An Affiliate of the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA)

The Foundation for Quality Care, the research and education affiliate of the

New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State

Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL), is pleased to announce the Assisted

Living Leadership Program for LPNs and RNs working in NYC, Nassau, Suffolk,

Rockland, Westchester, Orange, Putnam, Dutchess, Ulster, Sullivan, Delaware

and Columbia counties.

This program is funded by a grant from the New York State Dept. of Health

and Dept. of Labor Health Workforce Retraining Initiative.

A brochure and program information sheet are enclosed, outlining the course

content, eligibility criteria, dates, times and location. Along with this

information is a participant application form, which must be completed and

returned with the required supporting documentation

prior to Friday, February 26, 2016.

This Assisted Living Leadership program can accommodate 15 nurses. Given our past experience, we expect the

number of applications will far exceed the number of available openings. We encourage applicants to apply early.

The selection criteria will be based on: education, experience, applicant’s letter of interest describing how this

program will enhance professional development and a letter of support from the sponsoring facility Administrator,

noting the applicant will be able to attend all sessions. The timeliness and completeness of the submitted

application and the number of applicants from a single facility will also be considered.

More than one applicant from a facility may apply. If more than one applicant applies from a facility, the

Administrator should prioritize applicants for possible selection.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Shelley Wagar Sabo by phone at 518-462-4800, Ext. 17 or by

email at ssabo@nyscal.org

Sincerely,

program overview

This four-day course serves the nurse leader in the assisted living community to enhance the quality of care and life for both the residents and the staff. Research has demonstrated that communities with successful nurse leaders, who manage daily operations and staff with critical leadership skills such as effective communication, conflict management and resolution, coaching and mentoring skills, have both highly satisfied residents and staff and lower employee turnover.

Assisted living nurse leaders serve as the critical link that connect the staff, residents, family members and community resources to consistently provide quality care to the residents they serve. This program combines multiple teaching methods including classroom lecture, interactive discussion and small group exercises.

It is the expectation that if selected, the applicant will attend all four, full-day sessions.
