program is for boys and girls who like to play hard and have fun. Cosom hockey or fl oor hockey is a game of running and teamwork. Participants will be split into teams and play 45-minute games plus a warm-up. White-soled running shoes and C.S.A. approved helmets with face masks are mandatory.

Indoor Soccer

Th is basic recreational soccer program is designed for both boys and girls interested in the game of soccer. Th e emphasis will be on active, fun soccer related games and activi-ties. Warm up, fi tness training and skills development aspects will be dealt with in a manner appropriate to each group and to the individual children. Shin pads are manda-tory to participate in program. Children must be 6 years old by the start of program.

Jazz Dance - Beginner

Th rough the teaching of basic dance steps and movements, girls and boys will develop simple jazz routines. Th e class is for beginners only.

Kaleidoscope Kids - Discovering

YOUR Strengths

Th is program is designed for kids aged 8-12 who could benefi t from a boost in confi -dence and self-esteem. Led by a registered occupational therapist, children will explore weekly character building using an indi-vidual strength based approach. Each class incorporates physical and creative activities for a balanced approach to wellness. Come in comfy clothes and an open mind!

Karate

Th is program is designed for girls and boys to learn traditional Japanese-style Karate, and achieve self confi dence, discipline, leadership and physical strength. Th e students will learn all areas of kicking, punching, throwing, and sparring. Work towards belt training: details in class.

Karate - Children/Pre Teen

Karate and Jiu-jitsu is a realistic and eff ective form of defense, discipline and self-esteem. Th is introductory karate class incor-porates kata, punches, blocks and throws.

Kids in the Kitchen

Children will enjoy cooking and eating a variety of fun recipes. We have partnered with York Region Public Health to provide a healthy program. Basic cooking skills, kitchen safety and fun will be emphasized. A $2.00 extra food fee is payable to the instructor at each class.

Kids Love Lego

A creative fun program where kids can learn to build items using Lego. Participants will be challenged to create their own model using balance, stability, mechanics and colour. Each week a new theme will be introduced and demonstrated on building something new and exciting using a variety of Lego pieces. Experienced staff will lead the pro-gram and work with the participants using teamwork, creativity and problem-solving techniques. Th ere is a $10.00 material fee pay-able to the course instructor on the fi rst class. Please note that this program is not sponsored by the LEGO Group.

Kids Love Lego - Advanced

Th is Lego program is geared to children and youth who have experience in working with Lego and want to further develop their building skills. Th e introductory course is recommended prior to taking this advanced course.

Knitting & Crochet

In this course students will learn basic knit-ting and crochet. Students will learn how to use a crochet hook and knitting needle. Class projects including learning how to make a scarf, hat and place mat.

Learn to Play Pickleball

Lego Mindstorm NXT - Hands-on

Robotics

Hands-on robotics will immerse students in the exciting world of robotics. Using Lego Mindstorms NXT, students will grasp concepts on building structures and gearing. At the end of the program, students will have built at least six robots. Th ey will be very familiar with how to build a solid robot, understand how the diff erent sensors work, and how to tweak the robot so that it is suit-able for the current environment: whether it is navigating a path, throwing a ball, or avoiding obstacles. Th is program will chal-lenge students to think critically and work in a team in solving problems.

Let’s Invent with Makey Makey

Th ink outside the box. Whether you child is creative or scientifi c, this program will allow children to learn about computational thinking and interactive design through a fi rst introduction to the Makey Makey printed circuit board. Children will invent and turn everyday objects such as fruit, plant, pasta, Playdoh into keyboards, musical instruments, game controllers, etc.

Little Gamers

GAME ON! Participants will enjoy gaming on our Wii U, Playstation and XBOX sys-tems. Weekly gaming tournaments will be the highlight of the program.

Little Ninja’s

Th is program focuses on the basic compo-nents of karate techniques, building strong fundamentals like balance, focus, kicks, blocking techniques, and gross motor skills.

Little Picasso’s

Your budding Little Picasso will learn all about the fundamentals of drawing and painting in this program. Several diff erent artistic styles will be explored. PARENTS DO NOT PARTICIPATE

Lyrical / Contemporary Dance

Lyrical / Contemporary Dance combines the elegance of ballet with the intensity of jazz and contemporary dance. Th e performer interprets and conveys the lyrics and emo-tion of the music through dance with the goal of developing grace, expression and fl u-idity. Students should have some jazz/ballet background prior to enrolling in this class. Classes will begin with a warm-up to stretch your muscles, centre fl oor work to strengthen technique ability and work toward leaps and turns across the fl oor.

Magic

Learn advanced moves, misdirection, palming and professional techniques. Whether you wish to learn to do card fl our-ishes, vanish cards, or make cards appear out of the air, this program will keep you amazed.

Th is exciting program will teach you the tricks of the trade and learn the various types of modeling. You will learn how to pose, walk on the runway, proper make-up application, healthy eating and simple exercises.

Museum - Clay Creations

Join us as we explore the wonderful world of clay in our NEW pottery studio! Beginners will learn all the steps from beginning to end of how pottery pieces are created. Children will explore methods of hand building such as sculpting, surface decoration, slab building and coiling. Together with our professional artist instructors, participants will also get to glaze their work before being fi red and have an opportunity to try basic techniques on the potter’s wheel. Private Tennis Lessons

Tennis coaches are assisgned to lessons. Players are unable to book or reserve specifi c instructors for their lessons.

