Introduction

Thanks to our leadership in Spectrum management, Prospective planning, Network

deployment, ATDI was/is involved in several M2M projects like: Smart Energy Grids, Security sensors, Smart Fleet management, AMR 169 MHz, Emergency… and collaborates with regulation authorities about frequency sharing, constraints and billing.

Due to the complexity and the heterogeneity of M2M applications, ATDI has committed a team of experts to support you for all the phases of the project (Guidelines, vendor references, planning, IT integration, system interconnectivity, frequency resources, web services, tests, embedded Sim and module analysis, product purpose, roaming…). Our expertise covers the following applications:

Regulation 1/2

Regulators worldwide are now starting to consider machine-to-machine (M2M) services as part of their agendas.

Machine to machine (M2M) applications may be a significant driver of even further growth in demand over mobile access networks, and therefore demand for spectrum. These applications can be potentially delivered over mobile broadband networks, Wi-Fi or dedicated networks. In all cases, spectrum sharing may be a highly relevant policy tool to support the development of future M2M applications.

Sharing spectrum on a geographical basis could be used to increase the overall supply of mobile broadband, license exempt and M2M spectrum

ATDI provides expertise to help you to develop clear and comprehensive regulatory frameworks that include spectrum awards, clear rules on roaming, and the allocation of adequate numbering resources.

Highlights

What are regulators doing in respect to M2M services?

Which areas of regulation related to M2M have not yet been adequately addressed? How does regulation impact M2M business models?

License exempt vs licensed approach?

Regulation 2/2

Scope

. Comparisons between the countries (allocated bands by services, spectrum sharing, fees) . M2M preferred frequency bands

. The connectivity required by M2M services may need access to more license exempt and licensed spectrum which could be made available by spectrum sharing

. Meeting the demand for spectrum by M2M services include delivery over mobile networks using licensed spectrum and the use of spectrum on a license exempt basis

. Ensure the future capacity and performance of mobile networks. These include using additional spectrum, the use of more efficient mobile technologies, reducing cell sizes by adding more mobile sites and offloading mobile traffic onto fixed networks using WiFi

. Femtocells

. Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) . White-spaces

. Mitigation technics

. Geo-localization database (spectrum usage)

Scope of services

Sensors:

Environmental sensors: thermal, hygrometric, anemometric, sound, gas, particles, light, other EM spectrum, seismic… Activity sensors: pavement/roadway, vehicle & pedestrian detection, parking space occupancy…

Access:

Multi-networks SIM cards

Standard machine to machine bundles (SMS, data, voice)

M2M wireless broadband devices connect to 3G and 4G networks to enable remote equipment monitoring and management in real time from any computer at any location.

Management:

(9)

Scope of services

M2M data management from data centric to thing/space centric: sensors as database, sensors as context sources, with multistage fusion aggregation, assorted sensor metadata models, physical things as primary entities. ATDI will provide to IDA a 3D High Resolution terrain model (Relief+Buildings+Ground occupancy) for accurate calculations and localization of sensors and hubs. The database is built in ICS online (ATDI Cloud application).

Common intermediate-level services on top of shared sensors & network infrastructure Relevant entities for data consolidation:

Devices/things & mobile entities: physical network, node/vertex, electrical substation, garbage container, lamp posts, bus shelters, signaling, street signs…

Relevant sub-spaces within metropolitan area:

(10)

Scope of services

M2M communication scenarios: manage converged and multi-mode devices on any network, including devices that do not have a SIM card, as well as resource constrained devices.

Software Management: allowing the installation and the removal of applications on the mobile, the retrieval of the inventory of software components already installed on the device

Diagnostics and Monitoring: which enables remote diagnostic, for example to query the device for memory and battery status or to collect radio measures and QoS parameters, and remote monitoring, by defining trap and reports

Connectivity: allows the configuration of bearers and proxies

Device Capabilities: allows a Management Authority to remotely enable and disable device peripherals like cameras, Bluetooth, USB, etc Lock and Wipe: allows to remotely lock and/or wipe the device, for instance when the device is stolen or sold, or when personal or enterprise data are compromised

Browser: allows remote management of browser favorites and settings

Virtualization: enables remote management of virtual machines running on the device

Management Policy: allows the deployment on the device of policies which the Device Management Client can execute and enforce independently: if some events happen, then perform some operations

White-Space databases (1/2)

New router generations need to consult online database(s) in order to receive details on

frequencies and power levels they can use on a given location (GPS coordinates,

address, localization) to avoid interference with existing licensed spectrum users.

Two types of databases can be set-up:

1) Based on area: an area is identified by a geocoded polygon and contains (required

MR database):

. List of permitted frequencies

. and for each frequency:

. Powers max (UL/DL)

. Activity

1) Based on coordinates: an X,Y point contains (required HR database):

. List of permitted frequencies

. and for each frequency:

. Powers max (UL/DL)

. Activity

(12)

White-Space databases (2/2)

The database is filled using Cognitive radio spectrum sensing

method (activity) and coverage simulation of the existing services in the shared bands (or to be shared), correlated with a demographic database (fixed and mobile users). The database is updated every time a new router is identified and/or allowed.

International coordination constraints are taken into account.

ATDI offers:

. Structure of the online database . Built-up of the database and hosting . Web services

. Router interface (message format, processes…):

the router consults the database, in return, it receives frequency list and power levels it can use. The database is then updated.

. Sensor interface

. Identify gaps (white-spaces) . Define constraints

. Define updating mechanisms (sensor interface, new simulation procedures…)
