uring our 18 years in operation, Art Works Art School has evolved and expanded its services to facilitate students of all ages, offering some of the finest and most varied art programs in the city. our new home and location has allowed us to create many exciting possibilities for our students such as exhibition opportunities in our Gallery, access to the Frank hoff Art library for research purposes, and proposals for artist-in-residence independent

studio development. volunteer opportunities are encouraged and available to high school, university and college students through our ongoing Mentoring Program. Art Works Art School extends its support to post-secondary art and design students at oCAd university by awarding two $1000 scholarships to 3rd year students. Services to our community include events hosting, open houses, family days, workshops, and we sell retail art supplies and instruction books to the public. Through our outreach Program, Art Works Art School expands its teaching capabilities to include both the public and private school communities by offering structured, integrated and diverse on-site art classes and workshops. All of our educators are fully qualified professionals with extensive experience and knowledge in their chosen discipline.

Please join us on Sunday, november 23, 2014, from 2-4 pm, award ceremony at 2:30 pm, as we proudly celebrate our 18th Annual open house and Student Awards Ceremony. There will also be an exhibition of student art work, a free drop-in Family Sunday and refreshments served.

We look forward to many more successful years of service in our community through dedication and commitment to excellence and growth.

art Works art School

Art Works Art School is a community based art school whose mandate is to introduce adults, teens and children to the enriching world of art in a positive, creative and healthy environment. Art Works Art School is located in the baby Point Gates biA district of Toronto, four blocks north of the Jane Subway Station between bloor and Annette Streets, bloor West village and The Junction. Parking is available on Jane Street and neighboring side streets. Art Works Art School also houses the Frank hoff library (a resource library), Art Works Art Gallery, and Art Works Art Store, where you can purchase retail art supplies. Adult Programmes offer a variety of painting and drawing classes for the beginner as well as the more experienced artist in a supportive and structured environment. Teen Programmes focus on developing technique and encouraging confidence with the medium of choice. Several of our programs focus on portfolio preparation for high school, college and university for ages 11 – 16 years.

Children’s Programmes provide art instruction for children aged

3-12 years with special emphasis on the development of visual awareness, elements of art and design, personal expression, confidence in problem solving, improved self-esteem, imagination and comfort with materials. March Break and Summer Camps We have both half day and full day programs available. March break 2015 corresponds with the TdSb/TCdSb holiday schedule and runs March 16-20, 2015 inclusive. independent school dates are corresponding. Camp ages for March break are for 3-6, 6-9 and 8-12 years. (For summer camp information, please refer to our Summer Camp Calendar.) our instructors are all qualified teachers who receive enthusiastic reviews from their students. We consistently have more than ½ of our classes filled with returning students. in addition to long term courses, Art Works seeks to involve the community through a range of art related activities, family days, lectures, workshops, art clubs, exhibitions and open houses. Volunteer Opportunities are available for high school students needing their community service hours, coop students, internships and graduates seeking to gain experience before teachers college. We offer a wide range and level of opportunities as technicians, teaching assistants, gallery assistants and administrative assistants. refer to our web site for more information.

if your child is between the ages of 4-16 years, you can choose from this wide range of art activities: drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture. For the younger child, we offer new activities: making costumes, African bean mask, paper airplane and target, puppet theatre with puppets, painting on acetate, cartoon cell painting, painted diorama with plasticine figure, plaster carving and painting, and wire sculpture. For the older pre-teen and teen we adapt some of the above activities and also offer, silkscreen printing, plaster gauze sculpture, masks or an introductory class in painting a still life or portrait in either watercolour or acrylic.

We provide 15 invitations, an inviting decorated food room (complete with streamers, non-helium balloons, tables, chairs and table cloths) as well as a fully stocked art room. you provide the food, (don’t forget cups, plates, cutlery etc.) cake and guests. The participants come away with a great activity that they have made! Save yourself some time, we can offer you

ready made loot bags! our loot bags are a healthy, sugar free alternative that lasts. inspires making and creativity! no candy, no noise makers, no junk! loot bags range from $5, $10, $15 and $20 options. this includes art materials, a nifty bag, hSt, with room for your activity and a balloon. refer to web site for details on the 7 options we have!

Children and Teen party maximum is 16 participants (including birthday child and siblings), there is no minimum!

For Adult parties, corporate functions, or team building events we offer an array of workshops from: introductory classes in drawing or painting a still life, abstract painting, painting to music, printmaking, or sculpting with clay and plaster or wire. your suggestions are also welcome. We will provide all art materials, an instructor and the space, you provide the food. our space can hold as many as 25 participants comfortably. events can be 2 or more hours in length and can take place on Monday from either 10am-1pm, 1-4pm or from 4-7pm or 7-10pm on Saturday or Sunday.

Fee Starting at $750.00 +HST

(a basic 3 hour workshop with materials we have on hand for up to 16 adults)

Cancellation policy on Special events and birthdays:

no refunds will be given 7 days prior the party date. A refund will be given minus a $100 service charge 8 days or more prior to the party date. in extenuating circumstance we may be able to rebook the event, given more than a week’s notice. loot bags are non-refundable.