Public Speaking for Children

Public speaking is one of people’s greatest fears yet the ability to communicate well is an important life skill. Th rough non-threatening oral language and drama activi-ties, children will develop self-confi dence in their speaking skills and learn strategies for dealing with nervousness in order to become eff ective communicators.

Reading Skills

Th rough guided activities, children will develop strategies for reading comprehen-sion. Th ey will learn to select strategies appropriate for diff erent reading activities such as reading for information,reading for entertainment, or reading for quick answers, and they will be engaged to enjoy the written language in all its varieties.

Rhythmic Gymnastics

Learn the graceful art of rhythmic gymnas-tics. Th is program provides an introduction to rope and ribbon in combination with free dance movement to music.

Robo-gals - Girls Only

For girls only, this hands-on robotics pro-gram will immerse students in the exciting world of robotics. Using Lego Mindstorms NXT, students will grasp concepts on building structures and gearing. At the end of the course, students would have built at least six robots. Th ey will be very familiar with how to build a solid robot, understand how the diff erent sensors work, and how to tweak the robot so that it is suitable for the current environment: whether it is navigating a path, throwing a ball, or avoiding obstacles.

Robots and Remote Controls

Interact with a variety of real life robots, remote control toys and other unique mechanical creations. Participants will also be introduced to programming to make robots perform a series of tasks.

Rock Climbing

Are your kids climbing the walls? Send them to Armadale for fun and excitement on our climbing wall. Trained instructors will teach participants the skills of rock climbing through trust activities, bouldering and climbing. All equipment is provided.

Science Wiz Exploration

Skipping for Kids

You’ll love the amazing sport of rope jumping, and learn new skills/games in each class. Th e fi tness benefi ts to jumping rope are incredible, not to mention all the fun you’ll be having with your friends!

Speed Math

Th is program enhance your child’s cal-culating and numbering skills. Will also develop the child’s right brain, activate their wisdom and intelligence, lengthens their attention span, stimulates their strive excellence, improves memorizing ability, promotes self-confi dence, develops creativity and enforces discipline.

Speed Math - Advanced

Th is program will enhance your child’s already outstanding calculating and num-bering skills. Will continue to develop the child’s right brain, activate their wisdom and intelligence, and lengthen their attention span. Th is program is a continuation of the fi rst level of Speed Math. Please speak with the current instructor to ensure this level is appro-priate for your child.

Sports Club

Th is club off ers a great opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy recreational sports with the guidance of an Instructor. Participants will play a variety of sports including basketball, soccer and badminton.

Sports with Dad

Hey Dad! Bring your child to a jam-packed 90 minutes of sports, games and fun. You will play soccer, fl oor hockey, basketball and much more while bonding with your child.

Table Tennis

A recreational program playing table tennis with your friends. Matches, round robins and basic instruction will be provided. Bring your own table tennis bats.

Taekwondo

Th e most practiced martial art world-wide. Th e art of Taekwondo is guided by the principles of self-respect, respect for others and non-violence. Taekwondo students are trained in the physical aspects of the art, and will learn to develop self-control, courtesy, integrity, perseverance and an indomitable spirit.

Taekwondo - Intermediate

For those who have taken our beginners program and wishes to further develop their skill level.

Tennis

Th is basic recreational tennis program is designed for both boys and girls interested in the game of tennis. Progressive Tennis is the teaching method used at the Angus Glen Tennis Centre and is used as a development tool to allow children to improve their overall tennis skills faster so they can transition to the regular court with more ease. Half-court tennis is the fi rst step in progressive tennis. Th e successful transition full-court tennis will require development in basic coordina-tion. We use cooperative activities which lead to the development of basic strokes and fundamentals.

Children’s Programs

Tennis - Level 2

Ideal for those who have taken indoor tennis lessons previously. Th e class will focus on adjusting to technical and practical play. Participants will learn weight distribution, proper footwork and stroke fundamental including the forehand, backhand, serve and volley. Players will learn how to put spin on the ball,to judge where the ball is going,how to direct strokes with moderate success and sustain a rally from 3/4 of the court. A tennis racquet and proper footwear are required. Th is class is geared to participants who cur-rently play tennis.

Try It: Water Polo - P.A. Day Fun

No experience necessary to try out this fun

and exciting sport. Participants will have the

chance to play water polo in the shallow end of the Milliken Mills pool. Led by coaches and supervised by lifeguards, this program will be sure to set your child in motion!

Violin Lessons - Beginner

Every child can learn the violin! Th is pro-gram is based on the principles of Suzuki, taking a holistic approach to music-making that involves an active mind and healthy body. Children will be taught persistence, listening, observing and repeating while playing the violin. Participants must bring their own violin.

Volleyball for Children

Join us for a night of recreational fun. If you are a beginner, please join us and we will teach you a few volleyball techniques.

What’s that Racquet?..

What’s that racquet???..It’s the participants learning the fundamentals and game play of all our favourite racquet sports. Sports will include table tennis, indoor tennis, bad-minton and pickleball.

Writing Skills

Th rough language-oriented activities, stu-dents will learn how the English language works and how to express their thoughts in writing. Students will explore diff erent writing formats including essays, narra-tives and persuasive writing and learn how to organize ideas when communicating in writing.

Yoga for Kids

Yoga poses with movement, music and laughter will help children to build fl exible and healthy bodies, increase concentra-tion, build confi dence and fi nd their own creativity.
