COMMUNITY COLLEGES

INTRODUCTION

The 30 public community colleges in Michigan are individually profiled in this

section. Requirements, deadline dates, phone numbers, cost estimates, and housing

information are all provided. The various programs under which courses are

offered are also listed. Please see the introduction to the Program Cross Reference

Index for an explanation of the program arrangement sequence.

The community college provides a wide range of programs in order to meet the

ever-increasing needs of the local community for educational opportunities beyond

the high school level. By statute, however, a community college in Michigan may

only offer course work leading to less than a baccalaureate degree.

The programs offered tend to fall into the following categories:

Liberal Arts and Professional Programs – Pre-professional training designed to

provide transfer credit to four-year institutions. Dentistry, education, law,

medicine, etc., are just a few of the program areas.

Vocational-Technical Programs – Occupations in the fields of business, public

service, technology, etc. An Associate’s of Arts degree or certificate is awarded

upon completion of a program. Some transfer credits may apply to specific

schools.

Apprenticeship Instruction Programs – Designed to meet the needs of local

industry for related trade instruction. These programs are primarily available to

students who are already employed in the sponsoring industry.

In most cases, information is also provided pertaining to the number of

semester/term hours required to complete the program and whether and teaching

certificate is available in conjunction with it.
