Friday 28th May 2021

Dear Parents and Students,

Good afternoon – I hope this newsletter finds you safe and well:

Thank you to everyone for all their hard work and effort this term, it has been a challenging one for all of us given the restrictions, GCSE and A Level tests as well as some unseasonal weather that has restricted some activities.

Congratulations to all our Royal Mail stamp competition entrants in Y7 & Y8. It was great to see so many entries of a really high quality, fingers crossed for some prize winners.

This week, we say goodbye to Y13 and Y11 but have celebrated their time with us through assemblies and prize giving. We wish them all the best of luck in the next stage of their educational journey and look forward to seeing Y11 for our sixth form activities next half term. Please note results days are: Y13 10th August and

Y11 on 12th August, details to follow about arrangements nearer the time. We now turn our focus to Y10 and

Y12 who have LP assessments coming soon. These are very important preparations for external exams which we currently believe to be running as normal in summer 2022.

Looking forward, Y10 will have their ‘Taste of RH6’ on 22nd June when they will be sixth formers for the day

as part of their careers education. This is a great opportunity to think ahead about subjects to be studied in the future.

A reminder to all parents and children – the rules on mobile phones, expectations regarding school uniform, makeup and jewellery have not changed and have been communicated to students and parents on a number of occasions and in various formats. Please ensure that your child has a full school uniform and that they are sent to school wearing it correctly. In addition, please reiterate the importance of following the mobile phone policy. We will be having a renewed focus on expectations and standards at the start of next half term to ensure that everyone looks smart and professional.

Have a good half term holiday.

3 YEAR 13 LEAVERS

Wednesday 26th May 2021 marked the last day for our students, most of whom have been part of the

Rainhill family for nearly 7 years. For students new to our family it marked the end of 2 years study here in the Sixth Form. We celebrated with a wonderful breakfast and a leavers assembly and the students, tearfully, left us to celebrate the end of this chapter of their life in their own way.

It was a lovely occasion and we wish our students all the very best for the future and that they continue to keep in touch and come back to inspire our younger students. The next important milestone for them will be Tuesday 10th August 2021 when they collect their exam results. More information about this will follow at

the end of June.

In the meantime, may I take this opportunity to thank everybody involved in making their journey through the Sixth Form a memorable one.

Best wishes from the Sixth Form Team Mr Cunningham

Director of RH6

YEAR 11 LEAVERS

Today was the day we had to say goodbye to our Year 11 students. All week long they have conducted themselves brilliantly and today was no different; high spirits, with plenty of tears. This morning saw the students sign each other's shirts and then attend our leavers brunch, followed by ice cream and photos. We then headed to the leavers assembly where a great time was had by all. Our Head Students lead the way, handing over to our sports prefects and then on to two fantastic performances from the Year 11 band. The students had some wonderful messages of praise and wise words from their form tutors, and plenty of laughs and tears were shed during the "Class of 21 memories" photo montage. We are so proud of all our students who no doubt have all faced their own individual challenges this last year yet were here and on the other side. We can't wait to see them all return on Results day in August to share more happy memories. We wish our leavers the very best for the summer and the future beyond - and to the vast majority we are looking forward to seeing them commence their post 16 studies at Rainhill Sixth.

6 PASTORAL INFORMATION

Attendance

As restrictions lift, all of us will be starting to think about planning and taking holidays both in this country and abroad:

Due to both national lockdowns and time out of school due to self-isolation during the autumn term, can we please ask that you do not book term time holidays and ensure that your child is in school every day until the end of the school year:

The final week of term is a partial school week it is important that your child/children attend school up until and including Wednesday 21st July:

Attendance links directly to student progress and outcomes, your child will not fulfil their potential if they have time away from school:

Facemasks

Although students are no longer required to wear face masks on the school site, they still must wear a facemask on public transport/school buses:

Mobile Phones

Since students have returned to school on the 8th March, it is clear to see that many students have become

more reliant on their mobile phones during lockdown:

Mobile Phones are not permitted to be used, seen or turned on the school site: They must not be seen from ‘door to door’ – from when pupils enter the school site at the start of the day until they leave the school site at the end of the day:

