Abstract

Let (A0,A1) be a compatible couple of normed spaces. We study the interrelation of the generalK-interpolation spaces of the couple (A0+A1,A0∩A1) with those of the couples (A0,A1), (A0+A1,A0), (A0+A1,A1), (A0,A0∩A1), and (A1,A0∩A1).

1 Introduction

Let (A,A) be a compatible couple of normed spaces,i.e.we assume that bothAand

A are continuously embedded in a topological vector spaceA. The sum ofAandA,

denoted byA+A, is the set of elementsf ∈Athat can be represented asf =f+fwhere

f∈Aandf∈A. The norm on the sum spaceA+Ais given by fA+A=inf

fA+fA:f∈A,f∈A,f =f+f

. The norm on the intersection spaceA∩Ais given by

fA∩A=max

fA,fA

.

The Peetre’sK-functional is defined, for eachfA+Aandt> , by

K(t,f;A,A) =inf

fA+tfA:f∈A,f∈A,f =f+f

.

Letbe a normed space of Lebesgue measurable functions, defined on (,∞), with mono-tone norm:|g| ≤ |h|impliesgh. Further assume that

t−→min{,t} ∈. (.) By definition, the generalK-interpolation space (A,A)is a subspace ofA+Ahaving

the following norm:

f(A,A)=K(t,f;A,A).

(2)

Hereis often termed the parameter of theK-interpolation method. We refer to [] for a complete treatment of the generalK-interpolation method.

Set

=[, ]×[,∞]\{, } ×[,∞).

Let (θ,p)∈, then the classical scale ofK-interpolation spaces (A,A)θ,q(see [] or []) is

obtained whenis taken to be the weighted Lebesgue spaceLq(tθ) defined by the norm

g=

(tθ|g(t)|p dt t)

/p, (θ,p)(, )×[,), sup<t<tθ|g(t)|, (θ,p)[, ]× {∞}.

The following identity was proved by Maligranda []:

(A+A,A∩A)θ,p=

(A,A)θ,p+ (A,A)–θ,p, (θ,p)∈,

(A,A)θ,p∩(A,A)–θ,p, (θ,p)∈,

(.)

where

=

[, /×[,∞])\{} ×[,∞)

and

=

[/, ]×[,∞]\{} ×[,∞).

Subsequently, Maligranda [] considered theK-interpolation spaces (A,A),p, which are

obtained whenis given by

g=

(∞(|g((tt))|)p dt t)

/p, p<, sup<t<|g((tt))|, p=∞,

and extended the identity (.) by imposing certain monotonicity conditions on the pa-rameter function. Another related identity, proved by Persson [], states that

(A+A,A∩A),p= (A+A,A),p∩(A+A,A),p.

Recently, Haase [] has completely described how the classicalK-interpolation spaces for the couples (A,A), (A+A,A), (A+A,A), (A,A∩A), (A,A ∩A), and

(A+A,A∩A) interrelate. The assertions (.)-(.) in [], Theorem ., concern the

spaces (A+A,A∩A)θ,p, and the goal of this paper is to extend these assertions by

means of replacing the classical scale (A,A)θ,pby the general scale (A,A).

The main ingredient of our proofs will be the estimate in Proposition . (see below) which relates theK-functional of the couple (A+A,A∩A) with that of the original

couple (A,A), whereas this estimate has not been used in []. Consequently, our

(3)

We will also apply our general results to the limitingK-interpolation spaces (A,A),p;K

and (A,A),p;K recently introduced by Cobos, Fernández-Cabrera, and Silvestre [].

Namely, if the parameter spacesandare given by the norms

g=

g(s)pds

s

p

+sup s>

g(s) (.)

and

g=sup <s<

|g(s)|

s +

|g(s)|

s p ds sp , (.)

where ≤p<∞, then (A,A)= (A,A),p;K and (A,A)= (A,A),p;K. Note that,

for limiting valuesθ = , , the space (A,A)θ,p is trivial (containing only zero element)

whenpis finite. The space (A,A),p;K corresponds to the limiting valueθ= , and the

space (A,A),p;Kcorresponds to the limiting valueθ= . We will, for convenience, write

(A,A){},pfor (A,A),p;K, and (A,A){},pfor (A,A),p;K.

