Year 4 Topic Lessons – 1st – 5th March 2021

History - Monday 1st March If you need further explanation, join your teacher for the topic explanation at 10am! Who was Alfred the Great?

Today we will be focussing on Alfred the Great (849-899) who was the most famous of the Anglo-Saxon kings. Despite overwhelming odds, he successfully defended his kingdom, Wessex, against the Vikings. He also introduced wide-ranging reforms including defence measures, reform of the law and of coinage.

He was a keen champion of education and translated important texts from Latin into English.

Known as a just and fair ruler, Alfred is the only English King to have earned the title ‘the Great’.

Alfred was born in Berkshire in 849. His father was Aethelwulf, King of

Wessex. Alfred was the youngest of five sons so it appeared unlikely that

he would ever become king. However, all of Alfred’s brothers died so in

871, he became King of Wessex. Alfred became king in the middle of nine

huge battles with the Vikings. At the Battle of Ashdown in 871, Alfred

defeated Viking forces.

Classification keys are a way of identifying living things through a series of questions. For example, does it have wings. Each question has a yes or no answer and leads you one step closer to the name of the living thing. The first question is always quite general because it needs to help sort the living things you are classifying. The questions will gradually get more specific as they separate living things that are more similar. Read the examples below of a classification key before having a go at the main activity.

13 Art – Thursday 4th March

Anglo-Saxon Coins Today you will be exploring Anglo-Saxon coins.

The Anglo-Saxons used different currency to pay for things. The Anglo-Saxons made their own coins – they made different designs that were pressed onto the face of a coin, so archaeologists who find those coins today know when they were used. The coins changed depending on the region where they were made, who was king, or even what important event had just happened. Below are some Anglo-Saxon coins that include these patterns. Use the boxes next to each picture to carefully sketch one of the coins. Look at the patterns carefully and use a pencil to recreate them. Remember to use light sketching lines to help you.
