At the last meeting of the Finance Committee, it was mentioned that with the church closed for our renovations and the hall being used for live streaming our weekday Masses, the hall looked tired and in need of a facelift. At the meeting, members of the Brazilian community offered their professional experience as painters and someone else offered to cover the cost of the supplies for the improvements. On Saturday, November 28th, several members of the community gathered early in the day to tackle the project. They went right to work in painting the hall after some of them had come in the day after Thanksgiving to patch the holes and prepare the walls for the painting. Other members of the community arranged to bring food and water for them during the day as well as a well earned lunch break. By 3 pm, the crew had finished and were cleaning their brushes and rollers and managing to put away the left over paint to be used for the small hall at a later date. This is a great example of stewardship. One providing the financial support to purchase the paint that a professional got a their discount, others providing food and nourishment, and those pictured here giving their time and talent to complete the task. (9) Information A Message from Father Peter Dear Parishioners, This week our liturgical calendar marks two different celebrations to honor the example and the witness of Our Lady. The dedication of the basilica in Jerusalem which is traditionally the site of the home of Saints Anne and Joachim, where Our Lady grew took place on September 8th. As a result, that anniversary is celebrated as the feast of the birth of Our Lady. Nine months before that date is December 8th, the feast of her Immaculate Conception. This is the title that Our Lady used to reveal herself to Saint Bernadette of Lourdes before it was a proclaimed dogma of the Church as well as the title she shared with Saint Catherine Laboure at the convent in Paris when she revealed the Miraculous Medal to her. It is also the title under which Our Lady is the patroness of the United States of America. As a result, this feast is traditionally a holy day of obligation here in the USA, although this year given the limitations of the COVID19, the obligation has been lifted. Nonetheless, this important feast is one that reminds us of the role that Our Lady had in God’s plan of salvation as we prepare to celebrate the nativity of Our Savior. As Eve, the first woman made her choice without sin, so Our Lady was in a similar position, she too was given the chance to choose to do the will of God or to sin because of her own selfishness, pride or fear. With the same opportunity, Our Lady chose to do the will of God and the Word took flesh in her immaculate womb, a vessel without sin to receive the one who is sinless. By this, we who have sinned are redeemed and given the promise to rise above our sin and to share the life gained for us by Christ in his resurrection. The second feast is on Saturday, December 12th, that recalls the fourth and final apparition of Our Lady to a young Incan prince on the hills outside of modern Mexico City. On this day, she provided the sign demanded by Bishop Zumárraga to ascertain her request to build a church in her honor on the hill of Tepeyac, the former site of a pagan shrine. St. Juan Diego thought the sign was the roses that he had picked at her direction and that she had arranged in his tilma, unaware that when he opened it in the presence of the bishop and the flowers cascaded to the floor, Our Lady’s image was forever imprinted on his cloak. Modern science cannot decipher how the image was created, but microscopic investigations have proven that it is probably best understood as a photographic image of her. This patroness of our country, and her dual feasts that celebrate the sacredness of life from its conception are an important and compelling reminder of our call to pray for the future of our country, to plead for Our Lady’s powerful intercession as we face the need for a peaceful transition of power from one president to another, and with it the challenges of racial inequality, violence in our streets, an increasing incidence of this pandemic, and a serious threat to the protections that have been gained in recent years for the unborn and their right to life. As we wish this year to be gone, we should be anxious of what is still to come in a new year. Let us ask our spiritual mother to watch over and care for us as her beloved children and to protect and lead our country