The paper is organised as follows. In Section , we establish all necessary background material, whereas Section  contains the main results.

2 Background material

In the following we will use the notationABfor non-negative quantities to mean that

AcBfor some positive constantcwhich is independent of appropriate parameters in-volved inAandB. IfABandBA, we will writeAB. Moreover, we will use the symbolXYto show thatXis continuously embedded inY.

The elementary but useful properties of theK-functional are collected in the following proposition.

Proposition .([]) Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces.Then K(t,f;

A,A)is non-decreasing in t,and K(t,f;A,A)/t is non-increasing in t.Moreover,we have

K(t,f;A,A)≤ fA, fA,t> ; (.)

K(t,f;A,A)≤tfA, fA,t> ; (.)

K(t,f;A,A) =tK

t–,f;A,A

, fA+A,t> ; (.)

K(t,f+g;A,A)≤K(t,f;A,A) +K(t,g;A,A), f,gA+A,t> . (.)

In the next three propositions, we describe some formulas which relate theK-functional of the couples (A+A,A), (A,A∩A), and (A+A,A∩A) with that of the original

couple (A,A).

Proposition . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces,and let fA+A.

Then

(4)

Proof In view of (.), the proof follows immediately from the following relation:

K(t,f;A,A+A) =K(t,f;A,A), t> , (.)

which has been derived in [], Lemma .. For the proof of the next result, we refer to [], Lemma ..

Proposition . Let (A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces,and let fA.

Then

K(t,f;A,A∩A)K(t,f;A,A) +tfA,  <t< .

The next result is derived in [], Theorem .

Proposition . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed space,and let fA+A.

Then

K(t,f;A+A,A∩A)≈K(t,f;A,A) +tK

t–,f;A,A

,  <t< .

In our proofs, we will make use of the fact that, for a parameter space, both(,)(s)

andχ(,∞)are finite. This fact is a simple consequence of (.). Moreover, in view of the

monotonicity of the norm · and the fact thatK(t,f;A,A) =fA+A, we have

f(A,A)χ(,)(t)K(t,f;A,A)+χ(,∞)(t)K(t,f;A,A). (.)

We will make use of the next result, without explicitly mentioning it, in our proofs.

Proposition . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces, and assume that

AA.Then

f(A,A)χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A).

Proof It will suffice to derive

f(A,A)χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A), (.)

as the converse estimate is trivial. Using (.) and (.), we get

f(A,A) χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+fAχ(,∞)

χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+fA,

as our assumptionAAimplies thatfA≈ fA+A, so

(5)

SinceK(t,f;A,A)/tis non-increasing int, we obtain χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)K(,f;A,A)(,)(s),

which gives

fA+Aχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A). (.)

Now (.) follows from (.) and (.). The proof is complete.

3 Main results

Theorem . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces. Then, for an arbitrary

parameter space,we have with equivalent norms

(A+A,A)∩(A+A,A)= (A+A,A∩A).

Proof PutB= (A+A,A),B= (A+A,A), andB= (A+A,A∩A). Letf

A+A. Then by Proposition .

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A,

next making use of (.), we arrive at

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A).

Finally, appealing to Proposition ., we get

fBfB+fB,

which concludes the proof.

Remark . The result of Theorem . generalizes the assertion (.) in [], Theorem ..

Theorem . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces. Then, for an arbitrary

parameter space,we have with equivalent norms

(A,A∩A)+ (A,A∩A)= (A+A,A∩A).

Proof PutB= (A,A∩A),B= (A,A∩A) andB= (A+A,A∩A). Letf

B+B, and take an arbitrary decompositionf =f+fwithf∈Bandf∈B. Then by

(.), we have

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A+A,A∩A)

+χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A+A,A∩A),

now applying the simple fact that

(6)

we obtain

fBfB+fB,

from which the estimatefBfB+B follows as the decompositionf =f+fis

arbi-trary. In order to establish the converse estimate, we takefBand note that there exists (by definition of the norm onA+A) a particular decompositionf =f+fwithf∈A

andf∈Asuch that

fA+fAfA+A. (.)

By Proposition .,

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+(,)(s)fA

χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+fA,

sincef=ff, we get by (.)

