ABOUT THE COMPOSER

James Hosay is a native of Nashville, Tennessee, but has spent most of his life in his

adopted state of Virginia. Growing up in Norfolk, he began arranging for his school band

at age 13. He everltually wrote.his first original composition two years later ..

After graduating from high school, Hosay joined the military as a trumpet player, and

attended the US Armed Forces School of Music. After graduation, he served as a music

copyist for the US Army Band. During this time he developed his composition and

orchestration skilis by studying the techniques used by top quality arrangers.

In 1991, after competing against a large field of civilian and military writers, Hosay obtained

his current position of Arranger/Composer for the US Army Band (Pershing's Own), in

Washington, DC. Since that time he has become successful as a published composer. He

currently resides in Resten, Virginia, where intheSpring of 1995 he began writing music

for concert band and brass band exclusively for CURNOW MUSIC PRESS.

A CELTIC CHRISTMAS

PROGRAM NOTE:

Throughout the ages, the Celts have provided the world with a beautiful and unique musical tradition. Whether it is a

traditional song of Celtic origin, or a song from another land adapted

to

the Celtic style, it is a sound that warms the heart

and ignites the senses. This is especially true of Christmas music. A CELTIC CHRISTMAS is a festive holiday Rhapsody of

popular European Christmas carols in traditional Celtic settings.

NOTE TO THE CONDUCTOR:

In the introduction, the percussion should begin as soft as possible and gradually crescendo, as if they are off in the distance,

gètting closer and closer. Beginning at measure 9, make sure to pay attention to articulation markings. At measure 57, the

melody line in clarinet and bassoon solos should be played with a slight separation between the notes, similar to a violin

. bouncing the bow off of the strings. The other parts that play the melody at measure 60 should copy this style. The sectien

between measure 68 and 84 is heavily cross-cued

to

give the option of a lightly scored Chamber Music sound, or a heavier

scored ensemble sound. There should be no change in tempo when the meter changes from 6/8 to 2/4. In measures 85-91,

dynamic markings are very important, particularly the sfp markings. At measure 119, where the meter changes to 3/4, the

tempo remains the same. Proper phrasing and breath control are important here. Measures 154-161 should be just like the

introduction. Beginning at measure 162, a very precise, pulse-like tempo must be maintained. Notice the sudden changes in

style that occur between measures 170 and 184. The sectien beginning at measure 184 attempts to simulate the sound of a

Bagpipe Band. Eneauraging the band to play slightly out of tune can enhance this effect. From measure 204 to the end of

the piece, balance is very important, as several different melodies are interwoven throughout the ensemble. In measures 244

and 245, makesure the dotted half notes with grace notes in front of them (clarinet 2&3, alto saxophones, and trombones

1 &2) are prominently heard.
