Getting the correct connection is the key element of your school’s broadband provision. If you are not sure which connection is right for your school, our experienced consultants will be able to determine the best options available to you. We are able to provide connections from a number of approved providers including BT and Virgin Media, with connections up to 1000Mbps.

OIS Bonding Solution

The OIS enterprise bonding solution is used to bond multiple broadband lines together to

produce an otherwise unachievable broadband connection. The

bonding solution can be used on both fast (FTTC) and slower (ADSL etc) connections to create a single high performance and reliable Internet connection without the added expense of dedicated leased lines. Please see pages 9 and 10 for further information on the OIS enterprise bonding solution.

Private Education Network (PEN)

All of our Internet services and cloud products are delivered through the PEN. The PEN is provided across redundant UK data centres and is only available to educational establishments.

The security of every school or college connected to the PEN is constantly safeguarded by centrally managed, redundant Cisco firewalls which permits only known educational establishments to join the PEN. This enables us to provide the most secure, reliable and efficient service that is tailored specifically for our educational partners.

What is OIS Internet Bonding?

The OIS Internet Bonding solution involves having multiple broadband lines installed at your school and using specialist OIS bonding equipment to link them together.

The bonding equipment splits the Internet data up at a packet level, then sends it across all of your available broadband lines. The data is then put back together again using the core OIS bonding equipment within the PEN. The data is then sent to the Internet. This process occurs for both uploading and downloading Internet data.

Can my school benefit from Internet Bonding?

True Internet bonding is a cost effective, scalable Internet solution whether you are in a poorly connected broadband area or in a good one. Rural schools who struggle to obtain a high quality Internet connection from one line alone will benefit hugely from OIS Internet bonding. A faster Internet connection can allow access to resources like videos, podcasts, video conferencing and other online teaching resources previously impossible to use within the school.

A large number of schools in high quality broadband areas are also turning to an OIS bonding facility as an alternative to a leased line. A leased line can easily provide a 100Mbps symmetric Internet connection but typically costs tens of thousands of pounds per year in addition to a potentially large open ended installation fee for excess construction works. As an alternative to a leased line solution, a school could bond 4 or 5 FTTC lines to produce a 100Mbps+ connection at around 60% of the cost, with a low, fixed, installation fee.

In addition satellite, 3G, 4G, EFM and SDSL can also be bonded if required.

Why not Load

Balancing?

A number of providers advertise Internet bonding but are actually providing Internet load balancing. As shown in the load balancing diagram each user is only able to utilise the bandwidth of a single line.

While there are many great facilities provided via the Internet, unfortunately there are also websites and content that should not be influencing our young children’s learning process. To ensure your children are protected from inappropriate content and potentially dangerous web threats, we provide a centrally managed, enterprise filtering solution. Our solution is BECTA approved and includes data from the IWF ensuring your school has the very best protection whilst also providing site by site flexibility. This solution includes real-time automatic updates. Please see pages 13 and 14 for more information on our filtering solution.

Remote Backup

With school management data, accounting records, legal documents and emails all being stored digitally, it has become increasingly important for all organisations to ensure they backup their data regularly and securely. To help achieve this we provide a free Oakford Backup account with every OIS broadband package and a standard Oakford Backup software site license. All core modules are included (Exchange, System State, SIMS, SQL etc.) with a 50GB compressed and encrypted backup quota which are neatly processed by an automatic, secure backup each night with email confirmation in the morning.

There are a large number of services which all organisations now rely upon in the cloud. To ensure you are well covered we provide the following facilities with every OIS broadband package.

• 1GB Advanced Web Hosting Space, with support for PHP, MySQL, HTML and more.

• Centrally Managed Windows Update Server (WSUS).

• SSL Certificate which can be used to secure your own email access or remote access to your computer system.

• One UK school domain name, keep your current name or register a new .sch.uk domain name.

• Hosted Moodle VLE server.

Email

Provide students and staff with an enterprise-grade communication and productivity suite with Microsoft Office 365. Create an unlimited number of email accounts and benefit from the latest Microsoft software. Your email can be accessed from Outlook on your desktop, on your phone/tablet or from a web browser using the Outlook Web App. You can choose to keep your existing email addresses and domain name or create a new one to use with the following services • Email and calendars.

Website Design

Your website represents your school to both current and prospective parents. It is important that your website is professional, informative and easy to use while also ensuring your school is found through search engines. OIS can help with all elements of website design including producing graphics, creating unique functionality and can improve visibility through search engine optimisation. The website can then be fully managed in-house through our easy to use content management system (CMS), accessible from any computer via the Internet.

Disaster Recovery

Although remote backup and other backup methods can provide a basic level of disaster recovery, in the event of a large disaster such as a power outage before exam results day, or a fire/flood at school it would take days or weeks to reconfigure the computer network before restoring data from the backup. OIS offers two products to help with this: ProActive Disaster Recovery and Real-time Disaster Recovery.

Our ProActive DR facility takes snapshot images of your virtual servers remotely meaning that in the event of a disaster you will only need to obtain new hardware and restore one file per server with no re-configuration required. This method cuts down recovery time by half in most cases.

Our Real-time DR facility takes continuous copies of your servers and stores them in an offline state in our private cloud. In the event of a disaster you will be able to invoke DR, making the cloud servers live, which will enable you to download exam results from another Internet connected location such as another local school, or access from home.
