Adamsville Elementary

This has been another exciting year for Adamsville. Students have been able

to watch their new building go up as they peered through the chain link fence. A

tour of the partially fi nished facility was arranged for our sixth graders since they

will not have the privilege of being students in the new building. All staff and

many parent volunteers and PTO personnel were also able to tour the building.

Adamsville continued with its unique program, Power of SMART. Teachers

uti-lized real time information that served as a basis for adjusting instruction and

ac-tivities for meeting whole class and individual student needs. Students continued

with their “new and improved” data notebooks. Initial data indicate that the

ef-fort put ef-forth by students and teachers has paid off. Analysis would indicate that

we met 8 out of our 11 goals for reading, math, writing, science and social

stud-ies. Students experienced an average increase of 9.3% in the passage rate on Ohio

Achievement Tests when comparing this year’s performance to their own

perfor-mance last year in math and reading. Teachers were diligent in addressing content

standards and students responded. Our Pre-K through Grade 2 teachers are

uti-lizing diagnostic measures to address the skills that these students need to master.

Study Island was expanded to include other grade levels. We

contin-ue to use Success Maker and other resources to best meet student needs.

Adamsville Elementary was awarded the Literacy Improvement Grant

which helped fund many of our efforts to improve adolescent readers.

With many wonderful memories, three of our teachers, Mrs. George, Mrs. Lapp and

Mrs. Reed have retired. Thanks to all of them for their contributions to education

over the years. Happy Retirement!!

Adamsville volunteers add an unbelievable boost to our programs. On any

giv-en day, retirees, pargiv-ents, high school studgiv-ents, and middle school studgiv-ents can be

seen in the hallway helping students on a one-on-one basis. We could not begin to

accomplish what we have without this valuable support.

The Adamsville PTO continues to support our students and school in many

ways. Without their support we would not enjoy such things as COSI on

Wheels, Secret Santa, Spring Festival, Market Day, Field Day, supplies for

class-rooms, breakfast on testing days and much, much more. Thank you PTO!!

Frazeysburg Elementary

Frazeysburg Elementary School said a tearful goodbye and Happy Retirement to one of the community’s best loved teachers, Mrs. Barb

Freshwater. Mrs. Freshwater completed 33 years of teaching with Tri-Valley, and we wish her the best. Thank you for a job well done, Mrs. Freshwater!

This was a great year at Frazeysburg Elementary. We worked hard, played hard, and watched our new school being built! It has been

excit-ing to see the changes from movexcit-ing the dirt around, to makexcit-ing the pad, to seeexcit-ing the bricks go on the exterior. Our yearbook title this year

was “Under Construction” and next year’s title will be, “The Move” as the completion and move to the new building will be the major event.

Our academic goals this year were to successfully implement the new math program and to meet AYP on the Ohio Achievement Tests, while maintaining

the Excellent Status of our building. Three groups were started to support students’ academic needs. Homework Club met after school on Tuesdays and

Thursdays, and Lunch Bunch met to provide assistance with completing assignments and homework. Teachers volunteered their time to help students in

Lunch Bunch and at Home-

work Club. The District offered intervention

in STARS (Students Taking

Achievement Tests Seriously), which also

met after school in the Spring.

We had lots of fun eating

Green Eggs and Ham on Dr. Suess’ 50

th

birthday of Cat in The Hat.

Ms. Salahub and Mrs. Freshwater acted out

the book and made us all

laugh! Special guest readers read Cat in

The Hat to the classes and

everyone enjoyed Cat in The Hat

cup-cakes baked by Mrs. Stotts.

We want to thank our PTO

for all of the time and effort they give

to our school. The Fall

Festival and the candle sale were both

very successful, and the

money raised was used to pay for activities

and assemblies through-

out the year. The Sky Dome, a mobile

planetarium, was spon-

sored by our PTO. Students crawled

through a tunnel to get inside the 30 foot high dome and got to learn about the planets and constellations. What a fantastic way to learn!

Thanks also to our Parent Volunteers. Your help is priceless to the teachers in the classrooms, on fi eld trips, at the bookfairs, and on fi eld day. This year

we were fortunate to also have 20 Senior Reading Volunteers, who did an amazing job. The children looked forward to reading with their reading buddies.