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+fA,

next we use (.) to obtain

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+(,)(s)fA+fA

χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+fA+fA

and, using (.), we get

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+fA+A,

in accordance with (.), we deduce that

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A).

Analogously, we can obtain

fBχ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A.

Therefore, combining the previous two estimates, we find that

fB+fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A,

from which, in view of Proposition ., it follows that

fB+BfB,

(7)

Remark . The result of Theorem . generalizes the assertion (.) in [], Theorem .. In order to formulate the further results, we need the following conditions on the pa-rameter spacesand:

(C) χ(,)(s)g(s)χ(,)(s)g(s).

(C) χ(,)(s)g(s)χ(,)(s)g(s).

(C) χ(,∞)(s)g(s)χ(,∞)(s)g(s).

(C) χ(,∞)(s)g(s)≈ χ(,)(s)sg(/s).

(C) χ(,∞)(s)g(s)≈ χ(,)(s)sg(/s).

Remark . Let (θ,p)∈, and assume thatandare given by the norms

g=

(tθ|g(t)|p dt

t )/p, (θ,p)∈(, )×[,∞),

sup<t<tθ|g(t)|, (θ,p)[, ]× {∞}, (.)

and

g=

(t–θ|g(t)|p dt t)

/p, (θ,p)(, )×[,),

sup<t<t–θ|g(t)|, (θ,p)[, ]× {∞}. (.)

Then it is easy to see that (C) and (C) hold for (θ,p)∈, and (C) holds for (θ,p)∈.

The conditions (C) and (C) hold trivially for all (θ,p)∈.

Remark . Let ≤p<∞, and assume thatandare given by (.) and (.). Then

we note that (C), (C), (C), and (C) hold.

Theorem . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces, and assume that the

parameter spaces andsatisfy(C), (C)and(C).Then we have with equivalent

norms

(A,A)∩(A,A)= (A+A,A∩A).

Proof PutB= (A,A),B= (A,A)andB= (A+A,A∩A). LetfA+A.

Then

fB+fB≈χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,∞)(s)K(s,f;A,A)

+χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,∞)(s)K(s,f;A,A),

which, in view of (C) and (C), reduces to

fB+fB≈χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,∞)(s)K(s,f;A,A),

at this point we use (C) to obtain

fB+fB≈χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)K

(8)

finally, applying Proposition ., we conclude that

fB+fB≈ fB.

The proof is complete.

Remark . Applying Theorem . to the parameter spacesandgiven by (.) and

(.), we get back the result (.) in [], Theorem ., for (θ,p)∈. Note that the case

when (θ,p)∈follows from the case when (θ,p)∈by replacingθby  –θ.

Corollary . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces,and let≤p<∞.

Then we have with equivalent norms

(A,A){},p∩(A,A){},p= (A+A,A∩A){},p.

Proof The proof follows by applying Theorem . to the parameter spacesand

given by (.) and (.).

Theorem . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces, and assume that the

parameter spacesandsatisfy(C), (C),and(C).Then we have with equivalent

norms

(A,A)+ (A,A)= (A+A,A∩A).

Proof PutB= (A,A),B= (A,A) andB= (A+A,A∩A). LetfB+B,

and writef=f+f, wheref∈Bandf∈B. Now by Proposition ., we have fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A,

using (C) gives

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,∞)(s)K(s,f;A,A),

sincef =f+f, so by (.), we have

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)

+χ(,∞)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,∞)(s)K(s,f;A,A),

by (C) and (C), we arrive at

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)

+χ(,∞)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,∞)(s)K(s,f;A,A),

which gives

(9)

from which the estimatefBfB+Bfollows. To derive the other estimate, takefB,

and choose a particular decompositionf =f+f, withf∈Aandf∈A, satisfying (.).

Then

fB≈χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,∞)(s)K(s,f;A,A)

χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)

+χ(,∞)fA

χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)

+fA,

where we have used (.). Next proceeding in the same way as in the proof of Theorem ., we obtain

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A). (.)

Also, we can show that

fBχ(,∞)(s)K(s,f;A,A),

which, in view of (C), becomes fBχ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A,

which, combined with (.), yields

fB+fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A

,

which, in view of Proposition ., gives

fB+fBfB,

from which the desired estimatefB+BfB follows. The proof of the theorem is

finished.

