Introduction

Archive Manager OWA support enables the users to access their archived emails over the Internet easily and without modifying any settings.

If you plan to access and retrieve archived emails over the web, the Microsoft Exchange Server Extensions of Archive Manager have to be installed on your MS Exchange Server.

How to use this document

This document has been created to troubleshoot problems you may be experiencing when accessing archived emails using OWA. Start with checking your OWA settings. If the problem still persists, consult the documented problem solutions or FAQs. Report the most complicated issues to our highly experienced support team

Prerequisite knowledge

Working knowledge of Microsoft Exchange Server 2010/2007/2003/2000, OWA and IIS is required.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Archive Manager Exchange Edition is a new product name for PAM4Exchange since version 5.0. As cases/questions in this Troubleshooting guide are being collected continually throughout all product versions, we have preserved also the PAM4Exchange product name in some cases.

How to report errors

To better identify your OWA problem and report it to support, please follow the next steps:

 Download the DebugViewer application to the client computer

(http://download.sysinternals.com/Files/DebugView.zip). Unzip it and start the DbgView.exe application.

 Create the registry key on the client computer:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Heilig &

Schubert\PAM-Storage3\PamExchange\DebugLevel (REG_DWORD) and set it's value to 3.

 Perform the action, which is failing

 Save the output from the DbgView application and send it to www.metalogix.com/Support

Check your OWA Settings

After installing the Archive Manager OWA extension on the MS Exchange Server, as described in the Archive Manager Exchange Edition Installation of Optional Features guide you can test the installation by entering the following URL addresses into your internet browser:

http://<EXCHANGESERVER>/exchange or

http://<ArchiveManagerServer>/exchangePamOWANet

NOTE: <EXCHANGESERVER> denotes the name of your MS Exchange Sever and <ArchiveManagerServer> denotes the name of your Archive Manager Server.

In both cases an authentication window pops up before the URL is loaded:

Please type in the authentication parameters for one user to open his/her mailbox via OWA.

The first URL will launch the typical Outlook Web Access. The entire functionality of MS Outlook client should be available over OWA as well.

(6)

Manage, Migrate, Archive, Store, Protect

www.metalogix.com/Support sales@metalogix.net Metalogix Software 6 / 36 The second URL will launch the OWA together with the Archive and Restore functionalities available for the users that have the Archive Manager Client AddIn for MS Outlook installed.

The Archive and Restore functionality is active only if the Addin right (either global or specific) was assigned in Enterprise Manager on the Settings tab.

(7)

www.metalogix.com/Support sales@metalogix.net Metalogix Software 7 / 36 NOTE: An archived email will always have its attachment displayed in the OWA

preview frame as a link only. When an archived email is retrieved, its attachments are displayed with their original name and extension.

Setting the permission for IIS Virtual Directories

However, if you encounter errors while testing the OWA support installation, such as access denied or attachment displaying disability, you need to check if the IIS Virtual directories permissions have been set correctly.

To open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, click the Start button and follow the path Programs/Administrative Tools/Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.

The Default Web Site directory in the Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager window should have the following structure:

There is one virtual directory you need to set the permissions on:

Permissions over the Exchange\exchangePAMOWANet virtual directory

Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager (click the Start button and follow the path Programs/Administrative Tools/Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager). The Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager window opens. Expand the Default Web Site tree.

Expand the Exchange virtual directory, right-click the exchangePAMOWANet subdirectory, and select Properties to open the Properties window.

On the Virtual Directory tab make sure that your settings are similar with the ones depicted on the following screen:

Generating HTML links for archived

attachments

The Archive Manager Exchange Edition archiving processes replace the emails on MS Exchange with shortcuts that include the header and the body of the archived email. Therefore, the Outlook Preview is able to display the archived items too, the Attachments field being left empty as default. The attachment is included in the message, after the email is retrieved by double-click from the archive. If the Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) is used to retrieve archived emails the only thing that will be retrieved is what is placed on MS Exchange. The attachments will be replaced here with a fake LINK.

There are two ways of replacing this fake link with the correct attachment.

A. The first method needs the OWA support from Archive Manager being installed on the MS Exchange Server.

This Archive Manager component can be selected from the setup wizard when running it on the MS Exchange 2000/2003.

NOTE: In case of Exchange 2007 and 2010 the required components are installed by the Archive Manager Exchange Edition 64bit Extension setup.

(13)

Manage, Migrate, Archive, Store, Protect

www.metalogix.com/Support sales@metalogix.net Metalogix Software 13 / 36 Usually only the Microsoft Exchange Server Extensions (components of the Archive Manager setup) need to run directly on MS Exchange. We recommend the other components of Archive Manager to be installed on another computer.

