4 of 22
Customers are able to avoid hardware erosion, which would ordinarily require on-going capital investments to retain technology at a then current state. Customers have the option of upgrading during the term of the agreement.
SunGard provide a completely unified platform for operating a server environment from network, internet, security, computing and storage – all delivered through a Tier 1 multi-vendor architecture. This means that SunGard delivers a complete end-to-end platform that does not require the customer to invest in any further data centre level architecture.
Customers’ data are backed-up at a secondary site on a periodic basis, ensuring that there is always a then current copy of files available in the event of a disaster. Any version of a file may be restored from SunGard’s archives.
Whilst SunGard takes ownership of running the customer’s infrastructure and server
environment, the customer retains ownership of running their applications. This means that the customer controls all their business applications and operations at an application level and releases all server level management to SunGard. The benefit of this model is that it releases a significant number of IT headcounts and resources, enabling the customer to remain focused on running their business applications.
Highly available – As you’d expect from SunGard, the solution has been designed to the highest specifications for resiliency to minimise downtime.
Efficient – The underlying technology focuses on maximising the utilisation of computing power resource pools and storage resulting in less wasted resource.
Reuse – The IT infrastructure and contracts have been designed so that the IT infrastructure can be readily reused either by the customer or SunGard, so improving the ROI and the ability to change the IT infrastructure faster to adapt to the changing needs of the business.
ServiceNow – SunGard, as a customer of ServiceNow, uses ServiceNow products for its ticketing system. SunGard regards ServiceNow as part of its tools development and the notion of delivering IT as a Service.
ServiceNow makes IT more accessible, intuitive and social, qualities that SunGard has built in to its Cloud solutions. ServiceNow creates a single system of record for all IT processes within a company. SunGard believe that IT should be accessible to ALL users in an organization, should it be their policy, and ServiceNow delivers a productivity tool for all types of business users including the CIO, service desk staff, application developers, IT finance, IT operations and business people. The SunGard Content Delivery Network Service
Service Overview
The Content Delivery Network (CDN) service enables the acceleration of media and software distribution over the internet with minimal capital costs to customers. As part of SunGard’s line of Managed Service solutions, the CDN service is delivered over a high speed global
communications network, providing contracted 99.99% up time of the service. What is the Service?
The SunGard CDN service is an infrastructure of servers strategically placed across a network of 21 points of presence (POPs) in 4 continents to host your website or other content. When your customers look to access that website or content, then the CDN Service will direct them to the closest server for maximum bandwidth, rather than to a central server, which is likely to provide a slower delivery for customers a large distance away. This results in much faster page loads, high quality media that plays instantly (and keeps playing), lightning fast downloads and quicker transactions for all users.
Features
CDN offers customers who do not have the appetite or resources for building or managing data centre capabilities the opportunity to deliver their media and software over the internet via a high speed network infrastructure.
• The EdgeCast infrastructure, software, and communications links at 21 (POPs) Worldwide and 4 continents ensure a nonstop service; this is backed up by a 99.99% SLA that will provide service credits in the unlikely event of service failure.
• The service has an intuitive user interface, enabling customized screens, easy account setup, password management, separate sub account billing and high quality monitoring capabilities.
• Fully managed solution, provided by SunGard, the leader in comprehensive Information Availability solutions
• Fastest Network performance in the world, EdgeCast’s CDN is global and highly optimized
• Cost-effective, Reduces requirement for own infrastructure
• Account established and managed within minutes via intuitive portal interface
• Real time monitoring of performance and usage
• Scalable solution, ‘pay as you grow’ Network connectivity
• Customer account will be established via the user interface
• SunGard will setup necessary cname URL changes Customer responsibilities
Customer chooses their rules engine configuration, there is an option to choose an automatic caching behaviour based on best practice and generic usage patterns
Proof of concept process
Using the EdgeCast portal (‘the PCC’) a live trial of the CDN service can be performed on content of the customer’s choosing.

SunGard Corporate Responsibility Statement
SunGard supports mission-critical operations of financial institutions, businesses, local
governments, public safety and justice agencies, and educational institutions around the world. It is through our commitment to doing things the right way and doing them well that we have earned the trust of our customers to help them with their most critical missions. Our good name and reputation are based on setting and achieving high standards for how we conduct ourselves. We also believe that as one of the world’s leading software and technology services companies we have an obligation to use our size and influence to raise ethical, social and environmental standards wherever we do business. We focus our Corporate Responsibility efforts in three main areas:
• Environmental
• Social
• Governance
This section outlines what SunGard Availability Services in the UK is doing in regard to our CR commitment.
ENVIRONMENTAL
SunGard firmly believes in corporate environmental responsibility and has long acknowledged the benefits of ‘operating green’ as good business practice. We have been at the vanguard of minimising overall environmental impact for several decades by providing shared, high-intensity IT resources to businesses so these organisations do not have to consume redundant servers, electrical power and other resources themselves.