Remark . Theorem ., applied to the parameter spacesand given by (.)

and (.), gives back (.) in [], Theorem ..

Corollary . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces,and let≤p<∞.

Then we have with equivalent norms

(A,A){},p+ (A,A){},p= (A+A,A∩A){},p.

Proof Apply Theorem . to the parameter spacesandgiven by (.) and (.).

Theorem . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces, and assume that the

parameter spacesandsatisfy(C).Then we have with equivalent norms

(10)

Proof DenoteB= (A,A∩A),B= (A+A,A∩A), andB= (A,A∩A). Let

fA. The estimatefB+fBfB follows thanks to the condition (C) and the

following simple inequality:

K(t,f;A+A,A∩A)≤K(t,f;A,A∩A), t> . (.)

To derive the converse estimate, we apply Proposition . to obtain

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+fA. (.)

Next, sinceK(t,f;A,A)/tis non-increasing int, observe that χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A∩A)≥K(,f;A,A∩A)(,)(s),

notingK(,f;A,A∩A) =fA, we have

fAfB. (.)

By Proposition ., we also have

χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)

fB. (.)

Finally, combining (.), (.), and (.), we obtain fBfB+fB. The proof is

finished.

Remark . By applying Theorem . to the parameter spacesandgiven by (.)

and (.), we get back (.) in [], Theorem ., for (θ,p)∈.

Corollary . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces,and let≤p<∞.

Then we have with equivalent norms

(A,A∩A){},p∩(A+A,A∩A){},p= (A,A∩A){},p.

Proof Apply Theorem . to the parameter spacesandgiven by (.) and (.).

Theorem . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces, and assume that the

parameter spacesandsatisfy(C).Then we have with equivalent norms

(A,A∩A)∩(A+A,A∩A)= (A,A∩A).

Proof It will suffice to establish that (A,A∩A)→(A+A,A∩A). Letf

(A,A∩A), then by (.) we have

χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A+A,A∩A)

≤χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A∩A),

consequently, in view of condition (C), we obtain

χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A+A,A∩A)χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A∩A),

(11)

Remark . For (θ,p)∈, the result (.) in [], Theorem ., follows from

Theo-rem ., applied to the parameter spacesandgiven by (.) and (.).

Corollary . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces,and let≤p<∞.

Then we have with equivalent norms

(A,A∩A){},p∩(A+A,A∩A){},p= (A,A∩A){},p.

Proof Apply Theorem . to the parameter spacesandgiven by the norms

g=sup

<s< |g(s)|

s +

|g(s)|

s p ds sp (.) and

g=

g(s)pds

g(s). (.)

Theorem . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces, and assume that the

parameter spacesandsatisfy(C).Then we have with equivalent norms

(A+A,A)+ (A+A,A∩A)= (A+A,A).

Proof PutB= (A+A,A),B= (A+A,A∩A), andB= (A+A,A). Letf

B+B, and take an arbitrary decompositionf =f+fwithf∈Bandf∈B. Then by

(.)

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A+A,A)

+χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A+A,A),

using condition (C) and the fact that

K(t,f;A+A,A)≤K(t,f;A+A,A∩A), t> ,

we obtain

fBfB+fB,

whence, sincef =f+f is an arbitrary decomposition, we getfBfB+B. For the

converse estimate, letfB, and choose a particular decompositionf =f+f, withf∈A

andf∈A, satisfying (.). By Proposition ., fB≈χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A

,

using (.), we obtain

(12)

which, sincef=ff, gives

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+fA,

now using (.), it follows that

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+fA+fA. (.)

Using (.) also gives

fB≈χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A+A,A)

fAχ(,)(s)

fA,

which, together with (.), leads to

fB+fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+fA+fA,

whence, in view of (.), it follows that

fB+fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+fA+A,

according to ., we arrive at

fB+fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A),

appealing to Proposition . yields

fB+fBfB

from which the desired estimatefB+BfBfollows. The proof is complete.

Remark . We recover (.) in [], Theorem ., for (θ,p)∈, by an application of

Theorem . to the parameter spacesandgiven by (.) and (.).