If a student breaks these rules the following applies:

1st Confiscation • Parent must collect, remains in school office until this point

• Upon collection of the phone, parents will meet with your child’s Year Student Manager or Year Progress Leader

• A letter detailing next steps will be issued 2nd Confiscation • 1-day internal exclusion

• Parent must collect, remains in office property until this point • Parent meets with Key Stage Progress Leader

• Student no longer permitted to bring phone on site • A letter detailing next steps will be issued

3rd Confiscation • 1-day fixed term exclusion

• Reintegration meeting with Mrs Munro, Deputy Headteacher • Next steps discussed

The full policy and the school rationale for not allowing mobiles phones to be seen/used on site can be found

here.

7 EMOTIONAL WELLBEING & MENTAL HEALTH

Supporting your child’s Mental Health

As a school, we have invested time both pre and post pandemic on developing awareness and understanding of mental health and emotional wellbeing:

Many parents get in touch with us to discuss concerns around their child’s emotional health: Since the pandemic started last March, more and more parents have contacted us:

KOOTH and Barnardo’s are two services that can be accessed to support and intervene with your child’s emotional wellbeing and mental health, should it be required:

Barnardo’s

The Barnardo’s Resilience Service is a new service that has been introduced; its primary aim is to support 11-16-year-old children who need intervention to improve their emotional wellbeing support/mental health such as:

• Low mood • Low self esteem • Anxiety

• Low resilience/coping skills • Poor emotional regulation

Please click here for details on how you can make a referral: As a school, we will be utilising this service and making referrals for identified students.

Parental Drop In

The service offers each secondary school in St Helens a parental drop in each half term: The first drop in will be on Friday 2nd July 9-12am (by appointment only)

If you would like to talk to the school allocated Barnardo’s Resilience team worker, please contact your child’s Year Student Manager to book a drop-in slot:

KOOTH

Kooth is a service that we regularly signpost with our students: They are holding two parental events on June 8th and June 23rd, please click here to find out more about what the service offers.

SAFEGUARDING – TIKTOK

We have been alerted to a TikTok trend where young people are pretending to have their tongue pierced: Children are using magnetic bead/balls and consequently swallowing them:

We will off course raise this with students during tutorial/assemblies this week: Mrs Munro, Deputy Headteacher:

8 MENTAL HEALTH WEEK

Rainhill High had a special guest during Mental health week; Larry Meyler, the author of 'Being Brave': An Irish boy with a childhood haunted by grief and bubbling anxiety, who fights through depression in his adulthood: Despite the internal darkness that plagues him, one consistent positive thread runs through his life, the refusal to give up and the refusal to lose faith in love, even with a shattered heart :

Larry ran sessions with our students to discuss his rollercoaster life and how he used different coping strategies to survive: Students were chosen who we felt would be able to act as Mental Health

Ambassadors for the school: The sessions were heart felt and allowed students to be open and honest about various issues around mental health such as the impact of social media:

Some comments from students are below:

“I will remember many things from the session with Larry: However, the main thing I will take from it is to do things I want to do and not for other people: I also remember that it’s fine if you don’t know what path you want to take in the future, just do the things which you enjoy and make you happy:”

“What I will remember most about Larry's session is how he gave us ways to overcome mental illness : I will use those techniques to help me when things get tough:”

14 YEAR 10 LP3 EXAMS – updated

The Year 10 LP exams begin on Tuesday 8th June

Please note that we have had to amend the timetabled LP3 examinations because of Covid restrictions now limiting us to half a year group at a time being able to take an exam. The same examination papers will be taken, although some will now take place in classrooms.

• Examinations in the sports hall and arts theatre will take place from Tuesday 8th to Friday 11th June –

a timetable is attached. Bespoke timetables and a seating plan are available for your child on Edulink.

• Examinations in classrooms will take place from Monday 14th June during that week – a timetable will

be sent out on Monday 7th June.

