PPC PROGRAMME FOR LANDFILL SITES

In December 2003 the Environment and Heritage Service began the implementation of the Landfill

Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003 in accordance with the Pollution Prevention and Control

(PPC) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2003

The implementation programme resulted in the submission of a site conditioning plan from

licensed landfill operators. The review of the plans identified a number of sites which had the ability

to meet the requirements of the EU Landfill Directive 1999 and those sites which could not.

From the 31

March 2007 a number of Landfill Sites are now closed under the Landfill Regulations

2003 these are listed in Table 1 and a number of sites continue to operate under the current Waste

Management license due to the submission of a PPC application these are listed in Table 2.

Currently there are only 10 permitted Landfill sites in Northern Ireland these are outlined in Table

3. A number of sites applied for a PPC permit but have been refused, these sites can continue

operating under their waste management licence, these sites are outlined in Table 4.

The following landfill sites are now closed and can not accept waste for disposal. However

these sites may accept inert wastes for site restoration purposes only under their waste

management licence, following approval from EHS.
