Keywords: Internationalization Strategy. Scientific production. Bibliometric analysis 1. Introduction

Internationalization is a widely studied topic, both in academia and in the business world. Recent studies indicate that there is a consensus in academia that internationalization theories strengthen organizations both domestically and abroad.

As a solution to the new conditions of economic competitiveness, international expansion is seen as one of the most noticeable strategies of organizations in the second half of the twentieth century. Therefore, we have several scholars who referred to the internationalization strategy as beneficial and fundamental for companies. (J. Johanson and Vahlne, 1977); (J. Johanson and Wiedersheim-Paul, 1975); (Whitelock, 2002); (Pereira, Gomes, 2017).

In this regard, Chetty; Johanson and Martín (2014) identified that internationalization has changed the business environment and organizations are currently facing a global socioeconomic context through increased competition and constant change. The complex and dynamic operating

environment has influenced management control systems due to changes in structure, size and processes in the organization.

There is a diversity of research that is directed to scientific production on the theme internationalization, which were published in national and international journals.

In recent studies they were identified in 174 articles published in the electronic library of scientific journals (SPELL), in the period 2009-2013. Within this theme, from 2010 to 2012, there was an evolution in relation to the number of articles published on the theories already consolidated, both in economic and behavioral perspective, addressed in this study (Ferreira, Cavalcanti and Gomes, 2014).

Given this context, it is emphasized that it is relevant to have a more current investigation of the diffusion of the theme in scientific productions, aiming to trigger future correlated works and / or that involve this theme so important for non-profit and profit organizations. Therefore, this research is guided by the following question: How does the theme of internationalization strategy present itself in the literature in the last 10 (ten) years?

To answer this question, the objective of this paper is to map the development of publications related to the theme of internationalization strategy from 2009 to 2018.

One way to know the main articles in this area is through bibliometric study, which is a set of research methods in the area of Information Science that quantitatively analyzes data, maps the structure of a given subject and is also a tool that analyzes the behavior of researchers and their decisions in knowledge construction (Vanti, 2002).

In light of this definition, an analysis was initiated in the Scopus database, which according to (Simioni, Dallacorte, and Jacoski, 2016) is considered the largest scientific database in the world, providing access to academic journals from various fields of knowledge and elaborate tools to analyze as well as visualize researches performed. Therefore, the search of terms is performed in the databases of the electronic library Scopus, which additionally uses the VOSviewer tool for the necessary surveys and refinements, according to the research structure.

From this information, the results are analyzed, where the relevant and viable aspects of the research are discussed, with the scope defined, in order to demonstrate the importance and emergence of the theme for current and future researchers.

Thus, the relevance of studying and discussing this subject in depth is justified, due to the increased interest of researchers and organizations for the advancement of the theme. Although it appears that there are other studies of bibliometric nature, involving this subject, it is emphasized that it is important to have a more current investigation of the diffusion of the theme in scientific productions, aiming to trigger future related works and may serve as sources for further research.

The article is structured as follows: introduction, to contextualize the article; theoretical framework, to clarify the main references on the chosen theme; methodology, to explain the research method and tools used for results analysis and finally, the conclusion and the contributions of the research, with the final outcome of the definitions reached in the article.

2. Theoretical References

In this section, we develop a theoretical framework on the management control system and internationalization, in order to substantiate the case to be researched.

2.1 Internationalization

In this first part of the theoretical framework, the process, the classification, the strategies, and the classical theories of internationalization are developed.

(3)

501 Antonio José Patrocinio Pereira and Josir Simeone Gomes 2.1.1 The Business Internationalization Process

Pereira and Gomes (2017) explain that internationalization strategies are a process conceived, when the organizations strategic planning is elaborated and implemented, so that they start operating in different countries from the one in which it is originally installed.

From another perspective, Casillas, Barbero and Sapienza (2015) stated that internationalization is a process by which a company increases the influence and awareness of international activities to conduct transactions across borders. The organization's adaptation to international markets is managed through small incremental steps. Internationalization is an ongoing process and companies increase their influence beyond borders, going beyond traditional exports and organizing production, marketing as well as selling overseas across a whole value chain.

