About Åland
Åland is a home-ruled, demilitarized and Swedish speaking
territory that belongs to Finland. The Ålanders have
competence to make their own laws regarding health- and
medical services, internal communications, education,
culture and ancient monument preservation, industry, the
police, the postal service, radio and television and the local
administration. The legislative assembly of Åland (Lagtinget)
also
appoints
the

(Landskapsregeringen/The Government of Åland).
Åland received its own flag in 1954 and its own stamps in
1984.
Since 1970, Åland has its own representation in the Nordic
Council. The Government of Åland also participates in the
work of the Nordic Council of Ministers.
Åland joined the European Union in 1995, but stands outside
