Dr. S. Akbar Hasan is a board certified, fellowship-trained cornea, laser refractive, and cataract specialist. Dr. Hasan served as the lead cataract and corneal surgeon and Director of the Laser Vision Correction Program for the Mayo Clinic for ten years. Dr. Hasan has tremendous surgical experience in corneal transplantation, laser cataract surgery with premium intraocular lenses and LASIK.
Dr. Hasan provides comprehensive eye examinations for cataracts, refractive surgery (LASIK), corneal diseases such as corneal infections and scars, pterygia, dry eye, and blepharitis, diabetes, and other eye diseases. Dr. Hasan continues to engage in research, present at national meetings and publish in peer-reviewed literature.
Amit Chokshi, M.D.
A board certified ophthalmologist, Dr. Amit Chokshi is highly trained in laser vision correction and is a graduate of the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine. After completing his residency at Vanderbilt Medical Center, where he began performing refractive surgery, Dr. Chokshi was awarded a fellowship at the Laser and Corneal Surgery Associates/New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, where he specialized in refractive corneal surgery.
Dr. Chokshi went on to serve as director of the University of Florida Laser Eye Center. Dr. Chokshi is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society and the Cornea Society. Dr. Chokshi specializes in LASIK, cataract surgery, dry eye and corneal disease.
NEARSIGHTEDNESS
Nearsightedness, or myopia, occurs when the cornea is too curved or the eye is too long. This causes light to focus in front of the retina, resulting in blurry distance vision.
FARSIGHTEDNESS
Farsightedness, or hyperopia, occurs when the cornea is too flat. This causes light to focus beyond the retina and results in blurry near vision.
What is All-Laser LASIK?
All-Laser LASIK is a procedure that corrects vision by reshaping the cornea using the precision of excimer laser technology. It is one of the most popular forms of vision correction due to its accuracy, safety, quick recovery time, wide range of correction and minimal discomfort. The entire procedure takes only a short time, both eyes can be done the same day, and no stitches or patches are necessary.
The All-Laser LASIK Procedure: Step-by-Step
Once the procedure is completed, you will be given additional eye drops. Your vision will probably be a little blurry at first, so we ask that you have someone drive you home and that you relax for the rest of the day. Recovery from All-Laser LASIK is amazingly fast. At Florida Eye Specialists you can count on us to be there every step of the way.
Using Wavefront-Guided technology, we take a “fingerprint” image and map of your entire optical system. This detailed information is evaluated by the surgeon and is transferred to the laser.
A laser is used to create the corneal flap with the safety and precision of a computer-controlled laser beam. The surgeon then gently folds this flap back to prepare the eye for the treatment laser.
A cool laser beam is used to reshape the cornea and eliminate sources of aberration. The most advanced tracking and alignment system (ACE™
Iris Tracker) is in place to ensure both safety and accuracy throughout your entire procedure.
Finally, the protective flap that was created in step two is gently placed back in its original position. The cornea begins healing immediately and you can return home.

ASTIGMATISM
Astigmatism often occurs alongside either farsightedness or nearsightedness. Astigmatism is when the cornea is shaped like a football and causes light to focus on more than one point on the retina blurring or distorting vision.

DAY ONE
Many patients will experience significantly improved vision

to use and protective glasses to wear during sleep for the next several days. We suggest you have someone drive you home for a day of rest and relaxation.
DAY TWO
Your vision is significantly clearer, if not already 20/20.* Most patients are able
to drive and return to work and their everyday activities, and will continue to notice improvements in their vision. You will be contacted by our doctors to ensure you’re doing fine and will schedule a follow up appointment.
DAY THREE
You are feeling great and seeing better than ever. Your eyes may get a little tired in the afternoon and you may use drops if your eyes become dry. Your future is looking clear and bright.*
What to Expect
The day of your procedure
You will be asked to arrive an hour before your procedure for pre-operative preparation, which includes both antibiotic and anesthetic drops to numb your eyes. We will review your post-operative medications and activity restrictions at this time and answer any remaining questions you may have. Please wear comfortable clothing. You will remain awake during the entire procedure, during which you may expect to experience little or no pain. The entire procedure will last approximately 10 minutes per eye. After surgery, you may experience mild discomfort for 6-8 hours. Since you are just getting used to the freedom of clearer vision, we ask that someone drive you home and for you to relax for the remainder of the day. Most patients are LASIK candidates, but if another procedure for vision correction is recommended, expectations after surgery may differ.
The next few days
The day after your procedure, you will have a postoperative appointment to examine your eyes and to discuss any questions you may have. Most patients are able to drive and return to work and other normal activities the next day.

WHAT TO EXPECT
FAQs
Does LASIK hurt?
Because the cornea is numbed with eye drop anesthesia, patients report little to no discomfort during the procedure. Some patients experience some scratchiness or grittiness for a few hours following while others did not experience any discomfort at all. We ask everyone to go home and take a nap immediately after his or her LASIK procedure. For any discomfort that remains after your nap, Advil or Tylenol is usually sufficient.
When will I be able to see?
Many patients notice an immediate improvement in their vision and have functional vision the very next day. Full visual results are typically reached within one to three weeks but individual results do vary.
When can I return to work, drive
and to my normal activities?
You can resume most normal activities such as driving, working, walking, and exercising the day after your procedure. For women, eye makeup cannot be worn for three days and they should purchase new mascara. Swimming or contact sports such as basketball or racquetball should be delayed for two weeks.
What if my eye moves during
the treatment or I blink?
During the procedure a device will gently hold your eyelids open, which will prevent you from blinking. In addition, at Florida Eye Specialists the laser we use involves advanced eye tracking technology. In fact, Florida Eye Specialists uses the only Advanced Control Eye Tracker (ACE™) available in
Jacksonville, the most comprehensive eye tracker available in the U.S. This technology offers improved predictability and better visual outcomes, particularly for patients with astigmatism. If, at any time, your eye moves too quickly or out of range, the laser will track even the tiniest movements.
Will I need to wear glasses after?
Most patients who have undergone All-Laser LASIK at Florida Eye Specialists no longer need glasses for their daily activities. However, if you’re over 40 and did not elect for MonoVision LASIK, there is a possibility that you will need reading glasses because of the natural aging process of the eye. This condition, presbyopia, occurs as you get older.
