Happy New Year to everyone.
Last January 2007 ushered in a year that was both memorable and his-toric. Through all the events that took place in 2007, we must not forget those that are no longer with us and continue to honor their memory by keeping their dreams alive.
One of the memo-rable events that took place in 2007 was the first ever ‘community’ inauguration ceremony. It was my pleas-ure to hold my swearing in ceremony at the Gallery at South DeKalb Mall in order for all citizens to attend.
I have been hon-ored to serve as the Chair of
the United Way’s Early Learn-ing/School Readiness Com-mission and the goal is to improve the educational ex-perience for our children.
In 2007 many pro-jects began or culminated: Fire Station 26 on McAfee Road was opened, the groundbreaking for the Me-morial Drive Development (Wal-Mart/town homes) took place; the Candler/Flat Shoals LCI was approved, the Littler Patrol Posse began. Addition-ally, I launched the Economic Ambassador Training pro-gram that will training resi-dents on how to ‘sell’ DeKalb County and talk with devel-opers to get quality develop-ments in the area.
This year was also one that brought Grady
Hos-pital to the forefront and through the Johnson-Stokes Plan for A Healthy Grady, recommendations through Board Resolutions were made. This year also marked the grand opening of the Emory Clinic on Flat Shoals Parkway (Trinity Office Park), renewing Emory’s commit-ment to the community and last but certainly not least was the groundbreaking for the DeKalb Performing Arts Center on Rainbow Drive.
These are just a few of the milestones we have passed together and I look forward to working for you in 2008. I hope your holi-days were happy, safe and enjoyable; let’s begin 2008 with a bang!
December 2007/January 2008
During this past year, there have been discussions/ debates on whether DeKalb should hire additional police officers to augment the current police force. In light of this discussion/debate, Commis-sioner Larry Johnson is inter-ested in hearing from the pub-lic relative to your views on the
number of police officers and the number of code enforce-ment officers that should be hired - - - if any.
A short survey is online on Commissioner Johnson’s website and we ask that you take a few minutes to com-plete the survey.
To access the survey, logon to www.co.dekalb.ga.us click on “Larry Johnson” and then click on the link: “Your Opinion Counts - Police and Code En-forcement Survey.”
...and remember - - - your opinion counts!

Absentee Voting
•
House Bill 244 allows for “no Excuse” absentee
voting by mail. Application may be accepted six
months prior to an election
•
Absentee applications are available at both the
Dekalb County website and Secretary of State
website or by contacting the DeKalb County
Voter Registration & Elections Office at 4380
Me-morial Drive, Decatur, GA 30032, Phone:
298-4020. You may fax your application to:
404-298-4038
•
If you are physically disabled or over 75 years,
select “All Absentee Ballots as Allowed by Law”
on the application and you will automatically
re-ceive all ballots for the 2008 Election Cycle
(excluding the Presidential Preference Election
and any Special Elections). Otherwise, absentee
applications are required for each election.
•
Both the Presidential Preference and
Gen-eral Primary Elections nominates party
candidates and requires that you
desig-nate the party ballot you wish to receive.
This does not mean you are declaring
your allegiance to either party.
•
The Absentee Poll will be open 45 days
prior to each of the elections for in-house
voting, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. If you are eligible to vote
ab-sentee in person (a reason is still
re-quired), the Voter Registration Office
highly recommends you do so prior to
the week of Advance Voting to avoid
long lines and lengthy waits. The
Absen-tee Poll will not be open the day before
the election.
Election Day
You do not register by political party in the State of Georgia. You choose the primary in which you
wish to vote by selecting the party on the Voter’s Certificate on Presidential Preference or General
Pri-mary Election Day. Examples are posted at the poll. A run-off is simply a continuation of the Election.
You must vote for the same party in the run-off as you did in the Primary.
If you fail to vote in the General Primary, you are still eligible to vote in the General Primary Run-off
and/or General Election.