Students are introduced to the egg tempera medium,

parchment, gilding, and application gold leaf with hands-on experience recreating a page from a medieval manuscript of choice. no experience necessary, all levels welcome.

The student will learn about iconography, prepare a gesso panel, etch the design with a stylus and prepare their own paint while they learn about pigments. no experience necessary, all levels welcome.

Gilding: Jan 14 to Feb 4

learn about the “language of light”, the practice and symbolism. The preparation of gold leaf paint and “shell gold” will be demonstrated. learn how to use traditional gilding tools and how to make some of your own. recipes for compo will be given (a modeling paste) and experiment making a frame or other ornaments. no experience necessary, all levels welcome.

Master Drawing Tools & Materials: Feb 11 to Mar 4

Students learn about the glazing techniques and various resins innovated by the Flemish masters to give their paintings luminosity and the famous “jewel-like” quality that identifies Flemish painting. Try your hand at developing an underpainting, and how to turn raw materials into paints.

Fresco Arts: April 15 to May 6

high renaissance fresco painting can easily be adapted to contemporary projects such as images for a wine cellar or neighbourhood restaurant. Cartoons, transfer, pigments,

Proper handling of materials emphasized while encouraging use of new found art vocabulary and enhanced problem solving skills. Media includes drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, and sculpture with new projects each week and new themes each term to accommodate return students. in addition to completing art projects, the program includes warm up exercises and relevant and engaging storytelling during snack time.

MiXed MediA (5-9 yrs)

Time: 4-6 pm Fee: $269 instructor: Lauren McKinley Renzetti This class is ideal for the young student interested in the exploration and experimentation of different materials with exposure to artists and art styles through history. We’ll cover drawing, design, painting and sculpture with an additional focus on experimentation in printmaking and each term we’ll learn a new technique; relief, monoprints, silkscreen and collagraphs. Some projects use a combination of materials and techniques to create a mixed media finished work. There will be new themes each term to accommodate returning students.

Time: 4-6 pm Fee: $269 instructor: Moujan Nazmi-Ansari Working from a variety of subjects, students will develop their studio skills with an emphasis on traditional approaches to drawing and painting. Fundamentals in drawing will include gesture, contour, composition, tonal values, and perspective and through painting students will learn colour mixing, application and descriptive use of colour. This technique based program will inspire young artists and give them the tools needed to enhance their learning in art.

Junior portfolio buildinG for Art &

deSiGn (11-14 yrs)

Time: 4-7 pm Fee: $339 instructor: Marija Barac-Jandric A combination of traditional as well as experimental materials and techniques will be used to help the student develop challenging and engaging works required for art and design portfolios. This course covers drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking and 3d design with an emphasis on observation, concept building and practicing the formal elements of art and design. exploration of work by contemporary artists is included and discussion and presentation of student work encouraged. At the end of this course students should feel more confident in their ability to express themselves through art and language. This course covers all portfolio requirements for application to Secondary School regional Arts Programs. A trip to the Art Gallery of ontario is planned for the Spring term.

This heritage language program takes a creative approach to teaching Mandarin with language instruction supported by art projects involving different mediums and techniques. Students will learn to read, write and speak Mandarin while they explore the world of art making. drawing, painting, sculpture, mixed media and design assignments will complement and guide students through their language instruction with a cultural component focused on art history.

deSiGn (14-17 yrs)

Time: 4-7 pm Fee: $339 instructor: Marija Barac-Jandric use this class to further your studies in either art or design while exploring cutting edge projects. Students work in all mediums including drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking and 3d design. discussion and presentation of student work will be encouraged. examination and discussion of art work from major art movements will be ongoing. instruction in art history will be covered in the context of studio work. This course covers all portfolio requirements for application to university or College. Students must successfully complete 3 terms (Fall/Winter/Spring) to receive their AWAS Fine Arts Certificate.

SCulpture ArtS (5-9 yrs)

Time: 4-6 pm Fee: $269 instructor: Lauren McKinley Renzetti This program introduces students to the inspiring world of sculpture with an emphasis on tools and technique, and traditional practices. Projects will include assemblage with wood and found materials, kinetic wire mobiles, cardboard constructions and stabiles, plaster or soap carving, casting from clay into plaster and mosaic. learn additive and subtractive sculpture techniques with work inspired by brancusi, Calder, Gaudi, Moore, nevelson, oldenburg and Picasso.

Time: 10:30-12:30 pm Fee: $269 instructor: Olga Lysenko This innovative skill-building studio program will introduce students to drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media. We’ll work with pastel, watercolour, acrylic paint, clay, plaster and some unconventional materials. Projects will be based on artworks from different time periods, styles and cultures. The objective is to infuse the study of forms, themes and materials with a sense of play, curiosity and personal interpretation. in addition to art-making techniques, this course develops visual thinking strategies, as children observe, infer and draw conclusions, while grounding their ideas in evidence and experience.