2.1.2 Classification of Internationalized Companies

Often internationalized firms are classified, according to Bartlett and Ghoshal (1992), Canals (1994) and Dyment (1987), as follows: a) Exporting company - start of the internationalization process, the industries are in the host country; b) Multinational company - similar manufacturing of the headquarters business in its foreign branches; c) Global company - centralizes production in the country of origin and sells the products to others; d) Transnational company - seeks efficiency to achieve global competitiveness.

2.1.3 Internationalization Strategies (Typologies for Input Modes)

The internationalization strategy is the selection of the best mode of entry abroad. This decision must take into account the aspects of the target market, potential, attractiveness, size, growth, competition, distance and accessibility, among others, Whitelock (2002).

To establish international expansion, the organization can adhere to different ways of entering abroad, analyzing the risk levels and different properties of each method. These internationalization strategies, according to Dias (2012), Sarathy and Terpstra (1991), Cateora and Graham (1996) and Brito and Lorga (1999), point out different typologies and define the usual modes of entry abroad: a) Direct export: manufactures and exports its products to the final consumer abroad; b) Indirect exportation: organizations from Brazil, which buy the products for sale abroad, mainly by agents, representatives and distributors; c) Distribution Agreement: business combination between the exporter and a distributor with technical knowledge of his merchandise abroad; d) Licensing / franchise: the licensing firm authorizes, by means of a contract, the licensed firm, in the marketing of its products, without altering the original brand characteristics, against a royalty payment; e) Sales subsidiary:

Through a sales office, the manufacturing industry establishes its physical existence abroad; f) Own distribution center: the exporter discloses its merchandise abroad; g) Strategic alliances and joint ventures: a consortium or collaboration agreement between local and foreign companies that share expenses and risks; h) Merger: the union of two or more firms of the same or complementary branch, with strategic intention to increase market share; i) Acquisition: a company acquires the controlling interest of another company that is already established in the country, and only one of them will maintain its identity; and j) Greenfield: setting up a subsidiary from scratch.

Root (1994) summarized in three (3) distinct typologies of foreign entry: by exports (direct and indirect); contracts (licensing, franchising, agreements and contracts) and investments (new ventures, acquisitions and joint ventures).

2.1.4 Classic Internationalization Theory: An Economic and Behavioral Approach

Classical theories on internationalization are delimited under two approaches or approaches to thinking, classified as: economic and organizational (behavioral or procedural).

(4)

Internationalization Strategy: Bibliometric Analysis of National and International

Scientific Productions of the Last Ten Years 502

2.1.4.1. Theory from the Point of View of the Economic Approach

The focus of this theory is to interpret internationalization decision processes as rational, objective and focused, on optimal resource allocation, minimizing transaction costs or aiming at competitive advantage. It contemplates 4 (four) main theories: the theory of the market power; the product cycle theory, the internalization theory and the eclectic paradigm. And they are summarized in Table 5, which interprets the decision-making processes of internationalization that have developed from a holistic perspective.

In Market Power theory, economist Hymer (1960) was considered the principal representative of this theory when discussing the drivers of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI).

The principal author of the Product Cycle theory is Vernon (1966). Companies facing maturity stages in domestic markets could extend the life cycle of their products.

The theory of internalization would be the theory of transaction costs applied to international business, as it aims to analyze how to enter another country, minimizes the transaction costs of the company. Buckley (1976) and Casson (1976) rely on the concepts of Williamson's Transaction Cost Theory (1985) to justify the existence of the theory of internalization.

Finally, the developer of the Dunning Eclectic Paradigm theory (1998), also known as the OLI theory, groups the principles of transaction cost theory with those of industrial economics and internalization, proposing to elucidate the extent, form and pattern. international manufacturing, according to three categories of advantages: 1) (O) wnership, ownership advantages of specific assets;

2) (L) ocation (Localization) advantages that the environment has on the company's competences; 3) (I) nternalization (Internationalization), advantages that result from the company securing activities in another country through its own means.

