Learning and Teaching Professional Development Framework
Guide 9: Recording information about your teaching qualifications and professional recognition /
memberships
Purpose To assist with the accurate recording of any teaching qualifications and/or professional recognition and memberships. This will enable College HR teams to update the information on your personal record, and ensure we reflect staff qualifications accurately in national statistics. This is an important exercise to
help us ensure we can reflect public information about NTU academic staff as accurately as possible. We appreciate your time in helping the University improve the quality of our personal staff information.
Target audience For all Academic and Research Staff including Hourly-Paid Lecturers checking the information held on them in their personal record, and recording information of their teaching qualifications/ and professional
recognition and memberships
Context The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) collects and reports a wide range of staff and student related information from all universities, including information on the qualifications held by academic staff, including all hourly-paid lecturers irrespective of the hours they work.
From the 31st July 2013, we will be required to include information about 10 different categories of teaching
qualifications and professional recognition held by our academic staff (see Table 1 of this guide). We anticipate that this information is likely to be published as part of the Key Information Set (KIS) which students and their parents will use to compare universities. Information about other academic qualifications (eg Masters and PhDs) held by academic staff is already published.
A recent review of our NTU academic staff information revealed significant gaps in the information. For instance, colleagues not recorded as holding PhDs and other higher qualifications. We are keen, therefore, to update existing information as well as collect the new information with the minimum of disruption to already busy colleagues.

9.1 What’s required of all Academic Staff in each School (including HPLs) and Research staff: Between November 2012 and February 2013, you will be provided with a transcript of your personal HR record listing the information recorded about your qualifications.
You are required to check the accuracy of the current information listed on it, correct any errors, and add in omissions using the following guidance:
For each qualification listed or that you add, please ensure you :
o Indicate with an asterisk or the highest academic qualification you hold
o Write the full award title, any honours, the subject or discipline AND the award letters abbreviation For example, Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Sciences, PhD
For example, Masters of Science in Biomedical Engineering, MSc
For example, Bachelor of Arts with honours in English and Media Studies, BA (hons) For example, Bachelor of Music, BMus
For example, Bachelor of Arts in Music, BA For example, Bachelor of Metallurgy, BMet For example, Higher National Diploma, HND
o Avoid listing partial award titles such as ‘Masters’ or ‘Degree’ or ‘Certificate’ – list the full award or qualification title
o For any Vocational qualifications, please indicate level eg National Vocational Qualification Level 3 in Art, NVQ 3 not NVQ in Art
o Avoid leaving just the award letters – list the title out in full to ensure it can be recorded accurately For example, what qualification or award has the abbreviation: C.A.C.D.P. ?
For example, what qualification or award has the abbreviation: CPSA ? For example, what qualification or award has the abbreviation: MQB ?
3 | P a g e
o Write the qualification award - not the awarding body or the course title
For example, CCETSW is not a qualification – it is an awarding body (Central Council for Education and Training in Social Work) – list the qualification awarded by them
For example, British Horse Society – what is the qualification or award? Is this a membership such as Fellow or Member?
For example BTech HND – Btech is the awarding body, HND is the qualification
For example D32 – state the qualification award title and wording rather than the shorthand number
Note about recording teaching qualifications, professional recognition and memberships
o Table 1 on the next page lists the categories of teaching qualification, professional recognition and memberships that will be required in our next HESA return (summer 2013).
o On the back of your transcript, you will find a table of boxes with numbers corresponding to these categories – and an additional ‘OTHER’ box.
o Please list any teaching qualifications, professional recognition and memberships against the relevant
category.
o If you have additional teaching qualifications that aren’t included, please list them in the ‘OTHER’ box.
o Please remember to write out your qualifications titles as you would wish them to appear on your record, to ensure that HR colleagues have all the information necessary to enter the data accurately on your record.
Please note there is no need to produce documentary evidence of your qualifications etc., at this point. Our priority is to update our staff records first. Your College HR colleagues will then make separate arrangements with each academic team to copy certificates at a later date.
