Introduction
• IT Departments are responsible for the datacentre, desktop, application, workplace mobility and device strategy. A desktop delivery strategy will be closely tied to the application strategy.
• Desktop delivery technology has evolved considerably in the last ten years and now more than ever the number of options and complexity can be overwhelming.
• Today’s session focus is Microsoft Remote Desktop Services is to help
navigate the desktop delivery technology and options from Microsoft.
• There is no single right choice for desktops… • Or is there?
What are Remote Desktop Services?
• Session-based presentation virtualization segment of Microsoft’s virtualization technologies
• Enables centralized application management
• Helps keep the data in the datacenter
• Has proved to be very popular in the Jersey markets address bandwidth and satellite offices.
• Provides connection brokering for Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)
Remote Desktop Session Hosts
What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure?
• Server based virtual desktops underpin VDI, there are two
RD Virtualization Host
What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure?
• Provides virtual machine-based, centralized desktops for individual users that can be fully customized based on user profiles
• Allows users to perform specialized tasks that require administrator access to their desktop • Enables users to access their personalized
desktop from any computer while retaining the last saved state
Personal Virtual Desktop
What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure?
• Provides virtual machine-based, centralized desktops based on a pool of virtual machines that are shared by multiple users
• Allows users to perform standardized routine tasks and have access to common applications (such as Microsoft Office)
• Rolls back the state upon logoff to provide a “clean” desktop for the next user’s session, but the previous user’s state can be saved offline Pooled

Architecture
Key Challenges
Performance:
Login times and general application performance should be consistent (they only notice when it’s not good!) Network bandwidth and latency
User Experience (UK):
Multiple devices, multiple locations, one experience.
Application Compatibility:
Application X interferes with application Y, application Z only works with legacy OS.
User Density:
The number of users per virtual machine or physical server, greater
Systems and User Management:
Simplified management tools for administrators.
Fair Share

Helps ensure high performance across user virtual machines and sessions
Apply to both sessions and virtual machines
Dynamically distributes resources (bandwidth, CPU, and I/O)
User Profile Disk
Enable personalization on pooled virtual
machines or sessions
Store user data and settings on a separate virtual hard disk
Simplify deployment of lower-cost VDIs (pooled virtual machines and sessions)
VDI Session Host
Personalization with User Profile Disk
User Profile Disk with pooled virtual machine collections
User Profile Disk with remote desktop
session host collections
What should I deploy?
User Profile Disk
With every virtual machine pool and remote desktop session host collection
User environment virtualization
To apply roaming settings across collections
Folder Redirection
To apply roaming user data across collections
To centralize user data backup
Benefits
Available with pooled virtual machine collections and remote desktop session host collections
Stores all user settings and data
Contains roaming user profile, Folder Redirection cache, and user
environment virtualization
Roams with user within collection Appears as a local disk and improves application compatibility
The Rich User Experience
Dynamically detect network conditions and tune experience RemoteFX for WAN Enable access to locally attached devices in remote desktops USB redirection Support multitouch, new WindowsExperience, and Start menu/screen integration Seamless experience GPU support Support both physical and software GPUs
RemoteFX Over LAN or WAN
Hardware and software GPUs Rich multimedia USB redirection Multitouch WAN acceleration Single sign-on Corporate LAN
RemoteFX delivers a consistently rich
user experience to users over LAN or WAN
(regardless of deployment model)
Internet or WAN
GPU Choices
• CPU-Emulated DirectX 11 software GPU provides 3D capabilities to sessions and VMs at high scale
– Optimized for knowledge worker workloads, such as Office, Web Browsing – Highest scale for Session Host and VDI
• RemoteFX vGPU provides a virtualized hardware-accelerated DirectX 11 GPU for VDI, optimized for
– Best performance for 3D graphics-intensive applications
– Best experience with full shading, animations and transitions
What’s new for RDS in Server 2012 R2?

Summary
Don’t focus on products or vendors! Focus on users, performance,
monitoring and training for staff! Make sure the solution works well every year and doesn’t degrade over time.
