Introduction

Quantum introduces the Quantum DXi V4000 Deduplication Virtual Appliance that com-bines the power of deduplication functionality with the simplicity and flexible deployment model of virtual machines to provide backup and Disaster Recovery (DR) protection for distributed sites, small businesses and cloud deployments.

The DXi V4000 is a DXi delivered as a software-based virtual appliance that uses a cus-tomer’s own virtual machine infrastructure. As with all other Quantum DXi’s, the DXi V4000 works with any backup software to protect both physical and virtual systems, and provides off-site protection through replication to other Quantum DXi systems and Q-Cloud.

The DXi V4000 is scalable from 4TB to 24TB of usable capacity in 1TB Capacity Up-grades increments. The product includes all licensed functionality for one price. Gold and Silver Software Support, sold separately, contracts provide access to updates and tech-nical support, and are must be purchased along with associated licenses.

Key Messages

The most important things to know about the DXi V4000 product are:

All-virtual deployment allows seamlessly integration into any existing backup envi-ronment for physical or virtual system protection

Provides flexible single-unit capacity of 4TB to 24TB with capacity-on-demand li-censing for easy expansion

Ideal for edge-to-core deployments or centralized replication target use

Provides all features in the purchase price including Deduplication, NAS, OST, DXi Accent, and Replication

Field Action

Field personnel and channel partners looking to position Quantum DXi technology into edge environments, data centers, or who want to take advantage of cloud computing technology should position the DXi V4000 as a solution for data protection problems. This announcement includes worldwide end-user list pricing. Channel partners should refer to separate region/channel pricing-only announcements for partner pricing. Pricing can also be found online now in online quoting tools.

Special Considerations

The Quantum DXi V4000 is a software virtual appliance and requires that the customer provides their own hardware and VMware infrastructure. Customer-observed perfor-mance is directly related to the platform utilized. Please see the section Platform Support on page 3 for more information on minimum system requirements.

Product Description

Overview

The DXi V4000 extends that expertise in deduplication virtual appliances that Quantum established with the award winning DXi V1000 in a new, higher performance, larger capacity offer-ing.

Key Features

The DXi V4000 includes the following key features:

Seamlessly deploys into any existing backup

environ-ment for physical or virtual system protection

Provides flexible single-unit capacity of up to 24TB with capacity-on-demand licensing for easy expansion

Ideal for edge-to-core deployments or centralized

repli-cation target use

Provides all features in the purchase price including Deduplication, NAS, OST, DXi Accent, and Replication

Seamless Virtual Appliance

Deployment

The DXi V4000 is a virtual appliance software product that can be readily deployed using a template into any VMware ESX/ESXi 5.0 or greater environment. Because the DXi V4000 is a virtual appliance, customers may take advantage of VMware’s flexible networking, live migration of workloads for load balancing, high availability failover and vCloud deploy-ments for hybrid cloud computing models.

Because the DXi V4000 provides a full range of tested com-patibility with third party ISVs, customers may protect both traditional physical systems and virtual infrastructures. Com-bining the flexible virtual infrastructure deployment of the DXi V4000 with the ability to protect both physical and virtual sys-tems is a winning combination for customers.

Capacity-on-Demand from 4TB to

24TB of Deduplicated Data

The DXi V4000 allows customers to more easily add storage through the use of capacity-on-demand licensing. The DXi V4000 can be expanded from a base of 4TB to 24TB of usa-ble, deduplicated capacity, in 1TB increments through a simple installation of a capacity license key. Additional capacity is made immediately available, without any downtime or reboot required. The DXi V4000 checks Quantum’s centralized licens-ing server daily for new capacity licenses and will install them automatically if available. Customers may also manually enter the capacity license key for immediate availability.

The capacity-on-demand licensing in small 1TB increments allows DXi V4000 customers to match their storage investment with their data rate growth. Customers are encouraged to use thin provisioned storage so that the DXi V4000 will consume the minimum disk space required. Additionally, 1TB capacity expansions are priced the same, no matter the capacity. This allows customers more predictability for their capacity expan-sion costs.

As with all Quantum DXi products, the licensed capacity is the usable capacity of deduplicated data. Assuming a 15-to-1 data reduction ratio, the DXi V4000 can effectively store between 60TB (4TB license) to 360TB (24TB license) of customer data.

Note that customers should have available up to 0.5TB (512GB) of disk space in addition to their licensed capacity. This allow for the growth of log files and metadata.

Edge-to-Core Deployments

The DXi V4000 fits well into customer deployments where the use of an additional physical system may not be possible or desirable. The use of an existing virtual infrastructure means that the DXi V4000 can be rapidly deployed, even to remote locations.

Additionally, because of the wide capacity range, the DXi V4000 is a great choice for use in a central IT data center-- either as a primary backup target device or as a centralized replication target device from other Quantum DXi systems. The DXi V4000 supports up to 10 inbound replication systems, though this number may be adjusted, with assistance from Quantum Service, up to 20 depending on the customer de-ployment.

All DXi Features Included

The DXi V4000 provides all of the DXi features for a NAS-based target device in the base license. Each DXi V4000 fea-tures:

Patented Quantum DXi variable-length deduplication technology for maximum storage efficiency

NFS, CIFS (SMB), OST, DXi Accent ingest support

Secure Web and CLI administrative interface

DXi Advanced Reporting for usage reporting and trend analysis

Encrypted, WAN-efficient Replication compatible with all other DXi 2.x systems

The DXi V4000 is also fully supported for use by Quantum Vision software. Vision provides trend analysis and a central-ized point of administration for all of Quantum’s DXi deduplication appliances, vmPRO data protection software and Scalar tape libraries.

Product Positioning

The DXi V4000 fits into the Quantum DXi line as an entry-level system. There are some unique means for identifying the use cases and customers that are best suited to the DXi V4000:

Customers highly invested in a VMware infrastructure who leverage its high availability, flexible storage and possibly multi-tenant capability

Customers willing to utilize a fairly powerful server to run the V4000

Those with remote deployment models or geographically diverse sites in which they can not deploy a physical ap-pliance

Internal private cloud providers or Managed Service Providers who are interested in a flexible data protection product

Competitive Positioning

The closest competitor to the DXi V4000 is the HP StoreOnce VSA, which is a virtual appliance offering for target-based deduplication. Compared to that product, the DXi V4000 offers:

(3)

Significantly faster performance of up to 3.9TB/hr (OST) verses HP’s 500GB/hr

Broader support for replication with up to 20 inbound targets verses one for the HP product

Broader single-appliance range of up to 24TB for the DXi V4000 verses 10TB maximum for the HP product

Support for CIFS, NFS, OST and DXi Accent verses

lim-ited NAS, VTL and no OST for the HP product