It really does take a community to raise a child. The PTO, all of the Volunteers, the teaching staff, the offi ce staff, the cooks, the custodians, the bus drivers, and

the families of the students all make up our school community’s team. By working together, we can offer so much more to each child at Frazeysburg Elementary.

Frazeysburg Intermediate

It has been a PAWS-itively fun year at Frazeysburg Intermediate.

Students have been extremely busy with monthly Student of the Month

Luncheons to the Dairy Queen with the Principal, numerous hat and

spirit days, fundraisers, band and musical performances, award

ceremo-nies, and don’t forget all of the after school clubs we have:

scrapbook-ing, crochet, garden, yearbook, study buddies, test takers and drama.

Student council members were involved in the Power of One, where

they were trained to be a positive leader and demonstrate the power

that one individual can hold. All 176 fi fth graders participated in the

D.A.R.E. Program, pledging to stay Drug Free. Members of the 6

th

grade

P.A.C.E. visited Johnstown, Pennsylvania for a memorable fi eld trip.

The highlight for our 5

th

graders was an adventure at Camp Ohio.

While it was a bit chilly in October, the students didn’t mind. This

outdoor learning experience includes such activities as tree identifi cation, night hikes to identify the stars, a team challenge course

to build teamwork skills, outdoor cooking, pioneering, crafts, a zipline and educating them about The Underground Railroad.

Jefferson Elementary

Jefferson students, staff and families brought ‘new life’ to an old building this

year. The move to our temporary home was better than we could have imagined.

The big library and gymnasium were welcome additions. The students’ smiling

faces and work on the walls changed the look of a building that had been asleep

for a few years. We added our new activities to a building fi lled with tradition.

S t u d e n t a c h i e v e m e n t r o s e a n d w e m a i n t a i n e d o u r s t a t e s t a

-t u s o f ‘ E ff e c -t i v e ’ . We c o n -t i n u e d -t o w o r k o n o u r r e a d i n g g o a l s ,

as well as implement a new and very hands-on Everyday Math program.

Jefferson Elementary traditions continued with spirit days, special

holi-day parties, and the annual Grandparents’ Day. The festival, even though

in a high school building, was the best ever!!! It was a beautiful

day with great attendance. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive.

Thanks to our PTO, we were able to bring many educational opportunities to our

students through assemblies. The Columbus Children’s Theatre performance

brought professional acting to the Jefferson stage. Our students laughed out loud

at the antics of the actors. They took our students into the world of theatre.

Musk-ingum College’s Symphony and Jazz Orchestras mesmerized our students with

their awesome music. Our students were so enthralled that they didn’t even move!!

We also had a professional storyteller that brought tall tales and Ohio culture

alive. We wrapped up the year learning about Ohio’s endangered birds from the

Ohio Endangered Bird Society. Students got a close up look at hawks and owls.

The biggest event of the year was author and illustrator Daniel Kirk. He was able

to bring the writing process alive for our students. He shared how one simple

idea changed many times to become a story, complete with many written drafts.

Safety continued as a priority. We appreciated the cooperation of all our

par-ents as we went to one entrance into the building. The new drop-off and

pick-up procedures required the patience and extra effort on the part of our families.

Our building won the Gold Award for Buckeye Best. This award

recog-nizes health and nutrition awareness/programs offered in the building.

The support of our PTO and volunteers is greatly valued and appreciated.

The PTO not only supports our efforts financially, but also with their time

and dedication to our students and staff. Our success would never be

pos-sible without the untiring volunteers who contributed over 6000 hours of service.

At the end of next year, Jefferson will be moving into a brand new

ele-mentary complete with technology and space for everyone!! What

an exciting adventure that will be for the youth of our community!!

Nashport Elementary

Nashport Elementary School continues to focus on academic achievement and

commu-nity involvement, two key components for school success. Building goals established at

the beginning of the year included increased community involvement and academic growth

and achievement for all children. Teachers and staff worked diligently and monitored

progress so all goals were met. Evidence of this success is based on Nashport

Elemen-tary receiving an Excellent rating on the Ohio Department of Education’s State Report Card.