Corollary . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces,and let≤p<∞.

Then we have with equivalent norms

(A+A,A){},p+ (A+A,A∩A){},p= (A+A,A){},p.

Proof Apply Theorem . to the parameter spacesandgiven by (.) and (.).

Theorem . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces, and assume that the

parameter spacesandsatisfy(C).Then we have with equivalent norms

(13)

Proof It suffices to show that

(A+A,A∩A)→(A+A,A).

Letf ∈(A+A,A∩A). Then, using condition (C) and the elementary fact that

K(t,f;A+A,A)≤K(t,f;A+A,A∩A), t> ,

we have

χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A+A,A)

χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A+A,A)

χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A+A,A∩A),

which finishes the proof.

Remark . Theorem ., applied to the parameter spacesandgiven by (.)

and (.), gives back (.) in [], Theorem ., for (θ,p)∈.

Corollary . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces,and let≤p<∞.

Then we have with equivalent norms

(A+A,A){},p+ (A+A,A∩A){},p= (A+A,A){},p.

Proof Apply Theorem . to the parameter spacesandgiven by (.) and (.).

Theorem . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces, and assume that the

parameter spacesandsatisfy(C).Then we have with equivalent norms

(A,A∩A)+ (A+A,A∩A)= (A,A),

where

g=χ(,)(s)g(s)+χ(,)(s)sg(/s).

Proof SetB= (A,A∩A) andB= (A+A,A∩A). LetfB+B, and write

f =f+fwithf∈Bandf∈B. Making use of (.), we have

f(A,A)I+I, (.)

where

I=χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)

and

I=χ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A+χ(,)(s)sK

(14)

The condition (C), along with the following simple inequality:

K(t,f;A,A)≤K(t,f;A,A∩A), t> ,

implies that

Iχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A∩A)

+χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A). (.)

Next we observe thatf∈AasB⊂A. Therefore, we can apply (.) to arrive at

IfA+χ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A

. (.)

The proof of the estimate

fAχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A∩A) (.)

is the same as that of (.). Finally, inserting estimates (.) and (.) in (.) and then using (.) and Proposition ., we get

f(A,A)fB+fB,

which gives the estimatef(A,A)fB+B. In order to prove the other estimate, we

takef ∈(A,A), and select a particular decompositionf =f+f, withf∈Aandf∈A,

satisfying condition (.). Then proceeding in the same way as in the proof of Theorem ., we obtain

fBχ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A).

Also, we have

fBχ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A

.

Therefore, these estimates, along with the definition of, imply that

fB+fBf(A,A),

whence we getfB+Bf(A,A). The proof is finished.

Remark . Takeandto be given by (.) and (.), then we see that=.

Thus, we recover the result (.) in [], Theorem ., for (θ,p)∈. Since the case when

(θ,p)∈follows from the case when (θ,p)∈, Theorem . provides a generalization

of the assertion (.) in [], Theorem ..

Corollary . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces,and let≤p<∞.

Then we have with equivalent norms

(15)

Proof Apply Theorem . to the parameter spacesandgiven by (.) and (.).

Theorem . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces, and assume that the

parameter spacesandsatisfy(C).Then we have with equivalent norms

(A+A,A)∩(A+A,A∩A)= (A,A),

where

g=χ(,)(s)g(s)+χ(,)(s)sg(/s).

Proof SetB= (A+A,A) andB= (A+A,A∩A). LetfA+A. Applying

Proposition . to the compatible couple (A,A), we get fB≈χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A),

using (.), we have

fB≈χ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A

. (.)

By Proposition .,

fB≈χ(,)(s)K(s,f;A,A)+χ(,)(s)sK

s–,f;A,A,

combining this with (.) and making use of (C), we arrive at fB+fB≈ f(A,A),

which completes the proof.

Remark . Theorem . generalizes the result (.) in [], Theorem ..

Corollary . Let(A,A)be a compatible couple of normed spaces,and let≤p<∞.

Then we have with equivalent norms

(A+A,A){},p+ (A+A,A∩A){},p= (A,A){},p.

Proof Apply Theorem . to the parameter spacesandgiven by (.) and (.).
