OBJECTIVES FOR THE 2008 PLA CONFERENCE
The retirement funding industry has been undergoing change for a number of years now but the feeling amongst many is that what is currently taking place in our industry is more than 'change'. For this reason we have chosen as the theme for the 2008 Conference
"a revolution for retirement funds"
. We believe that pension lawyers and others are in a position at this time to engage with and positively influence these developments. The intention for the 2008 conference is to provide a forum for the exchange and sharing of information that pension law practitioners require to be effective in their fields, and to provide a forum for high level legal discussion and debate about the developments taking place within our industry, where things stand and where we are headed.PROGRAMME
Highlights from the Programme include:
(These are subject to change) § An update on developments regarding the interaction between the private retirement sector and the national social security system § Exploring the implications of various constitutional provisions on aspects of pension law § As we think about retirement reform what is, or should be, the true legal nature of a pension fund? § What are trustees’ duties in relation to member investment choice? § What standards will courts use to measure the conduct of independent trustees? § The legal difficulties of including bargaining council funds under the Pension Funds Act that arise from conflicts between pension law and labour law § Data protection laws affecting retirement funds § Legal developments and challenges relating to the establishment of beneficiary funds § Legal issues arising from fund investments § Retirement fund developments in Africa § Regulatory Update § An update from the Office of the Pension Funds Adjudicator plus more . . . Sessions will be structured as a mix of plenary discussions, panel discussions, breakaway sessions and short sessions focusing on specific complex issues.Programme qualifies for continued