When installing the OWA support from Archive Manager, select the OWA component from the setup wizard:

Furthermore, the OWA support needs to be configured with the OWANetinstaller.exe tool exactly as described in the Archive Manager Exchange Edition Installation of Optional features guide.

Afterwards, an archived email retrieved via OWA will display the attachment, exactly like the other non archived emails:

(14)

Manage, Migrate, Archive, Store, Protect

www.metalogix.com/Support sales@metalogix.net Metalogix Software 14 / 36 B. The second method of reaching the attachment of one archived email is to start generating an

HTML link in the Attachment field of the email. This HTML link will bear the name of the attachment and it will be available in the MS Outlook preview, in the OWA preview and in the email retrieved via OWA as well:

(15)

Manage, Migrate, Archive, Store, Protect

www.metalogix.com/Support sales@metalogix.net Metalogix Software 15 / 36 By being clicked, the HTML link will load an Internet Explorer window and the attachment will be downloaded from the Archive Manager server.

This second method does not require any configuration to be done or Archive Manager component to be installed on the MS Exchange server itself.

To turn the HTML-based link generating on, in the Enterprise Manager on the Tools / Options / Archive settings / links tab check the Always generate attachment links check box. In the Alias for attachment link URL enter the alias of your Archive Manager Archive server - the link generator server name. The ALIAS of your Archive server can be accessed both from inside and outside the LAN.

NOTE: We recommend creating an ALIAS (DNS alias) for the Archive Manager Archive server. It will serve as a virtual name and changing the physical name of the Archive server will not affect the attachment links.

If the https channel will be used, check the use SSL check box.

FAQ

Supported browsers for Archive Manager OWA

Q: Are there any download, applets, or browser plug-ins required for OWA?

A: OWA installation for Archive Manager Exchange Edition does not require any downloads or applets for the product's supported browsers, i.e. for IE 5 (or higher) and Mozilla.

OWA support setup required only on MS Exchange Server

Q: Are there known issues with placing this application on the same server as another application? A: For OWA support, a small part of Archive Manager Exchange Edition must be installed on the Exchange Server. The same thing applies for the automatic

archiving of e-mails on arrival (DirectArchive).

“Access denied” for OWA on Windows 2000 Domain Controller with SP4

Q: I get "access denied" while trying to open OWA, however I have set all the permissions needed. What can I do?

A: To work around the problem, manually assign Impersonate a client after authentication to the IWAM account. To do so, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Domain Controller Security Policy.

2. Click Security Settings.

3. Click Local Policies, and then click User Rights Assignment.

4. In the right pane, double-click Impersonate a client after authentication. 5. In the Security Policy Setting window, click Define these policy settings. 6. Click Add, and then click Browse.

7. In the Select Users or Groups window, select the IWAM account name, click Add, and then click OK.

8. Click OK, and then click OK again.

9. To enforce an update of computer policy, type the following command: secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy /enforce

10. At a command prompt, type iisreset. Details are published under the following link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/824308/

Server Application unavailable for OWA 2003

Q: I get "Server Application unavailable" while trying to open OWA 2003. What can I do?

A: You will need to re-register ASP.net with -i and -r parameters. To do so, just go to Start > Run. Type in cmd and press ENTER.

Then type in command line:

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspn et_regiis.exe -i C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspn et_regiis.exe -r

Logon window after doubleclicking on a mail in OWA

Q: I can see the archived mails in preview pane. But after double-clicking on any of them, I get a logon window. If I log on as a Domain Admin, the mail is visible, the attachment as well. In the case I try to log on as a normal user, nothing happens.

A: Please go to MS Exchange Server and open the IIS.

Then Web Sites\Default Web Site\Exchange\ExchangePAMOWANet.

Right-click on it and select properties. Then on Virtual Directory tab please select configuration.

The configuration displays the filters installed on the virtual directory. All filters must be removed from this virtual directory (usually called davex.dll).

Attachment appears just as a link

Q: I have noticed that if the email is archived for POP3 Clients, attachments appear as a link.dat file. How do I do to change that?

A: There is the possibility to generate a HTML-based link that will target to the archived attachment on MS Exchange. The shortcut that the archive email hold on MS Exchange will contain this HTML link to the attachment. To turn this feature on, please consult the “Generating HTML links for archived attachments” part of this document.

HTML link generation problem - attachment do not retrieve

Q: I followed the steps in the "Generating HTML links for archived attachments" to set up the HTML links. The links now show up in the archived mail. However, when I try to open the link it just comes up as a blank web page.

A: There is a web.config file under

<INSTALLDIR>\Metalogix\MAM4Exchange\Web\exchangePAMWS folder. Just edit this file and make sure that it contains the following key:

<add key="SaveDir" value=""/>

This key must point to a valid path, for example: <add key="SaveDir" value="C:\Temp"/>

(19)

Manage, Migrate, Archive, Store, Protect

www.metalogix.com/Support sales@metalogix.net Metalogix Software 19 / 36 Furthermore the NETWORK SERVICE local user has to have the modify permissions on this folder.

