UNIT OUTLINE

Dynamics of Business Intensive

Business is viewed first by examining key external factors that influence its development: the economy, government, law, politics and international business. Students will study the internal organisation of business, highlighting major issues associated with the key management functions such as marketing, finance, information systems and operations. Practical applications of business principles and current events will be emphasised. The second half of this unit focuses on the tools – particularly financial, marketing and information systems – required by businesses in the twenty-first century. Consumer-oriented marketing, investment basics, the securities market and e-business are representative of the contents covered to help students demystify the complexities of the business world.

Rules & Regulations for Financial

Advisory Services

This unit is to ensure potential financial advisers/representatives possess the requisite knowledge of the regulatory framework, including the laws and regualtions, and associated codes, notices, practice notes and guidelines governing the capital markets and life insurance intermediaries in Singapore. The contents include:

• The Regulatory Bodies and Associations • The Regulations

• Conduct of Business • Financial Needs Analysis

• The CPF Minimum Sum Scheme, CPF Investement Scheme (CPFIS) and Supplementary Retirement Scheme (SRS) • Guidelines on Money Laundering

Strategic Cost Analysis 1

This unit examines cost determination, cost behaviour, costing systems and introduces the budgeting process. Emphasis will be placed on management decision-making techniques. Topics include job and process costing, Activity-Based Costing (ABC), just-in-time inventory techniques, variance analysis and budgeting.

Financial Accounting Intensive

The first half of the unit examines the development of financial statements including the underlying concepts and measurement theories. It emphasises the analysis and use of these statements to make decisions. The second half emphasises issues in financial reporting, valuation and income measurement. It includes inventories, plant and equipment, bonds, present value and stockholders’ equity.

Managerial Accounting and Statistics

By understanding how to interpret the information contained in financial statements and other accounting records, managers can make better informed decisions around cost and revenue related issues. In the first half of the unit, students learn how to perform a cost benefit analysis, how to analyse cost-volume relationships, and how to apply ratio analysis to financial statements such as the statement of cash flows. The second half of this unit introduces the collection and organisation of data, including the measurement, presentation and uses of elementary set theory; measures of central tendency and variability; basic probability; and probability distributions.

Financial Reporting and Analysis Intensive

The legal, economic and global environments have a major influence on the financial reporting process. The first half of this unit examines the underlying concepts and measurement theories relating to financial reporting with emphasis on the measurement, valuation and disclosure of assets. It also considers alternative reporting practices, revenue recognition and the measurement of income. The second half of this unit continues the study of accounting concepts and procedures including detailed examination of inventories, tangible and intangible assets and depreciation.

Introduction to Securities & Investment

(International)

This unit is intended for new entrants and staff who are beginning their career in the financial services industry.

The broad topics covered make the qualification suitable for all staff, not just those responsible for making investment decisions, including those in administration, finance and accounting, IT, customer service, sales and marketing and HR and training.
