Start-Up booklet 20152016

Welcome to The Company Program (UF- företagande),

2015/2016

With your own business idea, real money and business contacts you will run a company together with your peers during this school year.

In the Company Program you will learn how to take a business idea from concept to reality. You will form your own real enterprise and discover first-hand how a company functions. Running a UF-company involves starting, running and liquidating a company of your choice during a school year. For many students, running a UF-company is the most meaningful and fun thing they do during their time in high school. It takes quite a lot of work to be successful during your year with the Company Program; everybody in the company must take responsibilities, co-operate and together solve any problems that you may encounter. The more time, energy and commitment you put in your company the greater your experiences will be.

To be able to start working with your company you must be registered at Ung Företagsamhets website, www.

ungforetagsamhet.se. The registration opens on 1 September and we recommend that you register and pay

the registration fee of 300 SEK per company (not per person) as early as possible. Payment should be made to Bankgiro 176-7458. Don’t forget to state your company name so we know who the money comes from. When your company and all the members in the company are registered and the registration fee is paid you are ready to start working with your business.

In this booklet you will find some brief information about the Company Program that will be good for you to read as an introduction. For more detailed information about the different

parts you will encounter during the year and what you need to think about you should read our educational material, Entreprenörskap på riktigt, and browse our website, www.ungforetagsamhet.se

Updates and current information will be posted on the website continuously so make sure to keep yourself up-to-date on the information there.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, you find our contact information at the end of this booklet and on the website.

Ung Företagsamhet Skåne wishes you the best of luck and hope you will have a fun and rewarding year!

Karolina, Marie, Rose-Marie & Fredrik

What is Ung Företagsamhet?

Ung Företagsamhet is a non-governmental organization, financed by local businesses, entrepreneurs and communities. Our organization is politically independent and our aim is to help create more creative, ener-getic and enterprising adolescents.

The organization can be found in over one hundred countries; in Sweden we started in 1980, in Skåne 1986. In Sweden, Ung Företagsamhet is divided into 24 separate regions from North to South, with some 100 employees. During the previous school year, 2014/2015, there were

24 415 students attending the Company Program in Sweden, in Skåne we had 2388 students divided bet-ween 716 companies. In Skåne the Company Program is currently represented on about half of the high schools in the region.

Ung Företagsamhet also has education material directed towards the younger school years; Vårt Samhälle and Se Möjligheterna. And concepts that can be used as an introduction or a complement to the Company Year; Min Framtid och Ekonomi and Enterprise without Borders (EwB). These all help to create a common thread throughout the Primary and Secondary School system in Sweden.

When you are in contact with media you should always leave the above information about the organization Ung Företagsamhet.

To choose a business idea

Under läsåret 2014/2015 drev 24 415 elever, UF-företag i landet. I Skåne bedrivs verksamhet på 64 av drygt 130 gymnasieskolor, under läsåret 2014/2015 fanns 716 UF-företag och 2388 elever.

To choose a business idea

It is finally time to get started! The first step for your company is to come up with a

busi-ness idea that you are really passionate about and feel strongly for. A busibusi-ness idea does

not have to be a revolutionary idea, it can also be a new version or a modification of an

already existing product or service.

It is important that you “scan the market”; is there a need and an interest in our product or

service?

Naturally your business idea must follow Swedish law and the policies of Ung

Företagsam-het, see the student handbook page 111 for details.

Tip! Don’t let the process of coming up with an idea for your

com-pany take too long. The sooner you can make a decision and get

started the better.

Do you have problems coming up with an idea? Consider…

… what you enjoy doing? (hobby, leisure activities)

… what you are good at? (computers, welding, dancing, cooking, carpentry)

… if there is anything that irritates you? (disgusting dish cloths, a messy closet)

... if there are any products or services that you think are missing on the market, or that

you would like to improve

Tip! Choose a target group (for example families with children, seniors, disabled persons,

teenagers) and go out and ask them about their everyday problems and see if you can get

any ideas from them.

Try to see the possibilities in each idea or suggestion that you or your colleagues come up

with and don’t be too quick to say No.

Advisors

One of the compulsory elements is for your company to find one or more advisors to your company that you will have personal contact with during the Company Program. Before choosing your advisor you should consider what kind of help you think you might need for you company throughout the year. Perhaps you will need help with finance, manufacturing, marketing or something entirely different. Your advisor should not be a parent or sibling to anyone in the company.

Why an advisor?

Above all, you can use the advisors as a sounding board. At times you might, for example, need help finding new approaches to be able to solve a problem or to see other possibilities for your company. The advisors can also contribute with a wider network in the business world as your own might not be that extensive yet. Do not hesitate to ask for help. You should take help from your advisors as often as you need to but remember that your advisors have jobs to do themselves. Perhaps he or she cannot help

you in the exact moment as you would wish – therefore, make sure you plan ahead and respect their time. Patience and planning is the key.

Find and get in contact with your advisor as early as possible. He or she can help you with everything from business idea to the different reports. There are several different ways you can work with your advisors. You have to choose yourselves what suits your company the best.

Don’t forget to invite your advisors to the Regional Fair!

Sales & Marketing

As in any real enterprise it is important to promote your company and your products and services. As a

UF-company you often have the advantage that many people think it is fun and interesting to meet young crea

-tive people. What marketing and sales methods are right for your company is for you to decide. It will differ greatly from one company to another.

Here are some examples of places where you might want to be present with your company and ways of marketing your company:

• Open-house events at school

• Morning or lunch meetings for local businesses • In the local shops

• Mouth-to-mouth (family gatherings, friends, internet etc.) • Flyers

• Websites • Christmas fairs

Once you are registered as a member in a UF-company and the company’s registration fee of

300 SEK has been paid you and your UF-company are insured by the insurance company Nordic Försäkring och Riskhantering AB. Your business insurance includes damage to company property and to damage that the company’s products or services may cause others. The insurance also includes operations- and product liability and a personal accident insurance for each company member. In some cases the insurance might

have to be supplemented, for examples if your company deals with mopeds, cars, machines or other expen

-sive equipment and if you rent or borrow property in connection with trade fairs or similar.

If an accident occurs it is important that you quickly get in touch with the insurance company and follow their instructions.

If you have any questions about insurance or think your company might need additional insurance, you can find more information at www.ungforetagsamhet.se or you may contact

UF-Company and taxes

The following applies to tax and VAT rules for UF companies in Sweden:

1. Please note that there is no longer a limit to a UF-company’s allowed turnover in one fiscal year (January to December). Hence the earlier limit of 30 000 SEK is no longer applicable to UF-companies. The following is taken from www.skatteverket.se

”Ingen moms.

Activities

Invitations to apply to our events will be posted continuously on our website. Make a habit of checking there regularly to be up to date and not to miss out on anything!

Most competitions require participation at the annual regional fair. Some of the winning companies at the regional fair will have the chance to represent Skåne at the National Championship (SM) in the Company Program in Stockholm in May 2016. It brings together UF -companies from across the country. NOTE! Com-peting can be a fun addition during the year but is neither a mandatory nor a crucial element of the Company Program.

Liquidation and Certificate

Late May or early June, depending on when your school year ends, you must liquidate your

UF-company. Have you met the required criteria (the compulsory course registration, business plan, a mini-mum of two sales opportunities, meet advisors at least once, annual report and have completed at least three additional elements) you will receive a certificate. You can read more about this in the student handbook and on our website.

We wish you the best of luck!
