“How do you hold a class focusing on learning to read and write your language if it is not safe to move around your village? Or if there are restrictions on gathering on account of Covid-19? Whatsap! For some time now, there have been literacy classes that are held remotely. Over 100 people in/from Bambalang have been learning to read and write in classes that they attend over their phone. The reading materials have been made available as an app, and people download them with their phones. With whatsap, they have been able to listen to the teacher as he teaches the lesson, respond, ask questions, and participate as they would if they were face to face. They are able to do the work for each lesson, take a photo of their answers, and send that to the teacher. Whenever a literacy class finishes going through the transition primer, they have a written and oral test. If they pass, they are given a certificate.
A group of seven people (all 50 years and older) from Bambalang, who are now living outside the village, wanted to learn to read and write Chrambo. Their formal education had all been in English. All of them are retired. Most joined the class when it began, but our former landlord, once he
heard of the class, joined late and worked hard to catch up what he’d
missed and graduated with the rest of them.
A few Saturdays ago, Dan and I had the privilege of attending the
graduation of this Chrambo literacy class. These people have eagerly met, at first daily and then three days a week, to hold their classes. Several different teachers in the village shared the responsibility of teaching the group. For the graduation, we met as a zoom group, which allows each person to be seen and to see everyone else. This was different than their whatsap class, when they were just hearing each other. There were 31 different computer screens joining the zoom group, some with one person, some a couple, and some larger groups. It was fun to listen to everyone chatting as they joined the group, seeing family and friends they have not been with for a long time. Even the Fon (king) of the village was with us, which was a great honour. Just like any graduation, we had an MC leading the event. Pastor Pius shared a devotional of encouragement from
Revelation, reading from the Chrambo New Testament. Speeches were given (most in Chrambo, though mine was in English), songs were sung, village proverbs were shared, a lady read a poem she had written, and then the results of their tests were shared—all seven had passed. Everyone clapped and cheered.”
