INTRODUCTION

Van Leeuwen Test Systems B.V., shortly known as VLT, has a track record of over 57 years and is today one of the few companies which supplies State of the Art Vehicle Testing Equipment combined in fully integrated Test Lanes. These Test Lanes have a high level of Computer Automation, including Vehicle Tracking Systems, with a capacity of 20 to 25 vehicles or even more per Test Lane per hour with half the number of inspectors. VLT has automated everything as much as possible, even the visual inspection. Above and Under Carriage are fully computer guided with less human influence and this means less errors by inspectors. WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT WHEN SELECTING VEHICLE TEST LANE SYSTEMS?

1. Try to make a calculation of estimates on the number of Vehicles that need to be tested during your standard working day, by Category: Cars and Light Goods Vehicles – Buses, Heavy Goods Vehicles and Trailers – Motor Cycles, Trikes and Quads. With this information you are able to calculate the number of Lanes needed! VLT Car and Light Goods Lanes can handle approximately 35.000 to 40.000 Vehicles a year, Heavy and Combination Lanes approximately 20.000 to 30.000 Vehicles a year (depending on the length of the Lane), Motor Cycles more than 40.000 a year. Please note these numbers are applicable for VLT fully Automated Lanes.

2. Calculate the dimension of the Building, Office space – Test Lane(s) space and open area for lining up Vehicles and parking facilities. Do not forget parking area for your own staff and visitors, easy accessible when Station is busy.

3. SELECT EQUIPMENT DESIGNED FOR HIGH VOLUME USED DAY-IN DAY-OUT

Most workshop equipment will be not resistant for fulltime use and will Breakdown periodically due to wear, results in unexpected repair cost and down time.

4. Be sure your equipment needs low maintenance and seldom repairs.

5. Your supplier knows Vehicle Testing practise and looks for win – win situations.

6. DO NOT COUNT ONLY THE INITIAL INVESTMENT not the most important is the purchase price, but the maintenance and repair cost over an 8 to 10 year period or even longer.

VLT Roller Brake Testers have been designed for many years of low maintenance operation. This is not only reflected in the mechanical construction and software that can be upgraded when legal requirements change, but also in the high quality finish and components. All metal parts have been galvanised or powder coated. The rollers are coated

VLT ROLLER BRAKE TESTERS

for motorcycles and scooters

The VLT Roller Brake Testers for motorcycles can handle a maximum wheel weight of 750 kg, so more than enough for even the heaviest bike. They come with a 22”TFT/LCD monitor as standard.

Hydraulic clamping devices are available (option) to clamp the wheel that is not on the rollers.

Also a wheel clamping device is available that measures the alignment between the front and rear wheel.

The simplest stand-alone model will start a brake test automatically as soon as a wheel is detected on the rollers.

Models with wheel clamping devices have control boxes on pedestals, situated in easily reachable positions.

Pulling axle down with cylinders

VLT AXLE LOAD SIMULATORS AND AXLE LIFTS

Pull down the axle with hydraulic cylinders

VLT offers a range of three different Axle Load Simulators: 4000 kg - 6000 kg and 10000 kg pulling force by two dual action hydraulic cylinders. These three models can be offered with their own hydraulic pump or can be connected to our VLT 9054 PRC Play Detector pump unit, which in that case has an extra valve set for connecting one of the Load Simulators. A proportional pressure regulator valve is used for the load adjustment. The desired axle weight is controlled with the remote control unit of the Roller Brake Tester and displayed on the readout unit.

If you want to include the influence of the Load Sensing Valve of the vehicle in the test, then fit the chains/belts to the chassis.

If you don’t want to include the influence of the Load Sensing Valve in the test, then fit the chains/belts around the axle.

In case a vehicle needs to perform a brake test laden, one could consider to use a load simulator. In that case the vehicles can come to the brake test unladen; the load simulator will add the required load to the axles. Regarding axle load during a brake test the following. At air suspended tandem axles the weight usually reduces a great amount during the brake test carried out at one axle at a time. This weight loss and therefore brake force loss is not present when the test is carried out with opposite

rotating wheels. For this type of test the VLT brake testers contain a special automated start sequence. When using this the wheels rotate in opposite directions and after a stop the rollers start again in different directions in order to test the opposite forward rotating wheel. At the end of the axle test the brake force values of both forward rotating wheels are combined

The use of an axle lift without tightening down the chassis or axle

This is the fastest way for increasing the axle weight. There is no need to leave the driver seat after driving on the rollers for attaching belts or chains. From the driver seat with the remote control the weight can be increased and meanwhile read from the display or monitor. The weight can be increased until the other axles near the axle on the rollers are lifted from the ground.

The use of an axle lift including the tightening down of the chassis or axle.