AniMe ACtion (7-11 yrs)

Time: 10:30-12:30 pm Fee: $269 instructor: Mike Goodge Anime Action is a manga influence program inspired by the work of hayao Miyazaki animation and popular graphic novels. Students will develop their illustration skills through a range of lessons to include facial expressions and features, movement and speed lines, panel break-outs, two tone colouring, cultural interpretation, ¾ point of view and more. This is a perfect class for students that love cartooning and want to learn more through the dynamic world of Anime Action!

Traditional as well as experimental materials and techniques will be used to help the student develop challenging and engaging works required for art and design portfolios. This course covers drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking and 3d design with an emphasis on observation, concept building and practicing the formal elements of art and design. exploration of work by contemporary artists is included and discussion and presentation of student work encouraged. At the end of this course students should feel more confident in their ability to express themselves through art and language. This course covers all portfolio requirements for application to Secondary School regional Arts Programs.

Movie MAKinG And neW MediA (7-11 yrs)

An inspiring program to enhance creative learning through the exciting world of new media; students will become active participants as they produce, direct and act in their own movies, create, pitch and advertise their products and plan their own travelogue to a real or imagined destination. new production opportunities with accompanying art forms offered each term.

FALL: Moving Making; concept, story board, characters, camera

shots, location, and creation of a short movie. WINTER: Advertise your Creation; design, pitch, advertise your product, create your own ads and commercial. SPRING: Travelogue; design your destination, brochure, image design, narrate your film, shoot your travelogue.

reGiStrAtion inforMAtion

for a class or camp:

PROCEDURE: Registration can be made by mail (using the form in the brochure);

in person at the school; by telephone, fax or on-line. YOUR REGISTRATION IS VALID

ONCE FULL PAYMENT IS MADE AND PROCESSED. We issue receipts via email.

Payment can be made either by cash, cheque, debit, VISA, Master Card or American Express. Registrations are on a first-come first-served basis as soon as term schedules are available. We do not prorate camps. Adult classes are limited by the size of studio. Teens

and children’s classes are limited to 18 students per class, with the exception of Kinder Kids which is limited to 12 and Free to Be Three which is limited to 6. Your payment of the registered art class will assure you of your place in the class. Classes may be postponed due to enrolment numbers, please call the school to confirm start date. We do not call students if a class is running, only in the event of postponing or cancelling a class.

DISCOUNTS: A 10% discount fee is given for the second child or teen’s course in

the same family by a sibling or by the same child if registered in the same term. This

discount is not applicable to adult classes, birthdays or to camps. Seniors (65

years or older) receive a 10% discount for classes they take, upon presentation of identification.

CLASS CANCELLATIONS: Students may cancel their registration without charge up to

14 calendar days prior to course start date with the exception of a 6% cancellation fee for credit card refunds which will immediately apply. Notice of cancellation must be given to the school’s office in writing. Absence from class does not constitute

notice of cancellation. Students who wish to withdraw 13 calendar days or less prior to class will be charged a cancellation fee of $70.00. Students cancelling registration after the first class will be charged for that class plus the cancellation

fee of $70.00. No refunds or credits will be given after the second class. Art Works Art School reserves the right to postpone classes, dependent upon numbers. Should the school need to cancel a course due to low enrollment, all students will be notified in advance, and full refunds issued.

CAMP CANCELLATIONS: No refunds will be given once camp begins. A $70.00

cancellation fee will be charged to any cancellations 13 calendars days prior to camp commencement.

STUDENT ABSENCES: The school cannot be responsible for classes missed by

students. However, in certain cases students who miss a class may obtain their instructor’s permission to attend a different class given by that same instructor on another day of the week. The substitution must be made in the same term as the missed class. This policy does not apply to camps.

MATERIALS: Art Works Art School supplies materials for children, teen and some

adult programmes. Adults are responsible for supplying their own materials unless they are in a class where materials are supplied by the school. Materials and costs will be discussed at the beginning of the first class. We sell all supplies needed for classes at a reasonable price.

DOCUMENTATION: Art Works Art School reserves the right to use photographic

material for advertising and promotional purposes. If you do not want your child, yourself or other family members photographed, please let us know in writing.

BEHAVIORAL POLICY: At Art Works Art School our motto is “Behave Your Best and

Dress Your Worst!” Students should conduct themselves in a respectful manner with both fellow students and teachers alike. No verbal or physical abuse will be tolerated. Students are asked to respect the work and space of other students as well as the studio environment in general. Care and caution should be used when handling all tools, equipment, and materials used in the making of projects. Hand washing before and after snack is expected of all students.

DRESS POLICY: Students are asked to dress informally with casual, loose, and

comfortable clothing. Any type of dress that will restrict the student from fully engaging in the art making process should not be worn in the studio. Smocks are provided for each student, but there will inevitably be times when a smock may not protect the entire body from paints, printing inks, and other materials that may stain clothing. Please use common sense when dressing for art class. No bare feet! Shoes, sandals or boots should be worn at all times.
