OUTSIDE SECRETS PART 2

As recorded by Derryl Gabel

Transcribed by Derryl Gabel Music by Derryl Gabel

Arranged by Derryl Gabel Performance Notes

Outside Secrets Part 2

Ex 1 is approaching a note from a half step below. By doing this it gives the phrasing a more vocal quality and feel. Ex 2 is approaching a note from a half step above.

Ex 3 is approaching the note from above then below.

Ex 4 is approaching the note from a half step above then below and sliding into the note.

Ex 5 is approaching the note from a half step above then a whole step below and sliding into the note from a half step. Ex 6 is using ex 4 and 5 consecutively to embelish a major diad.

Ex 7 is approaching a note from a whole step above, a half step below and sliding into from a half step above. Ex 8 is a G7 arppeggio using concepts covered earlier. Notice the two consecutive half steps in the last beat. Ex 9 using a passing tone to connect the whole step descending.

Ex 10 using a passing tone to connect the whole step ascending. Ex 11 using a passing tone to introduce a half step movement.

Ex 12 - 18 second inversion arpeggios ending in 2 consecutive half steps ascending. Ex 19 - 25 third inversion arpeggios ending in 2 consecutive half steps descending. Ex 26 is similar to ex 9 but starts out with an approach from a half step below.

Ex 27 and 28 expands on ex 14. Anywhere two adjacent whole steps are you can use this idea. Ex 29 is another idea you can use where two adjacent whole steps reside.

Ex 30 uses the same idea in context of a D minor blues lick.

Ex 31 is another way to use encloser. This starts with a chromaticism to connect the two whole steps and then approaches the taget note from a whole step below.

Ex 32 is the same phrases just used up a diatonic 4th.

Ex 33 is similar but approaches the target tone from a half step below. Ex 34 uses the idea in a longer musical phrase.

Ex 35 uses ex 31 in a longer musical phrase.

Ex 36 approaches an A minor diad with a diad a half step above. Ex 37 uses ex 36 in a longer musical phrase.

Ex 38 approaches an A minor diad with descending diads starting a whole step above. Ex 39 uses ex 38 in a longer musical phrase.

Ex 40 ascendes a diminished hybrid and descends using a six note sequence whith in the diminished scale and ends chromatically. Ex 41 ascendes a diminished hybrid and descends using a six note sequence that ustilizes encloser and ends chromatically. Ex 42 - 50 are lines that utilize most of the concepts covered thus far.