In this way the axle load can be increased until its maximum permissible weight. For each axle however the belts or chains have to be fitted. Like with the pulling cylinders the belts or chains can be fitted to the axle or to the chassis. When fitting them to the chassis the load sensing system of the vehicle is taken into account during the brake test.

The VLT 16733 series Roller Brake Testers are in use with most UK VOSA inspection stations. Also well over 1500 machines are in use by private garages and work shops for performing the official M.O.T.

inspections. These Roller Brake

Testers can handle an axle weight of 16000

kg and have a measuring range of 0 - 4000 kgf. They

are equipped with an operating console with TFT monitor and indication lamps, and a large readout cabinet with large 16 digit LED display, 2 pointers and several indication lamps. A 32” TFT monitor is also available as an option.

The British Ministry of Defence (MOD) uses the VLT 20733/MOD series Roller Brake Testers exclusively around the world. This is a 20000 kg / 5000 kgf model with a readout cabinet with 4 pointers on a trolley. Also available as a 24000 kg / 6000 kgf model with extra long rollers.

Both series use the VOSA database to configure the brake tests for the different vehicles. This database is updated frequently, and currently holds over 15000 DTp numbers. Just enter the vehicle’s DTp number and the Roller Brake Tester is set to test the vehicle correctly.

VERRUN BRAKE SIMULATORS

VLT Overrun Brake Simulator VLT 2106 The ORIGINAL Caravan Roller Brake Simulator

The VLT Overrun Brake Simulator operates the brake mechanism on the coupling of the caravan. The simulator also holds the caravan in the roller sets of the Brake Tester. The mechanism in the Brake Simulator, which is activated by hand, causes force through the coupling device on the overrun brake.

This force is measured with a gauge and is displayed on the Monitor of the Roller Brake Tester. A simulator locking rail is an optional item. The Overrun Brake Simulator is available for both light and heavy Roller Brake Testers.

Model VLT 2106 needs a rail to be concreted into the workshop floor: VLT 2106-300 Rail of 3 meters

Mobile Overrun Brake Simulator VLT 2810

This Overrun Brake Simulator has the same purpose as the original model VLT 2106, but there is no need to install the floor rails anymore. It can handle light trailers with overrun brakes up to 3000 kg. The VLT 2810 will be hooked on between the pulling vehicle and the caravan / trailer. The caravan can be picked up by the simulator VLT 2810 from outside and bring the caravan and simulator up to the Roller Brake Tester, and after the tests are completed bring the caravan or trailer back to the outside / parking area.

Available for standard 50 mm ball coupling or for the open NATO military coupling, or a combination of both.

Connection between simulator and Roller Brake Tester is available by cable or by wireless Radio Frequency.

BRAKE DATA® SOFTWARE

Measuring and analysing brake test data is becoming a full days work for many technicians working in the automotive world. Storing of all this data is more and more common. Data which is required can be consulted or reprinted at all times. VLT Brake Data® is available in different modules for cars, light goods vehicles and buses. For these vehicles which mainly have no large difference in unladen and laden condition, VLT offers VLT Brake Data® Windows, a simple solution giving all the information you need. For those vehicles, which have a greater difference in unladen and laden weight, like heavy goods vehicles, trailers, etc., VLT Brake Data® Corridor Windows is available. This program measures the brake efficiency as tested normally unladen. The air pressure in the brake cylinder is measured at the locking point of the wheel brakes. The axle weight is stored and the computer makes the calculation from the measured values, still in unladen condition of the vehicle. But we also need to calculate the brake efficiency in laden condition without having the vehicle laden. This calculation is made by the computer by extrapolation of the air pressure value, usually up to 6.5 bar. At this point we calculate the relation between the air pressure at unladen weight in the brake cylinders at 6.5 bar.

The computer calculates the total available brake force divided by the gross vehicle weight. This is the total weight of the vehicle in fully laden condition. The outcome is the brake efficiency in percentage of the gross vehicle weight. Brake Data® Corridor Windows can do this per axle separately and for the sum of all the axles. The program has a number of so called ‘Corridors’, given by government authorities on vehicle manufacturing. The program also gives the engineer the possibility to create his own ‘Corridors’. In Europe we have a number of EU corridors and by selecting one of these corridors the program will draw up a graph automatically around these lines. This all means that the ’harmonization’ can be achieved far more easily, quickly and more accurately. If testing semi-trailers, the so called K-factor is automatically calculated and taken into account by the program. There is no other way to achieve this information in such a short time and in such an easy way.

VLT ROAD CONTACT / SUSPENSION TESTERS

The VLT Suspension Testers operate according to the well-known EUSAMA principle. However, the diagnostic options are not restricted to the contents of this specification. In addition to the usual road contact values, the following values are also measured and displayed: the contact value difference, resonance frequency and wheel weight at minimum contact value, tyre pressure value, wheel weight and axle weight. There is a general final evaluation so that all these values do not have to be interpreted after every test.

