From The President

Welcome to Summer Term at SUSCC!

Summer Term offers an excellent

opportunity for first-time college

students or high school students to get

a jump-start on their college career.

This summer we are offering

mini-terms, which will allow students to get

the same quality instruction and same

amount of credits, just in a shorter time

span. We also have several online

courses that are available this summer. These options are just a few

ways SUSCC is working to make our students’ experience a

positive one. Enjoy your summer and thank you for choosing

Southern Union.

Best wishes,

the parent institution may be admitted to SUSCC as a transient student. Transient students who have submitted their

applica-tion for admission and an approved transient form in advance, may register online during the registraapplica-tion period. Transient

students may also bring a copy of their transient form and register in person.

New Student Orientation:

ORI 101

- This course is designed to introduce the beginning student to college life. The

course provides an introduction to programs, personnel and policies at the college level as well as addresses student success

strategies and goal setting. The student orientation instructor will become their academic advisor who they will be required

to meet with during the semester.

ORI 107

, Student Success Skills (for healthcare students). ORI 107 is a 1 credit

hour course required for first semester college freshmen who plan to pursue a healthcare program at Southern

Union. It is designed to provide future health sciences students the information needed to improve their success

in a college environment with an emphasis on success in healthcare programs. Specific topics include test taking

skills, study skills, time management, student success, orientation to college and professionalism. Students will be

required to attend two meetings during the semester. ORI 101 is not required for students taking ORI 107.

Financial Aid

Students receiving financial aid should read the following information carefully.

Financial assistance in the form of grants, loans and campus employment is available to qualified students.

Students should apply online at www.fafsa.gov. Loan applicants must also complete an institutional loan

information sheet and complete loan entrance counseling. For information and assistance, students should

contact the Financial Aid Office on the Wadley campus at 256-395-2211 or on the Opelika campus at

334-745-6437.

PACT:

Students who are using funds from the

PACT

program must email the Financial Aid Office at financialaid@

suscc.edu or send a request in writing to the Financial Aid Office. Please include student name, student number,

phone number, and a parent contact name and phone number. Please allow 48 hours for PACT processing.

ATTENTION: Students applying for financial aid should apply at least three months before the semester

begins. Applying early will help ensure a timely response to any unforeseen problems that may occur. The

priority deadline to apply for financial aid for Summer Term 2015 is April 1. Students who fail to meet this

deadline may not allow enough time for financial aid to process their paperwork, and therefore, would

need to be prepared to pay for classes at the time of registration.

RETURN OF TITLE IV FUNDS POLICY:

When a student receiving federal financial aid withdraws from school,

federal regulations require the application of a strict repayment formula. The student is eligible for a percentage

of financial aid in relation to the percentage of the term he/she was enrolled. Any amount of financial aid in

excess of that percentage earned must be repaid to the federal Title IV fund. If, according to the percentage

for-mula, the student has earned financial aid that has not been disbursed, the student may be eligible for those

funds even after withdrawal. If a student is the recipient of Title IV funds, he/she must attend classes to receive

aid. If a student fails to attend classes for which he/she is enrolled, no financial aid will be awarded for those

courses, and the student will be administratively withdrawn or dropped from those classes not attended.

NOTE: All students who receive aid and withdraw from school will be subject to a prorated refund with a 5% administrative fee.

Admission Policy

Southern Union State Community College has an open-door admissions policy. The College admits eligible

applicants at the beginning of the Fall semester, Spring semester, and Summer term. All students who have

earned a high school diploma or GED are eligible for admission. In addition to an admission application, students

are required to supply an official copy of their high school transcripts or GED scores and a form of photo

identification. The documentation must be submitted IN PERSON or by a NOTARIZED copy through the U.S. Mail.

Students transferring from another college must submit official transcripts from each college they have attended. In

addition to an application, transient students must submit a transient letter from their home institutions stating the

courses they will be allowed to take. All male students between the ages of 18 and 26 must certify compliance with

the U.S. Selective Service System in accordance with § 36-26-15.1 of the Code of Alabama 1974 (as amended)

before enrollment at the College. Graduates from a non-accredited high school with a diploma equivalent to the

Alabama High School Diploma must have a minimum ACT score of 16 or the equivalent SAT score of 780 to be

eligible for admission. If these requirements are not met, the student must take the GED test.

Special requirements may be applicable to International Students seeking admission. Further information is

avail-able by contacting the SU Admissions Office or viewing the college catalog. The International Student packet and

application are available at www.suscc.edu.

In addition to the required documents for admission to the College, an applicant to Health Sciences Programs

must complete an additional admission form for their designated program. Specific program admissions and

progression requirements for Health Sciences can be found on our website at www.suscc.edu.

A former student, previously enrolled at Southern Union who has not been in attendance for one or more terms,

will be required to complete a readmission application form. The re-enrollment form may be obtained from the

(7)

col-Southern Union offers classes online. These courses have been created to provide students with an opportunity

to take classes off-campus. Online courses are taught by SUSCC faculty and cover the same content that

tradi-tional students would expect to see. Online courses provide the same level of academic quality, credit and

integ-rity that SUSCC students expect. Well-organized, goal-oriented and self-motivated students can expect to do well

in an online class.

Students may register for online courses in the same manner that they would register for a traditional course.

There is no additional cost associated with distance education. Current tuition rates apply. First-time online

stu-dents will need to enroll in CIS290C. This is an ‘Online Learning Basics’ course that is designed to help stustu-dents

get over the anticipation of taking an online course for the first time. CIS290C is worth 1 credit hour. Even if a

student has had online courses at another school, CIS290C is required during the first semester at SUSCC.

Visit the SUSCC home page at www.suscc.edu and use information found on the the Distance Education page to

find out how to log in and get started with your online course.
