INVENTORYING GREEN SPACES IN CRAIOVA

ABSTRACT

One of the cities problems is the degradation and diminishing of existing planted

areas. Craiova, located approximately in the center of Oltenia, in the county of Dolj

contains the largest number of people, and for every inhabitant has to be provided a

minimum of 40 sqm / inhabitant planted area.

It is not impossible if the new general urban plans would have provided a controlled

expansion of built-up areas and building land areas planted in 1990 were still open at the

edge of cities. During our research we have inventoried Craiova most of the green areas ,

based on the inventory records from the City Hall.

INTRODUCTION

Craiova, residence of The Dolj county is the 6th city in Romania, after the number of

inhabitants and is located in the south of the country, 44

longitude. Area on which is placed Craiova is a creation of Jiu river located on its left bank

Craiova is situated on a well-defined and delimited aisle landforms with altitude between

70-75 m in the floodplain and 140-150 m on the level of high terrace.

The city is bordered on the west by Bucovăţ Hill (165 m), Cârligei Hill (160 m) and

Drumul Mare Hill (150.5 m) and on the east by Viilor Hill (209.5 m), Mlecăneştilor Hill

(203.5 m) Hill and Carcea Hill (191.5 m).

Approximate area of Craiova is 150-160 km

, integrating them into the territorial and

administrative the localities Popoveni, Mofleni, Rovine,

Izvorul Rece and Şimnicul de Jos,

as population Craiova has approximative 320 thousand inhabitants.

MATERIAL AND METHOD

During our research we have inventoried Craiova most of the green areas (parks,

public gardens, squares, green areas), based on the inventory records from the City hall.

As is known in Romania, where cities have grown in the past 50 years, more on vertical on

limited areas, densities are relatively high in the built-up areas, returning generally an area

of 125-150 square meters of land/inhabitant .

Under these conditions we can see that the area planted to ensure a minimum of 40

square meters/inhabitant becomes a difficult goal to achieve, but not impossible, if the new

general urban plans would have provided a controlled expansion of built-up areas and

building land planted areas which in 1990 were still available in the town.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

The following tables present the main unit Green Area Craiova, as set out in the

inventory list of the Craiova City Hall.

The growing number of people (45579 - 1899, 54244-1912), also of the cars pollution in

general, needs to improve urban area have become increasingly stringent for a clean

environment.

CONCLUSIONS

From the green spaces of Craiova situation presented in the tables above, it

appears that the total area of green spaces of Craiova of 2.811.801 m

2

are occupied by

parks 1.84 million m

2

, 375.986 m

2

of gardens, squares 88.485 m

2

and 525.330 m

2

of green

areas (Fig. 1).

There are 4 Parks in Craiova with a total area of 1.84 million m

2

of which the largest

is Romanescu N. Park with an area of 940.000 m

2

, and the smallest surface is the Hanul

Doctorului Park with 160.000 m

2

. It is said that Corniţoiu Park with an area of 200.000 m

2

of which part was returned to owners and current area it is uncertain (Fig. 2).

The gardens from Craiova are 16 with a total area of 357.986 m

2

. Thus the largest

botanical garden area extends to 165.550 m

2

, and the smallest garden Bibescu with 2500

m

(Fig. 3).
