A Half Century

of Success

Established in 1954 by Robert and Mary Lue Whiteside, Whiteside Manufacturing Company, Inc.

has been providing the world with innovation in professional mechanic’s creepers and seats for

half a century.

Robert started the company in a two-car garage on $800 he earned from refereeing high school

basketball games. His first product was a wooden creeper with cast iron casters. Over the course of

the next few decades, wooden creepers were the bread and butter of Whiteside’s business. In the

early ‘60’s, Robert developed a mechanic’s seat using the steel pan from the back of a truck seat

as the base of the mechanic’s seat. That seat remained in the product line until the mid-1990’s!

In the 1980’s, the evolution of a creeper with a metal frame took the world by storm, and

Whiteside began producing these new creepers. Whiteside quickly learned that protecting its

designs and utility of their products was essential, so now Whiteside has over 48 patents, and

several more are in the patent pending process!

Robert Whiteside is the picture of the “American Dream.” He saw an opportunity to get into

business and risked all he had saved to start his very own company. Robert has never believed in

debt, so his first month in business he made a small profit! His mission in 1954 was to supply the

most professional, long-lasting, innovative tools for the professional user, and after over 58 years

that mission is still Whiteside’s quest.

What sets Robert apart is his fundamental attitude toward business. He believes in quality,

working hard, never sitting satisfied, and most of all he believes in handshakes and giving people

his word (and he means it).

Over 58 years after Robert started the company, the Whiteside Manufacturing facility encompasses

almost 77,000 square feet with on-site warehouses, shipping and production facilities, and offices.

The mainstay of Whiteside’s business is made in Ohio, supporting their local community. Because

most items are custom and made-to-order, you have the flexibility of ordering what you need even

if it’s one unit.

With Whiteside Manufacturing’s custom artwork program you can order any design featured in this

catalog or supply your design and we can make it. With our flexibility and large selection of over

150 models of creepers and seats, we proudly stand above the competition.

Whiteside Manufacturing is now in its third generation of family leadership. Kirt and Terry Whiteside

(sons of Robert and Mary Lue) now own and operate the business, and Tenille Whiteside-Schoonover

(Kirt’s daughter) and Rob Whiteside (Terry’s son) are the latest to follow in Robert’s footsteps.
