WORDS OF WELCOME / CHILDREN’S MESSAGE

OPENING HYMN “Lord Jesus Christ, Be Present Now” | CW 230 1 Lord Jesus Christ, be present now; Our hearts in true devotion bow.

Your Spirit send with grace divine, And let your truth within us shine.

2 Unseal our lips to sing your praise; Our souls to you in worship raise.

Make strong our faith; increase our light That we may know your name aright 3 Until we join the hosts that cry, “Hosanna to the Lord most high.”

Then in the light of that blest place We shall behold you face to face.

4 Glory to God the Father, Son, And Holy Spirit, Three in One!

To you, O blessed Trinity, Be praise throughout eternity!

Text: Lutherische Hand-Büchlein, 2nd ed., Altenburg, 1648; tr. Catherine Winkworth, 1827–78, alt.

PSALM 23 | CW Pg. 72 Refrain

The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.

The LORD is my shepherd,*

I shall not be in want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures;*

he leads me beside quiet waters.

He restores my soul;*

he guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Even though I walk through the valley

of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil,*

for you are with me;

your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

Refrain

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.*

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,*

and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son*

and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning,*

is now, and will be forever. Amen.

SEASONAL RESPONSE

Give thanks to the Lord; call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done.

LESSON Ephesians 2:13-22

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

M: Lord Jesus Christ, Shepherd of the Church, in the waters of baptism you have given us new life and at your table you nourish us with the food of salvation. Lead us along safe paths through the darkness of this world, dispel the terrors of death, and bring us at last to your house, where you dwell with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

HYMN “Lord Jesus Christ, My Savior Blest” | CW 362

SERMON TEXT Mark 6:30-34

The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.”

So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place. But many who saw them leaving recognized them and ran on foot from all the towns and got there ahead of them. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. So he began teaching them many things.

1 Lord Jesus Christ, my Savior blest, My Hope and my Salvation!

Lord, hear my plea: Deliver me From misery!

Your Word brings consolation.

2 Lord, as you will, So lead me still; Your mercy fails me never.

My God, I pray: Teach me your way To my last day;

From evil keep me ever.

3 I have your Word, Christ Jesus, Lord: You never will forsake me!

This will I plead In time of need. Oh, help with speed When troubles overtake me!

4 Now henceforth must I put my trust In you, O dearest Savior.

Your gracious choice, Your Word and voice, Make me rejoice Though sinful my behavior.

5 Grant, Lord, I pray, Your grace each day, That I, your name revering, Your glory see And happy be Eternally,

Before your throne appearing.

Text: Hans C. Sthen, b. c. 1540, abr.; tr. Harriet R. K. Spaeth, 1845–1925, alt.