Important Note: If Windows 2003 with SP1 or SP2 is used as operation system for the Archive Manager server, then make sure the NETWORK SERVICE has local Access, Launch and Activation permissions:in DCOM on the Archive Manager server, too. Without these rights on Win2k3 + SP1 or SP2 the user will have a permission deny when trying to retrieve the attachment via the URL.

Logon error when opening email in OWA 2003

Q: When trying to open an archived email in OWA 2003, instead of getting the email from archive, the following message appears:

You could not be logged on to Outlook web Access. Make sure your domain\user name and password are correct, and then try again.

A: If this is happening from outside, there might be ISA server blocking our application. If occurring internally, check the authentication options of ExchangePamOWANet virtual directory.

First check the settings of the upper level – Exchange. In the IIS Manager, under Default Web site, locate the Exchange virtual directory. In its Properties window on the Directory Security tab click Edit in Authentication and Access control section. These are settings for OWA itself:

(20)

Manage, Migrate, Archive, Store, Protect

www.metalogix.com/Support sales@metalogix.net Metalogix Software 20 / 36 These settings need to be inherited also to lower level – our ExchangePamOwaNet component. Then select the Integrated Windows authentication as well as Basic authentication check-boxes:

Empty window and “Access denied” when opening email in OWA

Q: When I open an email in OWA I get just window with an empty header and no text. When I try to browse the

http://<ArchiveManagerServer>/FULTEXTFromHSM/GetFileFromHSM.aspx the Access denied error is displayed.

A:

1. On Archive Manager server create new Application Pool in IIS called

PamAppsPool (right-click Application Pools node/ select New /Application pool)

2. Open its Properties. On the Identity tab use the super-user account.

3. Under the Default Web Site in IIS in the Properties of ExchangePAMWS and FULLTEXTFromHSM (you can also do it for ArchiveWeb) on the Virtual

Directory tab change the DefaultAppPool to the PamAppsPool from the down-drop menu.

In this way they will run under the super-user not under the Network Services which gives you the “Access denied” when you try to browse their web pages.

4. In the Windows Task Manager end the w3wwp.exe processes and try to open email in OWA again.

A: Try to Restart the StoreServices (PMstoreSv) in services. If you still get the error follow the next steps:

Please modify the ExchangePamOWANet Web.config file under C:\Program Files\Metalogix\PAM4Exchange\Web\exchangePAMOWANet folder: change the <identity impersonate> value from "true" to "false" (see the following section). Then follow these steps:

1. run FULLTEXTFROMHSM (browsing FulltextFromHSM threw error) in PamAppPool, with super-user as launching user, ExchangePamOwaNet as well.

2. Set DCOM rights for DistributedCOMUsers: srv, IWAM, IUSR according to the Full Install Guide, for additional NETWORK SERVICE set only local

permissions (no remote ones). 3. Restart PamAppPool.

Also locate the temp folder (should be C:\Program Files\PAM\Web\OWACache). Check the permissions on this folder. Probably NETWORK SERVICE will need write permissions on the OWACache folder.

Impersonate key in the web.config for exchangePAMOWANET

Q: After configuring the OWA for Archive Manager on my MS Exchange server I was receiving an error in the header of the email when an archived item was retrieved over Outlook Web Access.

To fix that I had to change this key: <identity impersonate="true"/>

from the web.config file from <install drive> \ Metalogix \ MAM4Exchange \ Web \ exchangePAMOWANET on my MS Exchange server to value false.

(28)

Manage, Migrate, Archive, Store, Protect

www.metalogix.com/Support sales@metalogix.net Metalogix Software 28 / 36 A: In the case your MS Exchange server runs on a Windows 2000 platform, then when configuring the OWA extensions on it for Archive Manager, you will need to set the identity impersonate key in the web.config file to the vaule true.

In such situations, when IIS5 is used, the ASP.NET is running under the ASPNET account.

So when IIS5 is used, the value of the identity impersonate must be true because it is then taken from the machine.config file.

On a Windows 2003 platform IIS6 the Exchange website is running under the local system account.

In such cases the identity impersonate key must be set in the web.config to value false.

Comment: the web.config file can be found on your MS Exchange server in the <install drive>\Metalogix\MAM4Exchange\Web\exchangePAMOWANET folder.

If you get an error from .NET Framework while browsing this, it means you will have to review the DCOM settings for Win2k3+SP1 on your Archive Manager server - probably the NETWORK SERVICES hasn't been granted the rights.