Environmental Management and Control
In 2010 SunGard Availability Services globally accounted for 86.5% of all SunGard Data Systems C02 & GHG emissions. The efficiency of emissions per square foot was improved by 3.4% across Availability Services data centres, helping SunGard avoid 11,000 imperial tons of GHG emissions. Of the 86.5%, SunGard Availability Services UK accounted for 13.3%.
SunGard manages its environmental impact using the Green Board management system. This helps to understand, manage and minimise SunGard’s impact on the planet. In addition to the environment and energy usage aspects, SunGard will be able to use this new tool to impact on a wider basis with regard to our supply chain, products, people and stake holders.
Partnerships
SunGard became a member of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development in 2007. In addition to this, SunGard is a member of the Corporate EcoForum and The Green Grid: the consortium of leading information technology companies and professionals seeking to improve energy efficiency in data centres around the globe and whose members include IBM, Sun Microsystems, Cisco and APC. The Green Grid has also endorsed the European Union Code of Conduct for Data Centre Energy efficiency, which all Green Grid members are automatically aligned to. We are a signatory to the Bali, Poznan and Copenhagen communiqués of the Prince of Wales Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change and we are also partners with the Prince’s Rainforest Project. In the US, we have also worked with the Environmental Defence Fund’s Climate Corps programme as part of KKR’s Green Portfolio Program.
18 of 22 UK Environmental Policy
SunGard recognises its legal and moral responsibilities under all relevant environmental legislation and consideration of the environment has equal ranking with the company’s responsibilities for commercial, operational and financial aspects of the business.
During 2007 we consulted with the Carbon Trust and implemented its recommendations in readiness for the Carbon Reduction Commitment, as it was then known so that we were prepared to comply with the new legislation. SunGard therefore prepared to adapt to the CRC successor, the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme and was one of the first companies to register for the scheme.
SunGard Availability Services’ UK Sustainability Initiatives
SunGard is an aggressive adopter of green technology, researching and adopting best of breed components for our infrastructure, systems and services. In 2010 SunGard completely refreshed its entire PC estate at its Workplace Recovery Centres when the existing PCs came to the end of their useful life. SunGard’s new PC estate, bearing in mind our PCs are mostly in idle mode for most of their time, are specially procured because they were designed to run 45% more efficiently whilst in idle mode.
• A server rationalisation programme that resulted in the disposal of ageing, energy-hungry machines and their replacement with fewer, high performance servers
• £60,000 invested in a state-of-the-art video conferencing equipment to reduce the number of business trips and the associated CO2 emissions, with another £180,000 reserved to extend the capability across Europe
• Investment in HP energy efficient combi-printers and rationalised our staff office printers and fax machines in some offices by as much as 75%
• Reconfiguring floor space to remove voids at our London Technology Centre and Livingston Workplace Recovery Centre to maximise server capacity
• Installed energy efficient chillers at our LTC datacentre
• Return on IT, is our chosen company to manage the disposal of our retired IT equipment. They help to reuse and recycle computers in a secure, socially responsible way.
Further proactive measures include:
• SunGard has implemented ½ hour energy meters at all SunGard Availability sites where SunGard is legally responsible for energy consumption and payment of the energy bills.
SunGard has been proactive in supporting this initiative having volunteered senior members of staff to sit on the advisory panels of Intellect, who in turn with a much louder industry voice, have been advising and helping the UK Government to perfect the legislation. This has led to a root and branch review of the scheme in the way in which the scheme is to be implemented, which at the time of writing is yet to be concluded by the UK Government. SunGard also sits on the CBI’s Climate Change Group.
• As well as publishing SunGard’s carbon performance reports on our Corporate Website, SunGard also publishes its carbon performance in the energy Carbon Disclosure Project Website: In 2011 SunGard will also publish its performance in Newsweek Green Ranking and the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
19 of 22 New Energy Efficient Products and Services
Specifically, SunGard has launched two new services (mentioned above) that will help customers and SunGard to reduce energy consumption.
1. Cloud Computing Services
SunGard has invested in a scalable cloud computing infrastructure to offer customers energy efficient computing services, so that customers don’t have to make the same duplicate investments. Energy efficiencies are derived from more efficient use of large scale computing power capability, the customer turns it on only when it’s needed. Spare computing capacity is made available for use to other customers. This means that SunGard’s own efficient, large-scale, Data centres run at optimum energy performance levels.
2. Recover Anywhere™
SunGard’s new Workplace Recovery service enables organisations to recover most of their staff without having to house all of them in Physical Workplace Recovery centres. The service leverages existing PCs and telephony belonging to staff in their home environment or wherever they can access IT and Communications technology. This means that SunGard will no longer need to build and increase the capacity of its Recovery centres at the rate prior to the launch of Recover Anywhere.
