Identifying File Types

1. Data Files – Data files are the files you create

when you work with an application program such as a word processing program or a

spreadsheet program, or files that you

download from a digital camera or scan into the computer using a scanner. These files are stored in your User area, in folders called

Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos. 2. Application Files – Files which are the

programs themselves,

3. System Files – Files which are files necessary to support the operating system and the

application files. Some of the system files are hidden, even if you have access to the area in which they are stored.

To Create Folders, Change the View,

and Sort Files

1. Click the Start button, and then click Computer. In the title bar, click the Maximize button.

2. Plug your flash drive into a USB port. Some flash drives cause the AutoPlay window to open with default Win 7 settings. You will need to close that window if necessary. 3. In the Navigation pane, click the flash drive icon – your

flash drive will have a different name and drive letter from the one shown in the figures. Point to the flash drive and to the left of the flash drive name, click the triangle. Some flash drives may have two icons.

5. In the Navigation pane, navigate to the location of your student files for this chapter.

6. Click any one of the files, and then on the toolbar, click the Organize button. From the menu, click

Select All to select all of the files. Press Control + C

to copy all the files to your Clipboard.

7. In the Navigation pane, navigate to and click the

Chapter01 folder you just created. In the empty file list, right-click, and then click Paste.

8. On the toolbar, click the Change your view button arrow, and from the menu, click Large icons.

9. On the toolbar, click the Change your view button arrow, and from the menu, click Extra Large icons. 10.On the toolbar, click the Change your view button

arrow, and from the menu, click Details.

11.In the file list, right-click the Name heading at the top of the column of files. If there is not a check mark next to Size, click Size. Use the same

procedure to add Date Modified and Type columns. 12.In the file list, click the Size column heading, and

13.In the file list, click the Size column heading again, and notice that the files are sorted from smallest to largest. 14.In the file list, click the Type column heading, and notice

that the files are sorted by file type.

15.Use the skills you practiced previously to start the

Snipping Tool and create a Full-screen snip of the screen. Save a copy of this snip to the folder where you store

your files. Name the file U1Ch01TypeStudentName, substituting your name as indicated.

16.Close the Snipping Tool mark-up window. Then, in the file list, click the Name column heading to sort the files by

name. Leave the computer window open for the next exercise. Submit your snip as directed.

To Create, Copy, Rename, Move, and

Delete a Folder

1. In the Navigation pane, locate and right-click your Chapter01 folder. From the shortcut menu, point to New, and click Folder. Type LSS Pictures and press Enter.

2. Use the same procedure to create three more folders called “Energy, Movies, and Letters” in the Chapter01 folder.

3. In the file list, click the Name column header as

necessary to move the folders to the top of the list. 4. If the Details pane does not display at the top of the

5. In the file list, right-click the Movies folder, and then from the shortcut menu, click Copy. In the file list, right-click anywhere, and click Paste to create a copy of the folder. Click the Name

header as necessary to move the new folder to the top of the list with the other folders.

6. In the file list, right-click the Movies – Copy folder, then from the shortcut menu, click Rename. Type Vacation and press Enter.

7. In the file list, move the pointer to the Vacation folder. Drag the Vacation folder over the Movies folder and notice the ScreenTip.

8. Release the mouse button to finalize the folder move. Move the pointer to the Navigation pane, and then point to the Movies folder. Click the

triangle, if necessary, to display the subfolder. 9. In either the Navigation pane or the file list,

click the Chapter01 folder, and then right-click the Letters folder. From the shortcut menu,

click Delete. When asked to confirm the Delete, click Yes.

1. In the Navigation pane, be sure the Chapter01 folder is selected. In the file list, click the first file with a name beginning LSS. Move the

pointer down to the last file with a name

beginning with LSS, hold down Shift, and click the file.

2. Move the pointer anywhere over the selected files, and drag them to the left to the LSS

Pictures folder in the Navigation pane.

3. In the file list, click the Hydro Power Excel file. Hold down Ctrl, and click the Solar Data, Water Heater, and Wind Data Excel files.

4. Drag the selected files to the Energy folder. 5. In the file list, right-click the Letterhead file,

and then from the shortcut menu, click Copy.

Right-click the Energy folder, and then from the shortcut menu, click Paste.

6. In the file list, double-click the Energy folder. 7. Use the skills you practiced previously to start

the Snipping Tool and create a Full-screen snip of the screen. Save a copy of this snip to the

folder where you store your files. Name the file U1CH01PropertiesStudentName, substituting

8. Right-click the Letterhead file, and then from the shortcut menu, click Properties.

9. Close the Properties dialog box. Click your flash drive or other storage device, and notice the

path that is displayed in your address bar.

10.In the address bar, click the arrow to the right of your flash drive.

11.Click anywhere in the window to close the

menu. Submit your snip as directed, and leave the computer window open for the next lesson.

To Search for Files and Folders

1. In the Navigation pane, click the Chapter01 folder. On the toolbar, click the View button, and then click Details. Near the upper right

corner of the computer window, in the Search box, type LSS and watch the file list.

2. On the right side of the Search box, click the Close button.

3. In the Search box, type st and watch the file list.

4. At the bottom of the search results, click the File Contents button.

5. In the Search box, type jpg and watch the file list.

6. Move the pointer to the line between the Name column heading and the Date Modified column heading until the pointer displays. Double-click the line and notice that the column width is expanded to display the longest

filename. Widen the folder column.

7. Double-click the line at the right side of the Type and Size columns to reduce their width, and then use the

skills you practiced previously to start the Snipping Tool and create a Full-screen snip of the screen. Save a copy of this snip to the folder where you store your files.

8. In the Navigation pane, locate and click the Chapter01 folder to close the search. Submit the snip as directed. Leave the computer

window open for the next lesson.

Copies should be made of important files at regular intervals to removable storage media.

o If file is a text document, open file with a simple

text editor program, like WordPad.

o If file is password protected, obtain password from
