Thank you to all of the survey participants, we had over 180 responses or approximately 2/3 of our parent body. The board and I will be reviewing responses in the coming months as we develop plans for the coming school year. Each year we conduct this survey there are themes that come through the responses. The themes this year included:

• Food Service

• Supporting Diversity • Parent Involvement • Vaccinations

• Academic Programs

• Scholastic Achievement & High School Prep • Facilities

In the coming Leaflets, I will be offering updates on these themes, many of which represent active projects and conversations that the board, faculty and administration have been working on during the current school year. I will also begin hosting our Monday morning talks starting April 4th that will touch upon these themes. Our board meetings, held the second Thursday evening of the month, are also a space to hear updates on these projects. Fi-nally, please don’t hesitate to contact me if you would like to talk further about these, and other issues that are of importance to you and the school.

As always, your feedback is vital to our school continuing its path of excellence and innovation. We can only be successful in this endeavor when our community shares its knowledge and experience to inform our develop-ment. Our community’s collective wisdom is Live Oak’s greatest resource. Thank you for sharing your observa-tions, quesobserva-tions, and suggestions.

You can visit www.liveoakfoundation. org to make your donation online, or you can drop an envelope in the office or in front of the kindergar-tens, first and second grades. Thanks for making Live Oak’s curriculum possible!

by Jeanette Isenberg, Strings Teacher

“Students must know the D major, D minor, G major, C major, A minor and F major scales; be able to play legato, staccato, slurred, hooked, tremolo and pizzicato articulations; and most importantly, come to class ready to listen, work and create.” These were some of the requirements sent to the Live Oak 8th grade string ensemble by composer Katrina Wreede prior to our first meeting with her on January 25, 2016.

On that Monday, in the crowded music room, eyes and ears were on Ms. Wreede from Composing Together while she began a dia-logue about the planets and the vast galaxy in which they reside. The students, who already have a good working knowledge of astronomy, were participating a bit shyly at first while making up their minds about this new task they were to perform. By the end of first intensive session eyes were sparkling, ears were

totally open, brains were revved up and a great competition was occurring to submit ideas for the composition that was taking shape. What might the mysterious Planet 9 sound like as it orbits? What would zooming asteroids sound like and who should play that sound? How many times and when? What are some ways to make non-tra-ditional sounds on the instruments?

Ms. Wreede contacted me at the end of last school year and let me know that her brainchild, “Composing Togeth-er,” had some extra funding left over and wanted to know if I’d like to have her come to the school to do a project. I agreed enthusiastically! Based in the East Bay, the mission of Composing Together is to “Bring professional com-posers and musicians directly into classrooms to collaborate with young people to create new music, empowering them with the knowledge that their ideas have meaning and value.” The organization has travelled to schools all over the United States, bringing students the process of creative communication and collaboration. Often, as it will at Live Oak Charter, the series ends with a concert showcasing a composition created and played by the students. With the combination of a Rotary Club grant, funding from Composing Together, and an anonymous donor we are currently engaged in writing a piece of music.

Live Oak students have settled on a hybrid program of working with Rondo form (Teddy Bear Picnic) and de-scribing what we currently know about our solar system (Sounds to Space). After two intensive sessions and one regular class period the composing process is over. The ink is drying on the composition and I’m not sure if there is a final title yet. There may be some multi-media collaboration which happens at the concert on March 23 in Herzog Hall. We now must buckle down and learn to play in ensemble what the 8th grade students wrote! The collaborative creative process (think about working on projects with a committee) requires a certain level of subject knowledge, and more importantly requires mature social interaction. While bursting with our own ideas, we have to have the disciple to listen super carefully to the ideas of others and become willing to acknowledge and incorporate everyone’s input. We also have to be willing to see our own ideas left unused. The feedback from Ms. Wreede about our students was that they were able musicians and contributed some ideas which were advanced and exciting. She enjoyed a lively time with them and looks forward to the concert. Ms. Wreede will be back for our final dress rehearsal and concert. Meanwhile, you can look up Composing Together online and see some short videos of other school’s efforts and read about this innovative and encouraging organization.