3. Enhanced Recovery
SunGard has eliminated the need for customers to travel to our data centres. We provide the ability for systems analysts to administer their servers securely from anywhere in the world. For some of our customers with low cost, offshore services in places such as India, they no longer need to travel to the UK as much to perform routine tasks, saving many tons of CO2 and time each year.
Reducing Carbon Associated with Travel
SunGard has become a prolific user of WebEx and teleconferencing tools. The objective being to reduce internal staff travel and where appropriate it is included in customers’ business meetings too. In 2011 SunGard invested in the first of several state-of-the-art CISCO teleconferencing suites, further reducing the need to travel to meet people face to face.
SunGard Data Centres – Operational Efficiency
All of SunGard’s data centres have been built with energy efficiency in mind, are in-line with SunGard’s environmental policies, and reflect the Carbon Trust’s latest guidance on data centre carbon load and energy consumption.
Specifically, SunGard implemented the following during 2008:
• New server technology which consumes less power and generates less heat.
• The use of virtualisation technologies to consolidate server usage and improve operational efficiency.
We follow rigid maintenance procedures, centralise operations where possible and integrate planning for the business and our datacentres to achieve efficiencies and minimise our carbon footprint.
20 of 22
SunGard data centres provide mission critical production and recovery computing environments for some of the most discerning customers who demand the highest performance measures in terms of information availability or ‘uptime’. So SunGard will only ever adopt proven “low energy” IT assets and facilities management technology.
However, this doesn’t prevent SunGard from striving to achieve operational energy efficiencies. SunGard has already achieved ratings of 1.3 Power Usage Effective (PUE) at its Swedish Data Centre and has further objectives and targets to achieve a PUE rating of 1.6 across all of its UK data centre facilities when fully occupied.
Other current initiatives include the use of ‘borrowed’ daylight and energy-efficient lighting, highly efficient computer room air conditioning (CRAC) units, operating in economiser mode for air handling equipment and working with green power providers locally.
Additionally, SunGard is a member of the US Green Building Council and has used Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accredited design professionals in the
development of its facilities.
It should be noted that many of our customer’s servers range in age and energy performance which has a significant influence on the amount of energy used to power and cool SunGard data centres. Obviously a data centre built to the same building standards as SunGard’s which contains standardised, new energy performance servers may well achieve a lower PUE rating. Furthermore, data centre energy performance in cooler parts of the UK may well exceed those which are in areas where the prevailing climate is generally warmer.
GOVERNANCE
SunGard has been keeping our customers’ mission critical people and information connected for five decades: providing live production support during system recoveries or by helping ensure business critical systems are safely managed 24/7 by ‘intelligent hands’. We understand that this ‘Information Availability’ – the process of protecting the flow of information into, through and from an organisation to prevent business interruption – is vital to ensuring that when they partner with SunGard, our customers can make the everyday happen for theirs.
SunGard’s responsible attitude to computing helps protect our customers’ profits, operations, client bases and reputations, supporting the sustainability of their organisations in the broadest sense. We also help them to take advantage of our considerable investment in infrastructure and by doing so our customers may benefit from both our environmental initiatives and services innovations.
It is this provenance and desires to offer the best in Information Availability service provision that informs our customer interactions and the various governances we have in place to always conduct our business in a professional, ethical and appropriate way.
Business Continuity and Risk Management
All SunGard Availability Services locations have business continuity management programmes, and due to the nature of our SunGard National Network can rollback to alternative premises in the UK should any office be rendered unavailable. Our head office and Workplace Recovery facilities are formally accredited to BS 25999-2:2007 the British Standard for Business Continuity Management for its core business continuity management programme (as mentioned above). SunGard was one of the first UK organisations to achieve the internationally respected ‘kite mark’ for this Standard.
21 of 22
SunGard worked closely with the British Standards Institute, along with other leading
organisations such as Intellect and the Business Continuity Institute to develop BS 25999 and is committed to working with all UK customers to help them to embed it into their own BC plans. SunGard has also been involved on a similar basis with BS 25777, the Standard for IT Disaster Recovery.
Investment & Innovation
In 2010 alone, SunGard set $45.7 million of capital expenditure aside for further improvement of SunGard’s European infrastructure and services to enhance existing operations, to launch new facilities and services. Although this benefited the business overall, key targets were:
Infrastructure:
• Technology Centres
• Cloud Computing
• Hosting 365, Ireland acquired
• SunGard AS India
• UK desktop technology refresh. Services:
• Replication as a Service
• Continuity Management Solution
• Recover Anywhere.
These investments address sustainability in two ways: one being the investment in ‘greener’ operations and services as mentioned in the ‘environmental’ section above; the other being the continued expansion of our presence so that customers can protect their organisations against downtime and its resultant detrimental effects upon their own customers, staff and stakeholders.