in the days ahead. . A Look Back …A Visit from a Hometown Bishop Assisting Bishop Shaughnessy were Fr. Parent, C.M. of Medford as Deacon, Fr. Boissoneault of Medford as subdeacon, the deacons of honor were Fr. Richard Murphy of Uxbridge and Fr. Julius Valentinelli of Sacred Heart, Milford, and the Very Rev. William Longeran, rector of the Marist College in Washington, DC, served as the high priest. The preacher of the Mass was a former curate of the parish, the Rt. Rev. John Phelan of Worcester. . Msgr. Phelan preached eloquently and fittingly for the occasion although the news reports give no indication of the theme or topic. During the Mass, the bishop spoke briefly, expressing his gratitude to Fr. Riordan for his many courtesies and the hospitality afforded to the bishop in being able to have his first public Mass in his home church with his parents attending. Following the Mass, all were invited to the parish school for a luncheon and reception to greet the new bishop that was organized by the Saint Mary’s High Alumni Association. Fr. Riordan served as toastmaster and remarks were offered by Judge John Swift, Supreme Director of the Knights of Columbus, and a Milford native, Dr. Thomas Nugent, and the visiting clergy. From Milford, Bishop Shaughnessy would travel by rail across the country to arrive for his installation as the fourth Bishop of Seattle on October 10, 1933. Once his train entered the state of Washington, he was greeted at every stop by members of his new flock to welcome him. When he arrived at King Street Station in the city, he was taken directly to the Cathedral of Saint James which had been packed with children from across the diocese to joyfully welcome him and receive his first blessing. A professor before entering the seminary just before he turned thirty, he had expected to spend his life in Washington, DC, as an academician until Pope Pius XI tapped him on July 3, 1933 to relocate to the West Coast to lead in a place he had never been. He chose as his episcopal motto a single word, that of Our Lady, Fiat, her answer to the angel Gabriel at the Annunciation. The task ahead of him was fierce. He knew no one in Seattle, he was unfamiliar with the area, and he followed Bishop O’Dea who had led the church in Seattle for 37 years and was deeply loved. Bishop Shaughnessy endeared himself as well as he would lead the diocese through the depression and make it financially stable for decades, through a world war when he condemned the discrimination against Japanese Americans and opposed the war. He supported the formation of Serra International and served as its first chaplain. In a 1941 Easter sermon, he sharply criticized Wendell Willkie, the presidential candidate. Willkie demanded an apology. Bishop Shaughnessy responded that Willkie was not “the man he used to be, and in fact he never was … And speaking of ‘apology,’ Mr. Willkie, I believe that you owe one to your party, to those who voted for you, and to the whole nation.” A year later, the bishop would return to celebrate with his parents their golden wedding anniversary on August 2, 1934, and he would be present for the dedication of Sacred Heart Church in Hopedale on November 10, 1935. In 1945, he suffered a cerebral hemorrhage from which he never fully recovered. On May 18, 1950, a day before his 63rd birthday, he entered his eternal reward. Page 3.

(13) Religious Education . . The more quickly we allow God’s Spirit to work within us, the sooner God will transform our world. We depend on God for “new heavens and a new earth,” but when God sees that we are preparing ourselves and helping others to prepare for this transformaon, he will hasten the day of his Son’s return. . SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT The Path . God of power and might, you sent the prophets Elijah, Isaiah, and John the Bapst to call your people to the path of righteousness. When we wander off, you seek us out and lead us back. Guide us onto the right path. Remove the obstacles that block our way. Strengthen us to connue forward in faith and hope. Protect us from all that endangers us. Compel us to support each other when we stumble or falter. Help us to walk the path of holiness more quickly every day unl we are running with joy into your kingdom. