Census

Thank you to those of you who have returned your census forms either with noted corrections or confirmation that there are no changes at your residential address. If you still haven’t returned your census, please do so as soon as possible. Dog Licenses

Many folks have either stopped into town hall or via mail requested to license their dog(s) for 2017. There are still many on record who have not, so this is a friendly reminder to do so before May 1;

otherwise, there will be a late fee of $20/dog. For the safety of all dogs in town we maintain a list of all licensed dogs as well as dogs on record that veterinarians have advised us have their rabies vaccination, but may not licensed. The census package included a dog license application for dog owners on record to license their dog. For first time licensing of your dog(s), you may go to the Town web site and print a form to complete. You may also call, request a form via mail, email or stop by the Town Hall. All dogs that are six months of age or older must be licensed annually under M.G.L. Ch. 140. An updated proof of rabies vaccination is required prior to licensing as well as proof of spaying and neutering. Incomplete applications will be returned to the sender. Notary Public

The Town Clerk, as well as the Town

Administrator/Matt Streeter are Notaries Public. If you need our services, please call either of us and make an appointment. The service is free of charge to Granville residents.

Otis Farmers Market

It’s hard to believe that in less than two months it will be farmers market season again. Spring will be here and our growing season will begin, as soon as all of this snow melts! Digging up the earth has always been one of my favorite past times, as is planting seeds and watching them grow. Weeding on the other hand…..

As our farm works to produce our maple syrup crop for this upcoming season, it’s hard to believe that another winter has passed and another year at the Otis Farmers Market is about to begin. As we embark on our 13th year at this market I think of all the wonderful people that have given us so much to keep us going. There just aren’t enough words to begin to thank Larry Southard and his staff at Papa’s Healthy Food & Fuel for their continued generosity. Nor are there enough smiles to thank all of you, our patrons, who come out on your Saturday mornings to see us in wind, rain, and even the occasional snow shower! Without the support of any of you we would not be able to exist.

This year’s market season has much to offer! We will be introducing another produce vendor, Ray’s Farm of Southwick, to our crew. We are hoping that the increase in produce will give you more options. We are also welcoming back as a full time vendor, First Flower Farm of Great Barrington, with their flower syrups and produce. Grace Hill Farm out of Cummington will be returning with their amazing cheese for our peak season. Windy Crest Farm of Granville will be back joining us with their fragrant goat milk soap. And if this spring doesn’t destroy the peach and apple crop again, we will be

welcoming the return of Hillside Orchard of Granville for the end of our peak season. Add these products on to our already existing repertoire of plants, produce, eggs, baked goods, canned goods, honey, maple syrup, maple products, farm raised pork, grass fed

beef, micro greens, natural soaps and body products, handmade one of a kind jewelry, tie dye, and of course homemade Italian and Albanian food, and you have a very diverse market.

All of these products will be featured once again in our CSM (Community Supported Market) Shares, which will run from July 1st through September 2nd, our peak season. The cost of the shares is remaining the same, which are $155 for the Lone Farmer, $255 for the Goose & Gander, and $505 for the Herd Feed Bag. Shares are picked up on these dates after 10 am but before the close of market at 1 pm. Partial payment is expected before the peak season begins, and the rest half way through. Each week we provide you with a variety of what the market has to offer. We even started with themes a couple of years ago, just to make it more of a meal idea! If you are interested in having a CSM share this season, please contact us via email (OtisFM1@ymailmcom), phone (413‐357‐9919), facebook or just see us at market when the season begins!

That goes for anyone who wishes to be a vendor or musician as well. We like to offer as much as we can at our market, so if you are a farmer or a crafter and would like to set up for the day it is $25. Live music always helps to add ambiance to the market experience, so if you are a musician and would like to make a little extra money and a bag of market goodies, give us a call! We look forward to this year’s market season being a good one, and we look forward to catching up with all of you on May 13th, opening day!

Happy spring!

OBITUARIES

Elizabeth “Betty” A. (Gurney) Carpenter

Betty, age 85, ascended into the journey of everlasting life, on Thursday March 2, 2017; in the care and comfort of her loving family.

Betty was born on January 12, 1932, in Springfield, Massachusetts, a daughter of the late Howard and Blanche (Joubert) Gurney. She was a graduate of the High School of Commerce. For many years she lived in East Longmeadow, and in 1962 she moved to Granville. She was the first female Postmaster for the Town of Granville. Beginning her career as a part time clerk in 1965, she became Postmaster in 1983 and retired from that position in 1992. As postmaster, she started a program of having the kindergarten children from the Granville school write a letter to Santa and then come to the post office to turn the hand crank machine to cancel the stamp on their letters. Then the children would drop their letters into a specially built Post Office Box. Betty answered every letter. Betty was very involved with the Parents Group of the former Work Opportunity Center. The group planned events for their special needs family members.