Our building also developed a new school-wide system for behavior to ensure all are recognized

for making positive and responsible choices as well as teaching and modeling expected behaviors.

Students and staff were recognized for positive actions (PAWS) and school expectations, a school

pledge and a Nashport Elementary song were created. What a great way to make learning and

school goals a common focus. We appreciate our parent support with this new initiative and look forward to another year of recognized accomplishments.

Fourth grade students participated in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) as students completed tests in math and

read-ing. Their scores will be included with other participating schools and will be represented in the Nation’s Report Card which monitors

stu-dent performance throughout our country. We are proud of our teachers and stustu-dents as they accomplished this important assessment.

The Nashport Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) made several assemblies and activities possible this school year such as COSI on Wheels, a

Holi-day House, Right to Read Storybook Character Parade, Summer Activity Fair and P.T.Reptile. Students learned about agriculture, reptiles and

am-phibians, had fun meeting book characters and shopped for family and friends during the holidays. Without the support and dedication of our

PTO as well as our volunteers these assemblies and learning adventures would not have been possible. We thank them for these opportunities.

A brand new morning Latch Key program was started this school year for families and was housed at Nashport Elementary. Students were enlightened both

aca-demically and socially during these sessions. The Tri-Valley Board of Education has agreed to continue

the support for this program again next year. Another new initiative started at the building was the Market

Day food distribution program sponsored through the Nashport PTO. Order profi ts received monthly

support Nashport students, teachers and staff. We look forward to this program continuing as well.

Next year Nashport Elementary will be moving to a new state of the art structure. What an exciting time

for students, staff and parents. We will have a new look on the outside, but will continue our internal focus

of student achievement, a positive learning environment and community involvement. As we make the

transition from K-4 to new K-6 buildings we will continue to make academic success and love of learning

for all children top priority. We look forward with anticipation and excitement to this new adventure!

Tri-Valley Middle School

Once again the school year seemed to soar by even faster than previous years. Our year was focused on using avail-able data to enhance student OAT success, improving writing skills across the curriculum, participating in community service projects, competing in many extra curricular activities, and learning to support each other in diffi cult situations. In early September, the teaching staff analyzed our achievement test data to identify strengths and weaknesses by individual students and subgroups of students. This information was used to develop student intervention for Prime Time, plan classroom instruction, and implementation of Study Island, a computer program designed to support mastery of grade level indicators. The students were presented with four test practice sessions where they earned prize tickets for meeting the building effort rubric. The drawings for the prizes (TV, MP3 Player, Lava Lamp, TV hats, TV shirts, Domino food items, and large candy bars) were held the last day of school. Improving writing was a building goal for the 2006 – 2007 year. Writing rubrics were developed to access overall writing as well as two point and four point questions on tests. We anticipate positive test results due to our concentrated focus by all. The Parent Support group conducted several fundraisers to purchase agendas for the students, sponsored dances, and provided support to each teacher’s classroom. The parent volunteers worked countless hours supporting our classrooms, the offi ce, and many other activities throughout the year. We truly appreciate the work of our parents. The middle school students were involved in many extra curriculum activities that were very successful. The sports program won MVL titles in 7th grade girls volleyball and girls track. The girls track team also won the Tri-Valley Invitational and County Track meet. The boys track team was

runner up at the Tri Valley Invitational. The boys Soccer team won the Kids America Tournament while the girl’s soccer team and the 8th grade boys team were runner ups. The

band and choir participated in OMEA District IX Solo and Ensemble event and the choir also attended the large group event. Their ratings ranged from good to excellent and su-perior. Our Middle School marchers contributed to the high school band program and won a superior rating at the State Competition. The Math Counts A team placed 2nd and

advanced to the state competition. Three of our mathletes competed in the Countdown Round. In the unregistered category the D team placed 3rd and one student placed 3rd in

this category. The student body collected over 1,000 can food items for the Salvation Army. The National Junior Honor Society sponsored the 3rd annual staff/student

basket-ball game. The students defeated the staff and raised over $1,000.00 that was given to the Tri Valley Endowment Fund in memory of 8th grader Jordan Roman. The students

held other fund raisers to support Jordan’s family through this diffi cult loss. Membership to the NJHS was extended to 23 eighth graders and 87 seventh graders who met lead-ership, scholarship, service, character, and citizenship criteria. The year concluded with fi eld day and the annual talent show sponsored by the Physical Education department.

