Barco’s role in the GreenElec project

 Contribute to build components inventory by

providing Full Material Declarations for PCBAs

 Discussing possible improvements in:

▫ PCBA design: interfaces, connections, components with

higher recyclability

▫ Product: mechanics, connections, ease of disassembly

Barco’s ECO office: aims and services

Set up in 2010 Objectives:

 To support the Barco

community in ensuring all Barco products are

compliant with worldwide current and future

requirements.

 To drive the integration of

sustainable development

principles into Barco

products and processes.

Handling customer requests related to environmental compliance,

ecodesign, energy efficiency and recyclability

Issuing certificates of compliance for environmental standards such as RoHS, REACH and

WEEE Directives

Reporting the compliance status of our Bills of Materials during the NPI

process

ECO monitoring: Barco Supplier Sustainability

Programme

• more than 1200 Barco suppliers have been requested to proof their commitment to environmental compliance by sending and exchanging information about the chemical composition of their products.

commitment

• Barco has provided its suppliers with educational material explaining what are the obligations set by international environmental standards

training

• As part of its proactive approach to environmental compliance, Barco is following the international trend to opt for encouraging suppliers to provide a Full Material Disclosure

ECO monitoring: our data collection activities

HOW: We collect material information from every

supplier for every product part

WHO: We do not do this alone. This is done by

GreenSoft, US company based in California with a data factory in China and offices around the world. Our sourcing department helps us to solve

escalations.

WHY: To achieve compliance we need to know

(10)

ECO monitoring: GreenSoft Technology

▫ US company founded in 2002 ▫ Specialized in providing

environmental compliance content management tools

▫ GreenSoft collects data and has

developed software to manage and report on data

▫ ISO 9001 certified

▫ Main customers: Thales, Texas

Instruments, etc.

ECO monitoring: full material declarations

 We ask our suppliers primarily for Full Material

Declarations: Why?

▫ FMD is not a legal requirement but is an element of a tactical

approach to compliance management

▫ This allows us to de-risk our products against future regulations ▫ This allows us to de-risk products already during the NPI process ▫ This allows us to answer customer surveys / customer requests ▫ This helps us to conduct LCA studies more accurately

▫ This allows us to locate industry-restricted materials in our

products and to seek for alternatives (Plasticizers, flame retardants

▫ This allows us to have an indication of the recycling value or

(15)

ECO monitoring: Tool

▫ We use the “GreenData Manager” tool (9K USD -> 57K USD) - Includes all data from suppliers

- We can issue reports against ROHS,REACH and any other substance list (also customer-tailored)

- We can search for a substance across all our BOMs

- No link to our ErP system yet. Tool has limited access.

- COST OF THE ASSESSMENT: 10-5 USD * part (volume dependant)

ECO monitoring: data collection for PCBAs

PCBAs:

Barco collects data for all standard parts in

the BOM

EMSs give info for soldering paste and

process

EMSs give info about PCB manufacturer

ECO contacts PCB manufacturer for data

ECO monitoring: data collection for mechanical parts

Mechanical Parts

New process established with involvement of

mechanics working group within Barco

- ECO gets list of parts from ProEngineer tool

- List contains weight and material for parts

- GreenSoft checks list of surface treatments

Conflict Minerals

 In 2011 Barco starts investigation in the supply

chain on conflict minerals (gold, tin, tantalum, tungsten)

 More than 200 suppliers investigated, 80% of

response

 Use of EICC forms – 1635 smelters identified and

reported

(22)

Results of our assessment 2013

 Total parts in database:

 Total FMDs:

 Total CoCs:

 For which parts we do

not get FMD

 Average duration of

assessment for one display  34327  19004  8438  Mechanics, plastics, PCBs  Beginning: 6-12 months  After 3 yrs of assessment: 3-4 months

(23)

Data for Greenelec PBA

 Total parts for PBA

 Total FMDs

 For which parts we do

not get FMD

 790 components+PCB

 779

 11 components+PCB

▫ Resettable fuse, ferrite

(24)

Issues encountered

 Suppliers not ready to collect and share information

 Very difficult to get material declarations for plastic

parts due to confidentiality and IP reasons

 Collecting data requires infrastructure and

resources: tools and people to collect, interpret, validate and maintain information

 The industry lacks a common standard/way to

share environmental information

 Concept of full material declarations difficult to

accept by manufacturers as it is not mandatory by law

 Internal Change Management