Betty worshiped at Granville Federated Church; and a member of the church’s Ladies Aid. She was a member of the Granville Quilt Guild, and during our country’s Bicentennial, she added her own creation of the “post office” patch to the town’s memorial quilt. She was the originator of the “About Town Tag Sale” for the ever‐popular tag sales seen around Granville. Betty started a Monday senior card game in her home that grew so much in popularity that it moved to the town hall. She was an active member of the Granville Council on Aging. For forty‐two years she was an Avon representative.

In addition to her parents, Betty was predeceased by a granddaughter, Catherine Carpenter in 1986. Betty is survived by her four daughters and son: Gail Bloxom and her husband Bob, of Mooresville, North Carolina; Karen J. Carpenter and her companion John (Zeke) Zielinski, of Granville, MA; Joan deForest and her husband William, of Callahan, FL; Wendy Carpenter of Westfield, MA; and son Amos Carpenter III and his wife Karen, of Granville, MA; sister Claire Patruno of Wilbraham, MA ; brother William Gurney of Springfield, MA; sister Lois Gran of Springfield, MA; nine grandchildren, Nathan Beauregard and his wife Rebecca, of Greenfield, MA; Benjamin Huffman of Mooresville, North Carolina; Calvin Beauregard and his wife Carissa, of Westfield, MA; Colleen Giroux and her husband Walter, of Granville, MA; Jerome deForest and his wife Roxanne, of Callahan, Florida ; Mindy Virgille and her husband Daniyyel, of Jacksonville, FL; Amy Poirier and her husband Michael, of Avon, CT; Alex Carpenter and Adam Carpenter both of Granville, MA; 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to the caring staff, doctors, nurses and aides at Westfield Gardens and to the Beacon Hospice of Springfield, MA. Betty was especially touched by Pastor Dan and his family from Chester, MA when they came for worship and sing praises every Thursday at Westfield Gardens.

Regina, age 100 (1916‐2017) Ascended into the Journey of Everlasting Life, on March 14, 2017, in the care of her loving family. She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Maurice W. Heath, in 2001; a son, Norman Heath in 2001; a daughter, Dorothy Cusson, in 2010; a son‐in‐law Peter Cusson, in 2000, a

grandson, Dale Cusson, in 1974; a daughter‐in‐law, Jean Heath, and several brothers and sisters. Regina is survived by her son, Roger Heath, and his wife, Gretchen of Ludlow, MA; a son, Karl Heath, of Southwick, MA; and a son, Paul Heath, of West Springfield, MA. She leaves loving nephews Leon Milcherska and his wife Naomi, and Norman Milcherska and his wife Marie, all of South Bend, IN. Regina also leaves 15 grandchildren, 22 great‐grandchildren, one great‐great‐grandchild, several beloved nieces and nephews, and many dear, close friends. She was born in Newton, Missouri, then had lived several years in Hyde Park, Vermont, where she and Maurice raised their family. After a number of years of living in Granville, MA, and Summerfield, Florida, she relocated to Southwick, where she lived out her final years. She had spent the last year of her life in the loving care of the wonderful staff of Heritage Hall in Agawam, where she recently celebrated her 100th year of life. She enjoyed crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, bingo, and

spending time with her loved ones. Nothing made her happier than to be surrounded by her family and friends. A devout Roman Catholic, Regina practiced her faith as a long time parishioner of Our Lady of the Lake Church.

Mildred L. (Chapman) Griffin

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Mildred L. (Chapman) Griffin, on Saturday, March 11, 2017. Mom was born on February 16, 1917, to Frederick and Naomi (Cook) Chapman in West Granville, MA. Her mother died when she was 15, and she learned that no matter what hand you got dealt, you had to get out of bed every morning, put one foot in front of the other and do what had to be done, without complaining, because that didn’t accomplish anything. This attitude and her comical, witty sense of humor helped propel her to live to be 100 years old! Millie graduated from Westfield High School in 1936 and continued to take care of her younger sister and brother. She married Henry L. Griffin and had 3 children. When her youngest child started school, she went to work at Boxmakers in Westfield where she worked for 23 years, retiring in 1982. Millie loved gardening, baking, spending time with family, poetry, animals, and music. She was a self‐taught piano player, who could play by ear anything she heard. She always said music brought people together and scowled at us when we said we thought alcohol did that.

Millie’s Country Store in Southwick was opened in 1997 by her two daughters and aptly‐named after her because good food to us meant going to “moms”. Customers enjoyed her home‐baked cakes and

cookies, and on Thursdays, her corn chowder. Millie is survived by her loving children: Gene Griffin and his wife Rolita of Granville; Lee Archambault and his wife Diane; Marie Boccasile and Joice Romboletti. She leaves her granddaughter Karen (Griffin) Michna and her husband, Rich, and great grandsons Joshua and Nicolas; and her grandsons Lee, Mark, Kevin, and Kris and their children.

Many thanks to her very special friend, Bruce Duval, for the time he spent with her and all the cakes and cookies he brought when mom no longer baked. Her lap will be greatly missed by her feline fur babies. Millie was predeceased by her parents; her brother, Wallace Chapman; her sister, Helena, who died at age 14; and her husband Henry L. Griffin.
