Overview

Tuckahoe Common School District provides each student (grades 5-8) with an individual electronic mail (mail) account which will log them into the Office 365 Suite; a cloud based system which allows for e-mail, instant messaging, group video, voice chat and real time collaboration on assignments and group projects. This service also offers web-apps which allow students with an internet connection the ability to work on their school documents from any computer around the world.

Electronic Mail:

Each student is provided an email address associated with the school districts Office 365 account. Secure passwords are set by individual students and must be reset by the technology department if forgotten. No other e-mail account (g-mail, Hotmail, yahoo, etc.) should be accessed utilizing the mobile device provided to the student from Tuckahoe Common School District or within the school building. Students should:

 Always use appropriate language in communications.

 Not transmit language, materials that are profane, obscene, abusive or offensive to others.  Not transmit mass e-mails, chain letters or spam.

 Maintain high integrity with regard to email content.

 Not access another student’s email account. This will result in disciplinary actions in accordance to the Tuckahoe Common School District Student Handbook.

Instant Messaging/Video Chat/Voice Chat:

Students have the opportunity to collaborate with classmates, teachers and other educational leaders through instant messaging, video chat and voice chat. These features are to be used for appropriate school coursework, and parents/guardians need to be active monitors of their student’s actions utilizing these services within the home.

Students should:

 Always use appropriate language in communications.

 Not utilize these features for inappropriate actions, or use language that is profane, obscene, abusive or offensive to others.

 Maintain high integrity with regard to utilizing these communication tools.

Class Documents:

Teachers each have a class folder in which they can share documents with the students in their class. These documents can be viewed by the students and saved to their OneDrive folder as reference or to complete and turn in as an assignment. Students do not have the ability to change these files, and should not attempt to alter any file located within the classroom folder in a malicious way. Any student who is found to have altered a document from the classroom folder will face disciplinary actions in accordance with the Tuckahoe Common School District Student Handbook.

Filters & Journaling:

Filters allow the school district to monitor student activities within the system to block inappropriate actions before they happen. This system will immediately notify the system administrators of the actions of the student, including but not limited to, the sender, the receiver and the content of the message. Students who have been deemed to violate the Tuckahoe Common School District Student Handbook will result in disciplinary actions in accordance to the handbook.

The filter will not stop all inappropriate actions and the Tuckahoe Common School District “journals” all interactions within the electronic mail system. This email will be used by the district administration, local, state and federal authorities in case of illegal activities such as but not limited to bullying, threats of any kind, obscene, profane or abusive language, references to drugs or alcohol or other inappropriate activities or actions outside of the intended use; educational coursework.

Students should understand that NO ELECTRONIC TRANSMISSIONS ARE DEEMED PRIVATE and the school district reserves the right to monitor any communication as they see fit to maintain the integrity of the system as an educational tool.
