JACKSON IS DEAD. Nashville, Tcnu., August 8. Justice Jackson ofthe United States supreme courtis dead.

Mr.Jackson died at his residence at West Meade, six miles west of this city this afternoon,in the C4th year of his age, of consumption. He had been failing in hoalth the past four years,

but

it has been only during the past eight months that the progress of

dis-eus-begun to cause uneasiuoss. Last yearhe went on a longthy trip to the farwest in search ofhealth. Heseemed toimprove slightly until he went to Washington to siton thesecond hearing of theincome tax case. He stood that trip fairly well,

but

after his return

to lose strongth rapidly.

Never-thelesshe never took tohis bed till lust Wednesday week. Since that time tho family and friends feared the end whs near atid his deuth todaywas not unex pected.

Jackson was twice married, the first time to Miss Sophia Mallory, daughter of David B. MaKcry, a bankerof

Mem-phis,who died in 187). To this union wore born three children,as follows: Henry,William R.andHowell Jackson. Henry issoliciting freight agent of tho Southern railway with headqurters at Atlanta. W. R. is district attorney of

the Chesapeake& Ohio, in Cincinnati. Howell ismanager of the cotton mills at Jackson, Trim.

In 1870Judge Jackson mnrried Miss Mary E.Harding, daughter of General William G. Harding. Of this union threo children survive. Misses Eliza-beth and Louise Jackeou and Harding A. Jackson. With the exception of Elizabeth and William, who are in Europe, the children were at the

bed-sid-when the sufforor pneBed away. News of hisdeath caused general

sor-row in thiscity whero he was so well known and admired.

Arrangomeuts for tha funeral have not been completad, but it will take plnoe next Sunday.

Howell Edmunds Jacksonwas born in Paris, Tenn., April 8, 1832. He was a

classical scholar, graduating from West Tennossoe college in 188. He studied law two years at the University of

Vir-ginia andinJackson under his kinsmen, Judgo A. W. O. Totten and Milton Brown. He graduated from Lebanon law school in 185G, in which year he locatedinJackson and engaged in tho practice of his profession. He removed to Memphis in 185!) where he continued

practico of law. Ho served on tho supremo beuch by appointment on two occasions and was onco a prominent candidate for supremo judge before tho nominating convention, located in Jackson, in 187G.

Jackson whselocted to the statehouso of representatives in 18S0 on a state credit platform. Hewas eloetcd tothe United States senate as a democrat in

1881 andserved till April VI 188G. Ho

was appointed United States circuit judgo byI'iesident Cleveland and