Follow the steps in our Installation Guide to set the correct DCOM rights on your Archive Manager server:

NOTE: Since Archive Manager version 4.0, .Net Framework 2.0 SP2 is necessary. If your MS Exchange Server is running on a Win2k3 OS, we would suggest also editing the C:\Program Files \ Metalogix \ MAM4Exchange \ Web \

If all the above prove not to help, then it means that the problem is actually in your IIS on the MS Exchange Server.

OWA Webforms registration – access denied

Q: I am not able to publish OWA web forms via GUI.

I cannot get list of system mailboxes or I get access denied in debug. Is there any workaround?

A: First of all try this workaround:

Run installation setup again, choose option Update\repair, but install it under local administrator not as super-user.

Try again to publish web forms via GUI: C:\ Program Files \ Metalogix \ MAM4Exchange \ Tools \ OWA \ OWANETInstaller.exe

If you will get some progress and you will be able to publish web forms, make sure you will run Update\repair again and choose super-user instead of administrator. After all it must run under super-user.

Once you have successfully published forms, even under another account you do not have to run wizard again.

Second Workaround

Manual web forms registration using script.

If previous workaround didn’t help, try to use script for publishing OWA web forms available on the forum.

http://forum.metalogix.com/showthread.php?p=4361#post4361 (Change extension of .txt file to .vbs and run it on Exchange server.)

SystemMailbox{YOUR_SYSTEM_MAILBOX_GUID}@yourdomain .com) The email address should always work.

The 2 scripts are the same except the line:

sMsgHandlerPath = "http://" & sServerName & "/exchange/exchangePAMOwaNet/ExPamMessage2k3.aspx"

For Exchange 2000 it must point to ExPamMessage2k.aspx; for Exchange 2003 it must point to ExPamMessage2k3.aspx.

If you have more System mailboxes(SM) on backend (or more backends) you will have to run the script for all of them.

If you need to gather SM, use the "find" option in Active directory, from where you can also use properties of the chosen SM Copy\paste an alias or an email address and easily use it in the script.

SM is also visible in System manager, but from there you cannot copy\paste, so better is to use Active Directory.

In System manager you can at least see which SM belongs to which Information store.

Once you publish web forms for particular SM, all users in the same info store as this SM will be able to retrieve files correctly in OWA. So if you would like to make it work for other users as well, make sure you use correct SM from correct Information store. You do not have to publish web forms for Frontend SM, backend is enough.

For Exchange cluster environment you just need to run script from any of the nodes, but use the Cluster Name in the script please

If publishing from one of the nodes won't work try it from another one. Type of the errors during executing script:

- Access denied = you are logged on as not powerful user, try another

- Object or data matching the name, range, or selection criteria was not found within the scope of this operation; Source: Provider = wrong server name or System mailbox in the script

OWA Web Forms can’t be registered (using the OWANetInstaller)

Q: I can’t register Web forms when configuring OWA.

A: If the registration of Web Forms fails, you have to check the following:

 if the Exchange Server is in a subdomain (testing.domain.com), but the e-mail addresses are in format of the parent domain (@domain.com) you have to specify the e-mail address of the SystemMailbox. To do this, edit the template – add the e-mail address portion after the SystemMailbox{GUID}.

 If the “Check” function returns an empty messagebox, check the debug output. If the error message is “Object or data matching the name, range, or selection criteria was not found within the scope of this operation” then you have to check the template URL. If the template URL can be opened in IE, then you have to check the IIS settings. Navigate to the “exchange” virtual directory, open its Properties and on the Virtual Directory tab check whether the “PATH” of the virtual directory is valid. If the path is not valid, IIS manager reminds you with a messagebox. The correct format should be like this: \\.\BackofficeStorage\yourdomain.com\MBX.

Web Forms for the Private Info Store can't be registered

Q: I am trying to configure my OWA to retrieve the archived emails. I have been following the

documentation closely and now I am at the point of registering the WEB forms. Unfortunately if I click the Advanced button in order to register the forms for the Private Information Store I get nothing in that window. All the buttons are greyed out.

I have attached a screenshot of it.

Registering the forms in the Public Info store works fine. What do I need to do to fix the Private Info store Web Forms registration?

www.metalogix.com/Support sales@metalogix.net Metalogix Software 35 / 36 A: If the window is white, it means that the super-user has a permission denyand can't read the System Mailboxes from Exchange.

To solve this issue temporary enhance the super-user with the following 2 rights: - Domain Administrator rights

- local administrator rights on the MS Exchange server

Then open the Component Services console on the MS Exchange Server and add a system application administrator role to the super-user:

Component Services/Computers/My Computer/System Application/Roles/Administrator/Users

(add here the super-user account as pictured in the attached screenshot) Notes:

 you will have to log off and log in again to the MS Exchange server with the super-user account and then try again to register the Web Forms in the Private Info Store

 IMPORTANT: after the publishing succeeded, please take away the super-user account from the Domain Admins group and from the Local