2.1.4.2. Theory from the Point of View of Behavioral Approach

While under the economic approach Internationalization Theories were elaborated with a macro view, an alternative approach was conceived within the administration by suggesting considerations about the process by which a firm enters abroad and about the attitudes and perceptions acting. of its executives, termed as behavioral or procedural approach (Barreto, 2002).

This approach or approach points to greater subjectivity compared to the economic approach, admitting a behavioral aspect, perceiving internationalization, based on managers' attitudes and perceptions. Included in this approach are the theory of the Uppsala School (or Uppsala model) and the Nordic School of International Business, shown below:

The Uppsala school theory was developed by Swedish scholars in the 1970s, derived from the Nordic School researchers. These studies were prepared by Johanson and Vahlne (1990). An important feature introduced by the Uppsala School was the way of doing international business, which in addition to the economic aspects, should look under the theory of Organizational Behavior.

In this Uppsala model, internationalization represents a process of incremental adjustments to the company's and its environment variables, identifying the stages of international involvement: stage 1 - no regular export practices; Stage 2 - exportation through independent representatives; stage 3 - opening of a foreign sales subsidiary; stage 4 - overseas operating unit. Recently, Johanson and Vahlne (2009) published an article reviewing the concept of behavioral perspective elaborated by Uppsala School scholars.

The model points to another relevant factor: the perception of psychic distance between the country of origin and the exporting countries in the process of internationalization of the firm (Hemais, 2004).

Psychological distance is defined as the differences between two countries' values, languages, management practices, industrial development, and education that make agreements with culturally closer countries. A very large cultural distance, following this conception, would make it impossible to make agreements abroad.

(5)

503 Antonio José Patrocinio Pereira and Josir Simeone Gomes Regarding the Nordic School's international business studies, Andersson (2000) is the lead author. In his studies, the role of the entrepreneur has greater emphasis on the process that distinguishes between three types of entrepreneurs: the technical, the marketing and the structural.

In order to present the main theories of internationalization, under an economic and behavioral approach, we identify, in table 1, a synthesis elaborated by Hemais (2004), highlighting the essential authors and their foundations.

3. Methodology

In this section, the methodological procedure is developed to support the study.

3.1. Methodological Procedure

Upon entering the field of scientific research, it appears that there are several classifications of typologies applicable by various authors, as well as the results thereof. (Beuren et al., 2013), proposes that the typologies be grouped into three categories: objective research, which includes exploratory, descriptive and explanatory research; procedures research, which addresses the case study, survey, bibliographic, documentary, participant and experimental research; and research on the problem approach, which includes qualitative and quantitative research.

Rescuing (Beuren et al., 2013), as for the objectives, falls into a methodological category called descriptive research, because it transcribes, describes, interprets and explanatory in clarifying the result of the study. As for the technical procedure, it is a bibliographical research, because it considers the literature already made public in relation to the subject of study.

On the other hand, regarding the approach, this research is defined as quantitative, since it seeks to "classify the relationship between variables to ensure the accuracy of results" and "requires the use of resources and statistical techniques", (Prodanov and Freitas, 2013).

Internationalization Strategy: Bibliometric Analysis of National and International

Scientific Productions of the Last Ten Years 504

Given the quantitative facts, it is a study of bibliometric analysis, which aims to identify and analyze the profile of scientific production and the evolution of the theme in question. Bibliometric studies are useful to identify the characteristics of the area of knowledge in research, in order to deepen the researcher's knowledge about the subject studied and, subsequently, the scientific community (Valmorbida & Ensslin, 2013).

Finally, as pointed out (Guedes, V.; Borschiver, 2005), bibliometric analysis can assist in the creation and management of knowledge, allowing them to explore and create relationships between them. In this work, this application can facilitate the understanding of the subject and fill in possible gaps of existing knowledge.