• Pupils entitled to extra time will receive this

Our Year 10 LP3 examinations will start just after the Whit holiday: They are important to help us identify where gaps in learning exist; gaps that we can then plan to address next year: It’s also a valuable opportunity for your child to experience the process of sitting examinations in the hall as we prepare for Year 11 and GCSEs:

We have a range of activities planned to support your child during this period as part of our ‘Year 11

Transition’ package: In parallel to this, subjects will be setting revision homework over the next fortnight and further guidance on this is below:

In order for these examinations to run smoothly, can you please take note of the following points: • Students who have an EHCP or are entitled to access arrangements (extra time, reader, scribe or

laptop) will be accommodated according to identified need: • Students will receive seat numbers via Edulink before each exam

• Students need to make their way to the exam hall for 8:50 for morning examinations and 1:00 for afternoon exams

• We do conduct these exams in accordance with JCQ regulations

▪ Water is permitted to be taken into the hall: This has to be in a clear bottle with no label ▪ Phones and apple-watches are not permitted in the exam hall: These must be handed in on

entry to the hall – students who are found to have a phone or apple/i-watch on them in the hall risk disqualification

▪ Pencil cases have to be clear/transparent

▪ Please ensure that your child brings the correct equipment for each exam

Support and revision hints and tips

Please click here to watch a short clip with hints and tips from our current Year 11 students on how they have coped with exams and how they have revised, along with other ‘top tips’ from the experts:

COVID-19 TESTING FOR STUDENTS

Testing of students

• Students should continue to self-test twice per week and follow the guidance below regarding reporting your result:

• If you would prefer your child’s testing to be done in school then please email

covid@rainhillhighschool:org:uk starting their name and form:

• Comprehensive guidance on self-testing is contained in the ‘Instructions for Use’ leaflet, which comes with the test kit:

• LFD test kits for students will be replenished every 3 x weeks – they will be handed out in form time and should only be used by the student they are handed to; family members are able to get test kits from local testing centres and pharmacies:

RESULTS OF LFD COVID TEST

If negative –

• You need to report the outcome of the test via testregister:co:uk/login • You can continue to attend school (work):

If positive –

• You need to report the outcome of the test via testregister:co:uk/login

• You will need to inform school and self-isolate in line with the stay-at- home guidance: • Your household members must isolate for 10 days as well:

• You will also need to arrange a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test to confirm the result: If this PCR test result is negative, and you have no symptoms of COVID-19, you and your household can stop isolating:

Why take part?

Taking part in testing is voluntary and all students will be able to attend school/Sixth Form whether they take part in testing or not: We would strongly encourage all students to take part: Testing at home will allow your child and other students to attend school/Sixth Form as safely as possible: Please contact myself, as our COVID Coordinator, if you have any questions or concerns about home testing –

COVID@rainhillhighschool:org:uk Thank you for your support:

CONTACT TESTING

Rainhill High School and Sixth Form will be taking part in a new study called “Daily Contact Testing” which is being run by the Department for Health and Social Care through NHS Test and Trace:

Normally, when we find a person in a school or college has COVID-19, the whole group of people that have been in close contact with that person have to go home and self-isolate for 10 days to stop the virus spreading: This can mean lots of people miss time in school or college, but it is important to do this to protect the other people in school and at home:

This study will test if students and staff can continue to come to school safely after they have been in close contact with a person who is positive for COVID-19, by testing them daily for 7 days with rapid tests: Each day the test is negative they will be able to take part in school activities only, they will need to continue

self-isolating when not at school: Prevention measures intended to reduce transmission – LFD is an additional tool that contributes to reducing risk:

FACEMASKS

The Government has updated its guidance regarding facemasks, which takes effect from Monday 17th May:

“From 17th May, in line with Step 3 of the roadmap, face coverings will no longer be recommended for pupils

in classrooms or communal areas in all schools: Face coverings will also no longer be recommended for staff in classrooms: In all schools we continue to recommend that face coverings should be worn by staff and visitors in situations outside of classrooms where social distancing is not possible (for example, when moving around in corridors and communal areas):”

Regarding transport to and from school - “Children and young people aged 11 and over must still wear a face

covering on public transport: In accordance with advice from PHE, they must also wear a face covering when travelling on dedicated transport to secondary school or college: This does not apply to children and young people who are exempt from wearing face coverings:”