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. . Sunday, December 6, 2020 Hasten the Day . Today’s Readings: Isaiah 40:1ʹ5, 9ʹ11; Psalm 85:9ʹ10, 11ʹ12, 13ʹ14; 2 Peter 3:8ʹ14; Mark 1:1ʹ8. All three readings today urge us to parcipate in the compleon of God’s reign. God tells Isaiah to speak words of consolaon. God’s people had sinned, and as a result they had been defeated by a foreign naon and scaered from their homeland. God declares that he has forgiven them and is bringing them safely back. The glorious restoraon of God’s people, however, will only be possible if they turn back to God and undertake the journey home. John the Bapst declares that the Lord’s day is coming whether people want it to or not, but he also insists that people can prepare themselves for it. They can acknowledge their sins so as to receive God’s mercy and be empowered by God’s Spirit when the Lord comes. Remarkably, in our Second Reading, we are told not only to prepare, but that by striving to live as holy, faithful people, we bring God’s kingdom closer to compleon. For those who wonder why Christ has not yet returned in glory, St. Peter replies that God is giving us me to repent. . . This Week at Home Monday, December 7 St. Ambrose of Milan Today’s Readings: Isaiah 35:1ʹ10; Psalm 85:9ab and 10, 11ʹ 12, 13ʹ4; Luke 5:17ʹ26. God will heal his people of all that afflicts them so that they will return to their homeland and begin their lives anew. The man whom Jesus heals in the Gospel passage is also given a new life. How will we live differently when we encounter God’s healing and mercy? St. Ambrose’s life changed dramacally when the people of Milan asked him to become their bishop. He wasn’t even bapzed, but he accepted the new path that God laid out for him. May we do the same. Tuesday, December 8 . Immaculate Concep4on . Today’s Readings: Genesis 3:9ʹ20; Psalm 98:1ʹ4; Ephesians 1:3ʹ6; 11ʹ12; Luke 1:26ʹ38. Our belief that God kept Mary free from sin in order to bear the sinless Son of God sets Mary apart from us. For some, Mary is too perfect to be relatable. The Second Reading reminds us that God planned for all of us to be holy. God overshadows us with his Spirit so that we, too, will live according to his will. Carefully read through today’s Gospel. Then imagine the angel Gabriel appearing to you. What does God ask of you? How do you respond? . Page 5.

(14) Religious Education . . Wednesday, December 9 Yoked . Friday, December 11 Wisdom . Today’s Readings: Isaiah 40:25ʹ31; Psalm 103:1ʹ2, 3ʹ4, 8 and 10; Mahew 11:28ʹ30 When Jesus urges us to yoke ourselves to him, we might think we are the oxen and he is walking behind us, steering us. Instead, he probably means that he is yoked alongside us, sharing the weight of whatever we are pulling. As we hear in the First Reading, God so lightens our burdens and strengthens us that we seem to have wings. Every few hours, imagine Jesus walking beside you, listening and supporng you. . In the Old Testament, God’s wisdom is personified as Lady Wisdom. She dwells among people, teaches them, and draws them down the path of righteousness. Jesus both teaches and embodies God’s wisdom. Despite the crowd’s refusal to believe it, Jesus is doing the work of God. He remains with us today, guiding us down the path of righteousness. The Book of Proverbs 10Ͷ29 is a collecon of wise sayings. Choose several that apply to you, and bring them into your prayer. Today’s Readings: Isaiah 48:17ʹ19; Psalm 1:1ʹ6; Mahew 11:16ʹ19 . Saturday, December 12 Our Lady of. Thursday, December 10 Obstacles . Guadalupe . Today’s Readings: Zechariah 2:14ʹ17 or Revelaon 11:19a; 12:1ʹ6a, 10ab; Luke 1:26ʹ38 or Luke 1:39ʹ47. . Today’s Readings: Isaiah 41:13ʹ20; Psalm 145:1 and 9, 10ʹ 11, 12ʹ13ab; Mahew 11:11ʹ15. . . . The angel greeted Mary by calling her “favored one.” This term implied that Mary had a patron who had commissioned her for some kind of work. Since Mary was a young woman from an insignificant village and God was her patron, she was understandably worried about what she could do for God. As it turned out, she could do a great deal. Just as God favored her, so she revealed God’s favor to others, such as the indigenous people of Mexico. What do you need Our Lady of Guadalupe to reveal to you? . God tells his people that they will cut through the mountains that block their path as they return home aNer being scaered by war. This me of renewal points ahead to the kingdom that Jesus brings. Those who strive to enter God’s kingdom will also face obstacles, but their faithful perseverance will bring them into the fullness of God’s reign. Offer people a glimpse of God’s kingdom by volunteering at or donang to a local food pantry. . Page 6.

(16) Comunidade Portuguesa e Brasileira. A visita do Senhor é iminente.