The end of the year also brought about the retirement of Mr. Jeff Keller. Mr. Keller has taught and coached for 35 years. He most recently taught Language Arts at the Middle School and coached Cross County at the High School. His loyalty and dedication to the Tri Valley students will be missed. Mr. Casey Coffey, assistant principal, accepted the principal position at Sheridan Middle School in the Northern Local School District. His knowledge and abilities as an adminis-trator provided valuable contributions to our successful year.

Plans for the 2007 – 2008 year will include: • further enhancement of teaching and learning • building upon our OAT results to meet excellent rating

• defi ne intervention to meet student needs

develop a positive learning experience

academically and socially for our students

Tri-Valley High School

The High School was an extrememly active place with renovation construction, especially in the locker rooms and the new gym

area. It’s exciting to see the walls going up and brick being positioned. The administrative offi ces and new gyms are

sched-uled for completion in mid-December. In spite of all this activity, educational activities and numerous events were held.

The Board of Education approved over 240 seniors for graduation, and 208 students participated in the commencement exercises held on

May 20, 2007 in the Jack Anderson Stadium. The senior speakers were Caleb Priest, Megan Grigsby, Barbie Miller and Kimberly

Wol-ford. Special mention was given to Brandon Merriam, a classmate who passed away and would have graduated with the class of 2007.

Don McAllister was chosen as the Franklin B. Walter Award winner of Muskingum County. This is the sixth year in a row that a Tri-Valley

student has won this scholarship. Morgan Graham was also chosen as a top student and nominated Middle School science teacher, Mrs.

Colleen McCann, as a teacher making the biggest impact on her career. All three were honored at a presentation held at the Muskingum

Valley Educational Center. Alisha Myers was nominated by high school english Teacher, Mrs. Kay Graham, for the Rotary Phoenix Award.

The Acadmic Banquet had approximately 500 guests. The theme this year was “Education --Your Key to Success”. Certifi cates and Honor

Letters were presented for outstanding academic accomplishments. Guest speakers were Tami Longaberger, CEO of Longaberger, and

Dr. Eric Newsome. Both speakers are former alumni and spoke of their educational paths to succesful careers. The Hall of Distinction

Award was presented to two recipeints. Bradley Harper, a soldier killed in the line of duty was inducted with his parents, Mr. and Mrs.

Steve Harper accepting the honor. Additionally, Mr. Jeff Garver, Dresden Chief of Police and a member of the Dresden Fire Department

was inducted. His award was presented by Mr. Doug Spade, Superintendent, and Mrs. Eva Sieber, President of the Board of Education.

Tri-Valley’s athletic teams were very successful this year. Tri-Valley won the All-Sports Trophy in the MVL and the

fol-lowing teams earned League Championships: Boys Soccer, Boys Basketball, Boys Cross Country, Boys Track and

Volleyball. These teams competed well in the tournament seasons: Girls Soccer and Boys Basketball were both

District Champs and competed at the Regional Semi-Finals, Boys Soccer was District Champs and competed in the

Re-gional Finals, and the Football team made their fi rst ever appearance in the Football Playoffs held at Dover High School.

The Nova Net program was utilized for credit recovery and for the Ohio Graduation Test (OGT) preparation. An intervention program

during and after-school was implemented this year as well as Study Island, an

internet based program aligned with Ohio Academic Content standards,to provide

students additional practice skills for improving performance on the OGT. Both of

the intervention programs will continue to be offered this coming school year.

Pro-gressBook is also being utilized by parents and students to access academic

prog-ress on-line. Many resource sites are available on-line to help parents and students

to become familar with student expecations at the 9th-12th grade levels. These

sites addresses can be found on the Tri-Valley District High School Home Page.

We look forward to an exciting new school year with many changes and

chal-lenges.