4. Results Analysis and Discussion

This section aims to show the survey of bibliographic and bibliometric analysis and the results related to internationalization strategies.

According to Yin (2015), the following tables, charts, graphs make the analysis and results clearer and more objective as well as easy to interpret. The results of these analyzes were structured in the following steps: Bibliographic review: was performed from the search for books; theses and dissertations; periodicals on internationalization strategy and some of these references were selected to compose the literature review, Bibliometric survey: refinement of the research; Keyword research;

Identification of journals with the largest number of articles published on the theme; Analysis of the origin and typology of articles; Identification of authors with the largest number of publications Identification of authors with the largest number of citations and main areas of knowledge, Comparative study between Brazil and abroad: A comparative analysis was made between the amount published in Brazil and that published by authors from other countries, with the aim of identifying how Brazil is facing others.

From this, at first, it used the charts and tables available in the Scopus database itself and auxiliary tools such as Excel to organize and tabulate the data. In addition to the information collected from the Capes portal with the Scopus database, the VOSviewer program was used in more depth by creating maps based on bibliographic data, due to its ability to work with a significant amount of data and develop various types of analysis, as this application creates intuitive images that help you search through data analysis.

One of the main sources of bibliometric data is Scopus. This database comprises more than 20,000 national and international scientific journals. Like the Web of Science (WoS), Scopus also indexes cited references and citing / citing links between publications in the database. Similar to Web of Science, it also features broad coverage of a variety of metadata, including authors, affiliations, bibliographic data, and so on. Among the advantages of Scopus, we can mention the wide coverage of journals, countries and languages. As for limitations, we may mention the questionable quality of some of the metadata contained therein as well as the shorter time coverage of publications (database coverage begins in 1996), FRANCESCHINI ET AL. (2016).

The VOSviewer software, which is based on a two-dimensional mapping technique defined as VOS, is intended as an alternative to the Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) technique. In the areas of bibliometrics and scientometrics, the technique for building science maps has challenged researchers for decades. These maps may exhibit relationships between authors, journals, documents, or keywords and are constructed based on techniques that calculate citation, co-citation, bibliographic coupling, or co-occurrence (Eck and Waltman, 2010).

In addition to the map based on bibliographic data, VOSviewer was used to create another map, based on text data, extracted from the title and abstract fields of the research articles. In these articles, we read the terms most commonly used in the abstracts, and in the titles. In some cases, to identify the

(7)

505 Antonio José Patrocinio Pereira and Josir Simeone Gomes desired information, it was necessary to read their texts in full (introduction, theoretical framework, methodology and conclusions).

Regarding the refinement of the research, in quantitative terms, it is shown in table 2, that the results regarding the number of publications were decreasing at each researched stage. In steps 1, 2 and 3, the words searched were: internationalization with 7,555 published papers; international business, with 3,223 articles published and foreign trade, with 1,562 published documents, respectively, which presented very broad and generic samples, deviating from the objective to be studied.

On the other hand, step 6 is very specific, and is restricted only to internationalization of firms and not to internationalization strategies as a whole.

Given this, steps 4 and 5 remained and it is observed that the results found in these research stages are similar, not changing the number of articles, despite the consultation of other keywords, as they are considered as similar. Therefore, it was decided to use for the purposes of developing the analysis, step 4, because it meets the research objective in the search for answers to the study. In order to have a broader reach on the topic of interest for the study, we chose to use search filters such as: i.

Keywords: Title-Summary-Keywords (TITLE-ABS-KEY): internationalization strategy AND (e) TITLE-ABS-KEY, internationalization strategies AND TITLE-ABS -KEY: internationalization strategies; ii. Document type: final article in the press (AND DOCTYPE (ar), final and article in Press;

Table 3 below shows, in quantitative terms, the results of each step. For this, three columns were generated: one on a worldwide scale, one with only articles from Brazil and another with the total produced in each stage. It is noticed that with each new stage, the number of publications has been decreasing, as the filter becomes more and more specific, as previously shown.