VLT also offers a Suspension Tester that goes beyond the EUSAMA measurement. It also measures phase shift, which gives more accurate results when testing vehicles with lower wheel weights or run-flat tyres. The motors are controlled by a frequency inverter.

As an option, the frequency of the moving plates can be manually set and adjusted at each value for finding annoying rattles in vehicles.

The VLT Suspension Testers can handle a drive-over axle weight of 4000 kg (max. test axle weight 2500 kg). If it is required to use one in a test lane for mixed vehicles (cars, vans, heavy weight vehicles) VLT offers motor-driven sliding protection plates that can be closed if a heavy vehicle has to drive over the Suspension Tester.

Positioning the wheels correctly on the Suspension Tester is made easy by visual instructions on the monitor.

VLT SUSPENSION / ROLLER BRAKE TESTER COMBINATIONS

The Suspension Tester can be used in combination with a VLT Roller

Brake Tester. The two pieces of equipment are controlled by the same controller. A single 22”TFT/LCD monitor is used. The axle weight measured by the Suspension Tester is also used for the calculation of the brake efficiencies. The Suspension Tester and Roller Brake Tester are placed in a single subframe.

A Side Slip Tester can also be included. This uses the same controller and monitor, but has its own subframe.

The user is guided through the entire testing process step by step. You can also skip tests if desired. At the end of the tests a complete test report can be printed.

VLT SIDE SLIP TESTERS

VLT offers Side Slip Testers for vehicles up to 5000 kg wheel weight and for vehicles up to 10000 kg wheel weight. They can be used as stand-alone equipment, in combination with a Roller Brake tester or Suspension Tester / Roller Brake Tester combination, or as part of a fully integrated Inspection lane.

The Side Slip Testers all have a measuring plate and a compensation plate. The compensation plate makes sure that there are no forces acting sideways on the wheel when it rolls onto the measuring plate. Both plates are coated with the special VLT grit.

The measuring range is 20 mm in both directions.

The Side Slip Testers can be equipped with switch bars that detect the wheel entering and leaving the measuring plate, and also help to assure a correct and clean measurement.

Also gritted counter plates are available for placing on the floor for the opposite wheel.

The results are displayed on a 22”TFT monitor. Speedometer Testers are available in TEST LANE or STAND-ALONE version.

The VLT 1885 (the 1000 kg version) and the VLT 3885 (the 3500 kg version) are available in a Taximeter Tester configuration. This means that an electric motor is driving the rollers, ensuring that the reading is very accurate (constant speed, less sound and no Emissions). All models are very robust and can be classified as top of the market, with high value for money, fitted with a fast hydraulic lifting system which locks the rollers when the lift is up. The 14000 kg version has an independent roller braking system. A hydraulic lifting system is more expensive than the common pneumatic system, but more powerful and more reliable, especially with heavy use of the Speedometer Tester. The Test Lane versions have a drive-in sensor device for full automatic use and for extra safety.

Available options include an aircon test, and for the software a taximeter test, speed limiter test and speed warning device test.

VLT HEADLIGHT BEAM TESTERS

VLT offers three versions of the advanced range of Headlight Beam Testers. VLT’s development department was inspired years back by the non-availability of a product which could meet its high quality standard, resulting in the development of an own range of VLT Headlight Beam Testers. The market shows its interest in the developed VLT Headlight Beam Testers.

VLT 0936/MK2 Test Lane Version

Fully digital computer controlled CCD Headlight Beam Tester, with fully automated vertical and horizontal movements, with automated searching of the hot spot of the beam. This robot type Headlight Beam Tester is connected to the Vehicle Test Lane Computer System and displays instructions and results on one of the large overhead TFT/LCD monitors of the Test Lane.

VLT 0938/MK2 Test Lane Version

Headlight Beam Tester with VLT’s patent pending vehicle position scanner system. This model has a fully digital computerized controlled CCD camera, has the same fully automated vertical and horizontal movements, including automated searching of the hot spot of the beam, as the VLT 0936/MK2

model, but also scans the vehicle and measures the centre line of the vehicle and compensates automatically if the angle is not the same. This all at a speed of at least 5 times faster than manually operated testing systems.

VLT 0939 Manual Model

Manual Headlight Beam Tester with the same measuring techniques as our fully automated models. This stand-alone model has its own small printer, including rechargeable battery pack and charger.

VLT, a world-wide specialist in the field of vehicle testing, has introduced

its Intelligent Test Lane Concept in 1994 and is continuously updating this concept, whereby Test Lanes are created for testing trucks, trailers, buses, cars and motor cycles.

The main features of Test Lanes created with this concept are:

• short testing times, thereby enabling a large throughput of vehicles; • objective, operator independent test results on most test items; • accurate measurements;
